I’m going full-on fanboy in anticipation of the new Animal Collective album and these two 90 second clips are doing nothing to halt my expectation. Someone I know whose heard it hasn’t helped. Panda Bear’s stamp is all over it as expected. If the first two links are down (and they probably will... read more »

Sondre Lerche – “Bluish” (Animal Collective cover)

Sondre Lerche’s Two Way Monologue (2004) used to be  one of my favorite albums, but I have to admit that I haven’t connected with his several releases since then nearly as much. I respect him a lot for experimenting, and trying out different sounds from jazz to indie rock, but none of it has really done much for me. He just sent out an acoustic cover he made of Animal Collective’s ”Bluish” off their highly acclaimed album, Merriweather Post Pavillion. It brought to mind Lerche’s older work (meaning it’s really good!), and I thought I’d share. Best of '09: Top 50 Albums (#1 - 10)

In recent years the crowd that is claiming "the album is dead" has grown louder and louder. We couldn't disagree more. As more and more people turn to iTunes and the Hype Machine to download the latest and greatest singles, we have stuck to the traditional album listening and found that there are still some truly great records being made these days. For most of this year we have been inundated by bands breaking into the world, mainstream artists trying to recapture their former glory, and indie rock "superstars" growing into their own, it has been exciting and fun and we love listening to all these great talents have to offer us. Some might say it was a weak year for music, they're really, really wrong on that one! These are our 50 favorite albums of 2009, it's a list that was pared down from over 300 entries, and which we have slaved and thought over for a good part of the last two months, tweaking things here and there, putting in new albums, taking out other records. There are other great albums that failed to make this list, but should be listened to and adored as well, we only wish we had more time and energy to make this list longer and longer. But that would also cheapen what the Top 50 were able to accomplish. Obviously we encourage everyone to chime in in the comments section, please tell us what we get wrong, what we leave out, what we rank too high, we seriously love those conversations more than you will ever know! Enjoy the list everyone!!!Download the ZIP!Top Albums #11 - 20Top Albums #21 - 30Top Albums #31 - 40Top Albums #41 - 5010. Grizzly Bear Veckatimest; One of the great moments of 2009 was the crazed scene at the final Pool Party of the year, with hipsters and music fans packing the place to capacity to see Grizzly Bear perform the fantastic new songs so many people have gone ape shit for all year. Of course those hipsters and music fans got to mingle with the likes of Jay-Z and Beyonce who lauded the rise of indie music telling rappers that they should be taking notes from what these bands are doing right now. For HOV to be a supporter of your music speaks volumes to the effect your sound has on people, and Veckatimest really fulfilled all the promise Grizzly Bear had shown on their first few albums. The record is a pristine collection of pop songs, with amazing multi-part harmonies and melodies you could hum without even realizing you're doing so. It may sound like a simple formula, one that has been used for years, but Grizzly Bear expanded upon it, building layers into their songs that could be revealed listen after listen as something new and exciting. This is the indie pop of the future and we're glad to see that the future is now!Grizzly Bear - "Southern Point"Grizzly Bear - "About Face"9. Fever Ray Fever Ray; We don't really know what the point of doing a solo project is when you're just going to make the solo project sound so eerily similar to your full time, two piece band. We still haven't gotten close to an answer to that question, but after listening to the solo debut from The Knife's Karin Dreijer, the amazing Fever Ray, we're pretty sure we don't really need an answer to it. The dark, hypnotic sounds on this debut record fit neatly with what she does for The Knife, make sonic soundscapes that haunt your dreams after you've listened. This album is eerie in every moment, it is darkness in musical form, it is scarier than anything any of the darker genres of sound have ever given us, and yet we can't stop listening once we get going. Karin's voice works perfectly with the hypnotic sounds of the record making a vast and vivid scenery that you can truly picture every inch of as you listen. Amazing record, but we would expect nothing less from a member of The Knife.Fever Ray - "If I Had A Heart"Fever Ray - "Seven"8. The Very Best Warm Heart of Africa; Once again we have to praise the internet gods for breaking down the barriers of space and allowing us to travel to distant lands and experience the cultures and sounds of music from far and wide. Without the help of the internet the music of The Very Best probably wouldn't come anywhere near our ears, but thanks to it we can hear the abilities of a young African MC making music with some dynamic samples and beats, some fantastic collaborations with singers like Ezra Koenig and M.I.A., and just an excitement and elation that is rarely heard in popular music. With members hailing from France, Sweden, and Malawi, the album probably would never have existed without the abilities of the internet, making it a truly global band and sound that really has no boundaries itself. These guys mix and use bits of everything and the result is a record that is genuine, fun, and beautiful in so many different ways. Thanks internet, you've really done some great things. The Very Best (Ezra Koenig) - "Warm Heart of Africa"The Very Best - "Yalira"7. Future of the Left Travels with Myself and Another; Arising from the ashes of a beloved band is a difficult thing to do. You are burdened with the expectations of your previous project and expected to stay within the boundaries of that sound. Out of the wreckage of Mclusky came Future of the Left, a band that continues the anger fueled heavy rock of their past project, spewing vile from every aggressive note they let out. This music is angry, powerful, and all consuming at once. It hits you like a ton of bricks and expects you to hit it back with the same sort of energy and passion they just hit you with. When you put on Travels with Myself and Another every bit of emotion bubbles up in you, forcing you to clench fists and sing along with the same anger Falco wails with. When the record ends you're kind of pissed that the band didn't give you more to rail along with. It's just that kind of record that plays on your own personal emotions and amplifies them under the fire of their defined purposes. Man I love rock that gets under your skin like this does.Future of the Left - "Arming Eritrea"Future of the Left - "I Am Civil Service"6. Dirty Projectors Bitte Orca; There honestly is no use in fighting the swell of support and love that has revolved around the Dirty Projectors' amazing Bitte Orca since well before the record was actually released. There is no way you can hate this record, no matter how much you want to revolt against its popularity. The pop songs found within are far too perfect, far too happy, far to melodic to rail against. The use of the female voice, harmonies, of Dave Longstreth's own odd voice, all work in perfect unison throughout this harmonious record to create some of the most addictive pop songs of the last decade. Try as you want to revolt it will slowly envelope you and warm you up to it.We know, we resisted the pull of the album for a little while but realized it was futile and wrong.Dirty Projectors - "Temecula Sunrise"Dirty Projectors - "Stillness Is the Move"5. Phoenix Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix; The opening three song arc of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is absolutely flawless. "Lisztomania", "1901", and "Fences" are absolutely perfect pop songs, they are immediately catchy, demand your participation whether it be clapping in time or singing along, and have an impossible to match appeal. It may make the rest of this fantastic record pale in comparison, but to match these songs up with any out there would be an exercise in futility. But the songs that follow "Fences" aren't bad tunes, not at all, not even a little bit, they are almost on par with the first three, but they have to be compared and follow on of the best opening arcs in the history of pop music. It is of course up for debate by we find it hard to think of three songs to start a record that capture you as quickly as these ones do, if it makes the rest of the album sound a little weaker so be it, but know that you are sorely undervaluing the music of a band on the verge of superstardom that no indie act has yet to attain. We're taking Coldplay levels of insane fans. Believe us, it's coming and when it happens you can blame the first three songs on this record.Phoenix - "Fences"Phoenix - "Girlfriend"4. Animal Collective Merriweather Post Pavilion; If you've been reading this list all week long you probably asked yourself at some point where Animal Collective was going to end up. It wasn't so much a question of if, there was no doubt it was gonna be on here, but even we debated ourselves in where to place the record that has probably been the most widely hailed of the year. We're dropping it in at number four because honestly there were three records we liked more, but really if this would have wound up topping the list we wouldn't have been surprised. The record is near flawless, it merged the pop sensibilities found on Strawberry Jam with the odd sounds of Feels and everything before so perfectly that we were pretty speechless when we first heard the record. Animal Collective have found way to be artistically relevant and commercially successful by marrying pop and art in a way that hasn't been done in ages. And they did all this while remaining true to themselves and while becoming arguably the most important, innovative, and influential band of the last ten years. We have a feeling a lot of folks are going to try and copy and derive from this for a long, long time.Animal Collective - "In the Flowers"Animal Collective - "Bluish"3. Jay-Z The Blueprint 3; So perusing the list that Pitchfork posted up last week we were left with the thought that there was just one glaring omission (and that The Antlers should have been much higher!) the absence of Jay-Z from their list must have been a mistake just like the absence of Mos Def from mine was totally an absent minded mistake. But lo and behold it seems that the hipster litmus test chose to knock HOV for making one of his best, most accessible, most hit making albums of his career. Why no love? Turns out this record wasn't critically acclaimed, lucky for Jay-Z it sold like crazy so someone must of liked it and I guess that person would have to be me if it isn't you. With three of my top 20 singles of '09 how could this not have a high place on my own list? It's loaded with great beats, sick lyrics, and amazing guest spots. I guess that's really the joy of making my own list isn't it? It's my perogative and my choice of where everything goes. Don't agree? Oh well.Jay-Z - "D.OA. (Death of Auto-Tune)"Jay-Z (feat. Alicia Keys) - "Empire State Of Mind"2. Girls Album; Every year there is one album that comes from nowhere to capture our ears and hearts. Without a doubt this year that album is Album by Girls. The record has been a constant since being released in late September, racking up as many plays as just about anything else released this year on our iPod. And why wouldn't it be? With catchy as anything melodies and sincere, often melancholy lyrics there is a lot on this record to fall in love with. But as desperate as the lyrics can be there always seems to be an air of hope, that things will get better so long as we keep working on them. That theme fits perfectly with the whole feeling of 2009, it has been a rough year for many, many people but we're all hoping and working towards a better 2010. With this music playing in our ears there really is nothing we can't hope to accomplish, no matter where we come from or how down we get there is still the chance to pull ourselves up by the collar and brush ourselves off. The hope and joy of this sometimes sad record has helped brighten many a dark day these past few months and for that we are grateful.Girls - "Hellhole Ratrace"Girls - "Lauren Marie"1. The Antlers Hospice; Last September Peter Silberman, lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist for The Antlers, handed me a copy of Hospice the record he had spent nearly two years working on and since that day there has been very few days that have gone by without me listening to at least part of the record. Right from the very first listen, that shuddering wave of sound that opens the record frightened me and captured my attention. From there we are lead on a trip through one of the more harrowing ordeals any person should ever have to go through. In this case it happens to be a case of art imitating life, as Silberman built the majority of Hospice out of personal experiences and the emotions the came from it. It shows throughout the entire album, resonating with a passion few artists could ever hope to match. Every note that is played here, every lyric sung, all come to build a vivid portrait of a man not quite knowing what direction to take and being met with resistance after each choice. The songs on Hospice have so much depth and passion to them that there was never any doubt that this was the record that hit me hardest out of anything made this year. There's times when I'll tear up listening to the heartbreaking songs here, specifically the two singles "Two" and "Bear", and emotional release that few records, songs, or artists have ever been able to draw from me. Over the past few years I have become friends with Peter and the rest of The Antlers and I'm sure this friendship led the record to be held in even loftier heights than it would have been otherwise, but there really is no arguing the beauty and emotional impact that is found on Hospice. It's an amazing record that would have topped my list last year if any labels were willing to take a chance based solely on the talent and music, instead it got pushed to this year in a self-release and then a re-release on Frenchkiss, meaning it took about 14-months to get to this point. But really, if you follow the site this should come as no surprise, it was pretty much pre-ordained from January 1st to now.The Antlers - "Kettering"The Antlers - "Two"<script type="text/javascript"> sr_adspace_id = 4549407; sr_adspace_width = 728; sr_adspace_height = 90; sr_adspace_type = "graphic"; sr_ad_new_window = true; </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ad.afy11.net/srad.js?azId=4549407"> </script>

Best Albums of 2009: #10 to #01

by Mike Mineo ——————————————————————————————————————————————- 10. Super Furry Animals – Dark Days/Light Years Try and think of a band that has released 10 albums over the past 13 years, all of them attaining acclaim and stylistic diversity in a uniquely identifiable manner. Maybe if Super Furry Animals existed a few decades ago a few contemporaries could have shared this [...]

Here are my top 40 albums of 2009 collected into one post rather than spread across three.  For what it’s worth I already have a bad case of list regret.  In retrospect I would have placed the Real Estate album much higher, possibly top 10 even.  I’ve been listening to it a lot lately and it really is gorgeous.  Anyways, what’s done is done.  Enjoy. SDM’s Top 40 Albums of 2009: 10 – 01

Well here are my top ten albums of the year. If you know me at all you will probably find my top five pretty predictable, but I’m fine with that. In retrospect I would say 2009 was a great year for music. Now it’s time to look ahead to 2010 and hope that it’s just as good, maybe even better. View Entries 10 – 1 after the jump… 10. Maddening March Musical Madness Part 4 - Animal Collective Wins!!

Was it any surprise that Animal Collective (North Carolina) is the winner?  No not really.  They showed by their thorough trouncing of Vampire Weekend (Michigan State) that they are truly in a class by themselves.  Congrats to all the AC and UNC fans out there.  You deserve it.  I on the other hand will take a look at my bracket and try to figure out where it all went wrong (possibly choosing Cut Copy/Pitt to go all the way).  Until next year… mp3: Animal Collective - My Girls mp3: Animal Collective - Daily Routine mp3: Animal Collective - Bluish Take a look at the previous parts: MMMM Part 1 MMMM Part 2 MMMM Part 3

Blue Sky, Bluish

As I like to do when I walk my dog alone, I use music for a personal soundtrack to the suburban surroundings around me. I can safely assume that everyone reading these words is familiar with the inherent obsessiveness of music bloggers, be it words, sharing, music, or all three. Another unenterprising hypothesis would be that you probably read other music blogs. And yet another would be a preemptive guess of what you'd predict I was listening to if you thought Animal Collective's new album, Merriweather Post Pavilion. Animal Collective - "Bluish" Though I've listened to MPP almost exclusively these last two weeks, I paused on this track today during the aforementioned stroll. Colorado is enjoying a beautiful day today. A sun drenched, blue sky betrays the crispness of the winter air and its lingering bite. January continues holding court according to the calendar and as sure as the sun will soon retreat for the day, taking the mercury readings down with it, summer is still months away. The peaceful, gentle vibe of this song elevated my quiet neighborhood from a scene of Anytown, USA to a bucolic paradise of doting lovers chasing after each other. A love song my any other name, and just one of the many not immediately obvious standouts from the record. So far MPP is the de rigueur album, as it were, of this young year. Things happen for a reason however, and if you haven't yet dove in, there's no time like the present to get involved with this ever-evolving band and the fantastic artistry their compositions provide. They don't skimp on the lyrics either, so bonus if you can make them out. (Previous post links to a full album review from fellow M.S. writer Jeff Klingman for Brooklyn's L Magazine - check it.)

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion Review

Animal Collective (AC) albums are impossible to review. Not to bang the ultimate cop-out drum, but it’s true. If you’ve heard their music, you have an opinion and (really) you don’t care what I’m about to say. Those of you that love ‘em will continue to love ‘em. Those of you that hate ‘em will continue to hate ‘em. Animal Collective creates polarizing music and the only reason you’re reading my review is to get confirmation on your opinion… that just sucks. Anyway, now that’s off my chest, I’ll say that the real problem when reviewing AC is that they play experimental rock and like most experimental music, there is little middle ground for casual bystanders to stand on. Animal Collective does not make music you’ll hear many DJ’s spin at a house party. You won’t hear it come across the radio on the way to a bar. You won’t hear it at a Miami club. No, Animal Collective writes music lovers… it’s music designed to be listened to, not just heard. Most experimental rock musicians create music that should be treated like a relationship. You’ve gotta spend time with it. You need to put on the headphones, pay attention to what the music is saying, and how it’s saying it. Animal Collective’s music is complex, interesting, and meticulously put together. You have to treat it with respect. Like a relationship, you’re going to either love & cherish it, or hate it & want to end it as soon as possible. Like other AC albums, Merriweather Post Pavilion (MPP) is experimental, pushing the general bounds that mainstream music sets. The strength of this album is certainly in the subtle details; details that sometimes take minutes to reach. This is not an album that you can pick up, listen to the opening hook, and know if you’ll like. Merriweather Post Pavilion is less listener friendly than Feels. Its beats are used more judiciously than in Strawberry Jam. Still, like the AC you’re used to, songs on MPP develop slowly and are built on repetition. For the casual observer, this can become tedious, but fans of previous A.C. work will not only welcome it, but they will also find MPP more mature and stronger than in previous offerings. “My Girls,” is a beautiful song that gains power as layers drip onto it. It’s my favorite on the album, especially as the beat enters to drive the song along. AC show a deep understanding of music as the lyric’s tempo, drags, jumps, and ultimately transform to harmonic tones. “Bluish,” probably the song with most mass appeal, is subtle and full of interesting sounds to pick apart. It’s smooth, it’s upbeat, and it’s great. Additionally, “Brothersport” is full of the singular moments that make up the greatness of this album. The music itself morphs throughout the piece, creating a journey through a landscape of tones, emotions, and vocal depth. There are moments where MPP falters, although not frequent. In an album that seems to celebrate consistency, “Daily Routine’s” organ breaks get old… we could certainly use less of those. As with other albums, A.C. will at times sacrifice listenability with experimental sounds or long outro’s/intro’s… almost like they’re daring the listener to turn it off. This can be off putting. Thankfully, the album on whole is strong enough to forgive a couple minor annoyances. If you’re a fan of Animal Collective, you’ll love it. If you’re not, sorry… you’re missing out. If you’ve yet to form an opinion, form it in full context. Remember, Animal Collective is polarizing… you aren’t going to like it: you’re going to love it, or hate it. The best advice I can give on this album (or almost any Animal Collective album) is to buy a song or two and listen to them in their entirety. The biggest travesty you can pull is to form your opinion off of the 30 second iTunes sound-bites. You’ll walk away unsatisfied and unimpressed. Take the time to really listen and understand what direction Animal Collective is trying to go. If you do, I think you’ll find a band you can really get behind: A band that makes music for music lovers. Merriweather Post Pavilion - tentative excerpts

I’m going full-on fanboy in anticipation of the new Animal Collective album and these two 90 second clips are doing nothing to halt my expectation. Someone I know whose heard it hasn’t helped. Panda Bear’s stamp is all over it as expected. If the first two links are down (and they probably will be), go to the alternative link. Bluish [Alt link] Also Frightened [Alt link] One song I’m really looking forward to hearing recorded is ‘Brother Sport’. Listen to it live. It’s already amazing.
