Gonna see Girls today! Before they jet to Tokyo. Fun Fact: Christopher Owens, the lead singer, was born into the Children Of God cult. Funny thing, because right now I’m watching the Six Feet Under that has the COG burial. Haven’t given their release, Album, a once-over? You’re overdue.

The words “breath” and “bated” spring to mind as I continue to post my best of lists. As I said the other day, my record buying habits are such that whether an album is new or not rarely enters into my thinking. In fact I’m very often unaware of a release date until I get round to preparing these sort of lists. Some of the records I’ve been most excited about in 2009 are already a few years old. I’m a little slow.So this first list runs down some of the nearly new records I’ve really enjoyed this year:Seven Nearly New Classics of 2009Coles Corner – Richard HawleyLove, Ire & Song – Frank TurnerFor Emma, Forever Ago – Bon IverThis Nation’s Saving Grace – The FallSnow Tyres – UnbunnyLost Wisdom - Mount Eerie , Julie Doiron , Fred SquireThe Wailing Souls at Channel One – Wailing SoulsSome of these I’m embarrassed to have only just cottoned onto, some I feel that I’m arriving at fashionably late after all the fuss has died down. They’re all great records that have enriched my life this year.Seven Records You Should Probably Buy(Even though I haven’t…)The Hazards of Love – The Decemberists (actually, I have just bought this, not much liking it so far…) Real Estate – Real Estate (ditto) Merriweather Post Pavilion – Animal Collective (I just know this is going to be too difficult for me, and it’ll end up being flung across the room) Tarot Sport – Fuck Buttons Psychic Spasms – Neon Indian Fever Ray – Fever Ray (highly recommended by Mr Cole) Bitte Orca – The Dirty Projectors (even more highly recommended by the aforementioned Blogger) And finally...The Seven Best Records of 2009But, anyway, what can you do? You can’t get them all can you?Actually, once I got round to checking out which records were new and which weren't, I was pleasantly surprised to see how much quality music has been released this year. Honourable mentions go to the Volcano Choir, the Antlers, Califone, Vic Chesnutt, You Can Be a Wesley, Euros Childs, the Leisure Society, the Phantom Band, Art Brut, the Lemonheads and Sin Fang Bous, who all produced good records that I’ve enjoyed listening to, but sorry fellers, no cigar…So here we go, no particular order, I love them allVeckatimest – Grizzly BearTwo lovely performances - at Green Man and in Bristol – certainly enhanced this record for me, but even without that, how can you fail to be entranced by those harmonies and complex arrangements?DoryThe Liberty of Norton Folgate – MadnessI’ve always been keen on Madness and their ability to write a decent pop song, and it’s particularly gratifying to see older gentlemen writing mature songs.Idiot ChildAlbum– Girls“Weedy”, “adenoidal” and “morbid” are all phrases that flash through the mind when you hear this. Their performance at the Cooler confirmed everything, (rather reassuringly so in fact) and added “Hunky Dory” to the list…Lust for LifeThe xx – The xxThe xx are another band who crept under my creaking radar system this year and another band who produced an eponymous classic for me. Right now I can’t get it off the iPhone…Heart Skipped a BeatThe Crying Light – Antony and the JohnsonsAnother record that benefited dramatically from my seeing it performed. It’s that voice again, obviously, but also his ability to write aching, moving songs that makes him continue to stand out.Her Eyes Are Underneath the Ground Hometowns – the Rural Alberta AdvantageGreat songs and a punchy restless approach made this record a cut above all the other Americana-style releases of the year. Basically, a jumpy, beaty record pushed on by the busiest drummer of the year.Don’t Haunt This PlaceSurvival – Forest FiresAnother American record, sounding a lot like the Let It Bleed era Stones and embellished by yukes and other old tyme instruments. Some ugly awkward lyrics as well. Fascinating stuff.Echoes ComingIn the Court of the Wrestling Let’s – Let’s WrestleAnd speaking of ugly awkward stuff, my last record makes a virtue of a Seeds-ish lack of virtuosity. An eager, wholehearted record that owes something to Art Brut and which actually pushes Eddie Argos off my list. It’s a funny old world, eh?I Won’t Lie to YouEight you say? Ah c’mon, who’s counting?Happy New Year.

Grooms - "Dreamsucker"
The songs on Grooms’ mighty, mostly underrated Rejoicer are perpetually ready to take a detour into sinister surreality (marine craft that resemble bloody lips, for example). Its lead track invests banal statements with the weight of a divine sledge hammer, though. “I’ve seen her. She exists. I’ve seen her…do…it,” spits Travis Johnson, sounding like both an accuser and a confessor. Which is not to mention an even more basic round of “do do do do do do do,” delivered like machine-gun fire. Presumably, not since sing-a-longs during the last, private days of the Phil Spector mansion has a building block of basic pop carried such deranged weight.
Jeff Klingman
Sparklehorse & Danger Mouse with Jason Lytle - "Jaykub"
"Jaykub"'s nursery rhyme, velvety smooth featured vocals flow from the lips of former Granddaddy vocalist, Jason Lytle. His classic tone kicks off as a sympathetic wake up for what we'll later find out to be a terribly sad protagonist. As pleasant as it starts it quickly becomes apparent that the simpleton subject suffers from slumbering grandeur, though not in the typically delusional framework. Enriched with cleverly placed Danger Mouse's cues: cheering, door knocks; likewise for the expressive guitar playing by Sparkehorse's Mark Linkous, everything envelops in a haunting way. Like a twisted advent calendar, surprises lurk with reveals that each successive listen brings. Though nothing feels as jarring as the elegantly pointed last line of the song.
Merry Swankster
YACHT - "Psychic City (Voodoo City)"
YACHT's bright and bouncy summer pop jam is much different than the tiny, tiny version Rich Jensen committed to four-track in 1987 and released on K Records, despite being a fairly faithful rendition of said. But, it's kind of sweetly fitting that a song celebrating the magic of everyday items, everyday interactions, might animate a home-recorded relic in such a technicolor manner. In a world where even kitchen appliances are ready to burst into song, a dusty old cassette single is surely not to underestimated.
Jeff Klingman
Jay-Z with Alicia Keys - "Empire State of Mind"
As far as I was concerned, this track had everything working against it: The world needs another song about New York City like I need another fucking Yankees World Series title. But then you consider a few more universal truths surrounding this record, that if it were released on 09/12/2001, right not we’d be reading about it being the hands-down song of the decade, and if Alicia did nothing else in her life besides belt out the hook on this track, she’d still be able to hold her head up with any other twenty-something R&B singer from her era.
Randall Monty
tUnE-YaRds - "Hatari"
Merrill Garbus is the one woman, ukulele crushing force behind tUnE-YaRds. She orchestrates loops, rhythms, beats and vocals one step at a time to create an escalating musical collage resulting in shockingly neat and fully fleshed out musical puzzles. "Hatari" is the best from the very strong 4AD debut, BiRd-BrAiNs. Swirling rhythms propel and reverse seemingly at once, sounding like they're stuck in a stop-motion film driving a backfiring 1950's era car on a breezy Cuban esplanade. Disparate singing styles range from The Lion King African inspired, 60s girl group call and response, rapid Hip-Hop delivery and an antimelodious chant matrix involving drunken hollering and madwoman rantings. All of this basted by disintegrating lo-fi production.
Merry Swankster
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Zero"
The mechanistic pulse that heralds “Zero,” the opening track of It’s Blitz, signals immediately that this is not your grandfather’s Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I have no problem with that. Unlike many purists out there, I have a long and deeply uncool track record of preferring the later, less edgy, more refined recordings of bands that start off sounding notes of sonic mayhem. Not that there’s no edge left—Karen O couldn’t sing an entire song without letting us feel the tigress that lies within, which is surely true of “Zero,” but her vocal oscillates between that familiar half-spoken wail and a newfound gentler croon, all buoyed by the song’s seductive, synthetic pulse. The spaciousness in Dave Sitek’s production is magnificently room-filling, and the resulting song (and album) is triumphant, kinetic and, surprisingly, joyous.
Dave Klein
Atlas Sound - "Walkabout"
“Walkabout” joins Fever Ray’s “When I grow up” as 2009’s top 50 songs diagnosed with a tinge of Peter Pan Syndrome. Emerging out of underwater dreamscapes, the song flicks the channel and lands on a blissful cabin fever singalong reminiscent of your favorite childhood cartoon. The driving sample is provided by the organ charmings from “What Am I Going to Do” by the 60’s garage band The Dovers. The Dovers do provide the hook and ladder in “Walkabout”, but Bradford Cox and Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox build a tree house with their tools. The song is full of bounce and playfulness, but as it submerges in and out of short whims of inquisitive space, it seems clear that Cox and Lennox are looking back at childhood like the astronaut that looks back at the earth while on the way to the moon.
Yonah Korngold
Girls - "Lust For Life"
The title’s irony and the bratty singing style let us know we’re in comfortable territory here. A brisk 2:25, the song nonetheless adds layers at ever turn, so it never gets cloying. You’re initially confused and ultimately aurally pleased when the “barbershop quartet” starts cooing in the background, followed by hand claps and a slow draw down.
Keith O'Brien
Fever Ray - "When I Grow Up"
Don’t get me wrong—I can definitely get where Rick Rubin is coming from in his zeal to return to the sound of a bunch of people making music together in a room. But not so fast: part of the fascination of music like Fever Ray’s is that it resembles an emanation from the dystopian wreckage where Wall-E trolls about endlessly turning garbage (Garbage also had a song called “When I Grow Up”) into neat cubes. And there, on top of the wreckage is Karin Dreijer Andersson, sounding like the last human left—maybe she’s part-computer by now, but she’s still mostly human. You can hear it in the ache and yearning in her voice. And a computer would never dream up a line like, “You’ve got cucumbers on your eyes,” nor deliver it with such naked honesty.
Dave Klein
Free Energy - "Dream City"
The next person I hear say, “Hey, it’s that song from the Flip commercial!” gets five to the grille. Can’t you understand that there’s so much more to it beyond that perfect riff that seems plucked from a T. Rex opening act that was long forgotten before I was born? The smooth breakdown replacing the hook is refreshing and welcome, the shout-alongable “na, na- na, nas” are joyous yet perfectly restrained, and the closing saxophone is a delicate rooftop slow dance. Then again, I just outlined the ad campaigns for three more handheld electronic devices. Seeing as Free Energy are destined to be the next victim to follow the Strokes/Vampire Weekend overhyped-before-they-record-an-album-and-backlashed-before-it’s-released career trajectory, they might as well cash in while they still can.

Here is my list of thirty songs that dominated my iTunes, the songs that moved me to learn them on guitar, and the songs I will identify with 2009 forever. In no particular order. Though I suppose the top five could be my top five.

Here it is — our obligatory year-end list. Mixing things up, I decided to take a different tack this year and feature more than fifteen albums (see: previous year-end lists). With one caveat: none of us could write more than several sentences about each LP as the Decade series has been lengthy enough. An exceptionally [...]

At the beginning of the year I unleashed an article unlike anything I had ever written for this site before. Titled, "The 9's Have It: Historical Reasoning Why 2009 Will Be A Great Year for Music", I detailed the history of the last year of the decade and its overall affect on the pop culture we would experience well into the next decade. Well 2009 hasn't really disappointed at all, at least when it comes to the music. Sure, we don't know exactly where we'll be 10-years from now but if you look at all the fantastic records and singles that were released this year there's a good chance some of this will influence the next ten years of music. Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Jay-Z, Grizzly Bear, Drake, Lady Gaga, all have had there moment in the sun, shared with countless other acts vying for your attention and recessed funds, all of them pushed their respective genres into new, exciting directions, and all of them stand a good chance of lasting quite a bit longer. Here we're gonna look at the best singles of the year, next week it'll be the albums, but I really think we just witnessed a brilliant year in this form of art and we'll wind up talking about it for a long time to come.Download the ZIP #1 - 10!Top Singles #11 - 20Top Singles #21 - 30Top Singles #31 - 40Top Singles #41 - 5010. Ellie Goulding - "Under the Sheets" | If Lady Gag was the omnipresent face of pop music this year, Ellie Goulding was the under the radar, up-and-coming star of the year. Granted, Gaga had more time to establish herself, but after hearing this amazing tune her reign on the pop charts may not last long. This tune has quickly become a favorite of mine and I think with her stunning looks and incredible ability to turn a simple pop song into a dance anthem it won't be long before you fall in love with her too.9. Dirty Projectors & David Byrne - "Knotty Pine" | Compilation albums often offer some pretty tasty nuggets to help complete your collections of certain artist, but this tune off of Dark Was the Night might just be the finest original tune to come off a compilation record in ages. With the hyped up Dirty Projectors mixing and mingling with David Byrne it would be difficult not to go wrong, but these guys didn't just mail it in for the one off tune they truly wrote one of the best songs of the year and made it shine all for a very worthy charity.8. Clipse (feat. Kanye West) - "Kinda Like A Big Deal" | If you ever needed proof of how poorly the big labels are being run look no further than the two highest ranking hip-hop tracks that aren't from Jay-Z. Both Big Boi and the Clipse have been tormented by their labels pushing back their records and keeping them from capitalizing on some of the best music coming out of the genre. This single was released in April, the album that it's found on was just released last week. There's something not right about that, but at least we were able to enjoy this track and Kanye's 2nd best verse of the year for 8-months of the year!7. The Antlers - "Bear" | Last year we named "Two" the best tune of the year, this year the rest of the world caught up with us in our love of The Antlers. Propelled by the Pitchfork "Best New Music" nod The Antlers caught fire and this tune was a big reason for all the success. It is of course an emotional, captivating song that is defined by the startling way Peter Silberman croaks out the song of a surprise pregnancy and the horrors that come with it. It's touching, poignant, and beautiful all at the same time.6. Grizzly Bear - "Two Weeks" | After a couple of very successful and very promising albums Grizzly Bear made it all work for them this year with the release of Veckatimest. The record is a shining example of the power of indie pop, with its lush harmonies and beautiful melodies. No song serves more of that than "Two Weeks" a song that has dominated music fan's play lists since the moment it hit the web way back when. This song does not lose anything over time, still as beautiful and memorable as it was so many months ago. I'm pretty sure when we look back on 2009 twenty to thirty years from now this tune will still be recognized as one of the best.5. Animal Collective - "My Girls" | If Animal Collective are indeed becoming the new Grateful Dead then this is the song that all the AC-heads will wind up losing their shit over for years to come. "My Girls" rolls up everything we have come to love about Animal Collective, the pop harmonies, the lovely synth sounds and samples, the flowing, psychedelic nature of their music, into one big blanket and adds a little more pop to the mix for good nature. It's the best song they've ever written and that's saying a lot.4. Jay-Z (feat. Kanye West & Rihanna) - "Run This Town" | The best hip-hop track of the year is definitely "Run This Town". Featuring the two best rappers in the world right now and the hot, smooth voiced R&B singer of the moment, "Run This Town" is the anthem that defines the tone of The Blueprint 3. Boastful, confident, cocky, it shows a man that knows everything about himself, knows his strengths and knows how to capitalize on it at every turn. Jay-Z is at the top of his game throughout this track and Kanye stands shoulder to shoulder with his mentor on his verse. To top it all off there is nothing about Rihanna's chorus that isn't catchy and memorable. "Run This Town" is the best hip-hop had to offer this year and just about any other year.3. Phoenix - "1901" | "1901" took a band that had achieved a level of modest success and has launched them into the stratosphere of superstardom! The song is a critical and commercial success on all fronts, and why wouldn't it be. Right from the opening moments of this song it drags you inside of the music and will not let you go, not that you would ever want to be after hearing it. Now we can hear it every 30-seconds on TV, radio, the internet, anywhere we go we are inundated by Phoenix's smash hit, and we still have not gotten tired of it in the least bit. How's that for staying power.2. Atlas Sound (feat. Noah Lennox) - "Walkabout" | If I were making a general best of list and taking other people's opinions into making the list these top two songs would not be here. Instead I'm making MY year end lists and these are the two songs that affected me the most. Bradford Cox has been a prolific songwriter the last few years, releasing tons of material as Atlas Sound or Deerhunter. There's been some crap mixed in there, but for the most part he has hit the mark the majority of the time with some truly fantastic songs. None of those hold a torch to "Walkabout", the absolute prized gem of his sophomore release Logos. Yes, it is truly helped along by the amazing harmonies laid down by Animal Collective's Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox), but the layers of sound that Bradford put down for him to croon over are nothing to shake a finger at. Put together it makes one of the most inviting sounds Bradford has ever crafted and stands as a giant leap forward for him in creating subtle sonic structures.1. Girls - "Lust for Life" | With the possible exception of The Antlers, there is no song that logged more plays for me this year than Girls' "Lust for Life". But to be fair, I've had The Antlers for a lot longer than I've had girls. This song is an honest look into one man's perspective on the world. He hasn't had the easiest of lives, he has some basic desires, and he genuinely doesn't know how to attain even the most basic of his goals, but he wants it so bad. The lyrics are perfect for the time we are in and the state many of us indie music lovers find ourselves in, beaten back by unrealistic expectations and the sins of our fathers, we are forced to scrap by whatever way we can. The message may be a bit somber and melancholy, but the music gives us hope, the peppy lilt for the singing, the fast strummed guitar, the driving beat, all point to the possibility of hope. So "Maybe if I really try with all my heart, then I can make a brand new start, in love with you". It really sums up a lot of things for me in a rollercoaster 2009 and serves as the current soundtrack to my life. And that is why it's the Best Single of 2009!<script type="text/javascript">

Mark Dodds is not only an awesome dude but also knows a shitload about music. Really cool music as well. I first met him at the end of 2008 when Electrorash had been running for about 15 months or something. At the time I was working on a niche music ad network and Mark was (and still is) kicking it at Aussie indie distributor Inertia. Mark rattled off a bunch of awesome music, I pretended to know half of them, most of them are featured in this list.
Over to Mark:
“This is my 100 favourite tracks of the year, with approximately half clicking through to authorised free downloads, most courtesy of RCRDLBL. I have arranged them in ascending order as a means of “building anticipation”. I don’t want to ruin the ending, but *SPOILERS* it’s Animal Collective *SPOILERS*.
The Flaming Lips aren’t in there because I haven’t yet heard the album.
Brand New aren’t in there because I’m a grown-ass man and don’t listen to “tweemo”.
Enjoy.

Those of you out there who actually read this blog from time to time know that 2009 was a momentous year in my life. My wife gave birth to healthy, beautiful (if I do say so myself) twin girls back in February, and though there are a thousand things to worry about every day with children, my life has been on the proverbial 9th cloud ever since. One of the many wonderful things about them is that they are amazing sleepers - seriously, they’re in bed at 7 every night and only on the rarest of occasions do we see them before we have to get up for work (and besides that, my wife is usually in bed by, like, 9). Hence, lots of time for me to still run this humble little website that shares with you the music that matters to me. And in 2009 there was a whole hell of a lot of it.In the past I’ve limited my year end list to my favorite 20 albums, but it was obvious right when I started drafting this that 20 just wouldn’t suffice. Not this year. I thought about doing 25, it’s a very nice number, but even then there were albums that I really like that would’ve been left high & dry. So, this year you get to see and hear and read about my 30 favorite albums, and believe it or not there are still a few that I wish I had room for. Regardless, these are the albums that I enjoyed most this year. Among them you’ll find a bunch of the same albums everyone else seems to love, but also scattered throughout rather generously are ones that I hope differentiate Pop Headwound a little bit from the many, many other music blogs out there. Hope you find something new to love. 30. Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle - Bill CallahanThis one was a late contender for this list, as I just started listening to it after it was so highly recommended by Brook Pridemore in his Year In Review guest post a few weeks back. Callahan’s second solo album since ditching the Smog moniker has been in heavy rotation ever since, and even though I’m still getting to know these songs that are content [to ripple] along like a river in low water season (thanks Brook), it’s clear that Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle is a brilliant record (he’s dark again), and one that would no doubt be higher if I had gotten around to it sooner.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 29. There Is No Enemy - Built To SpillAfter two good-not-great albums over the past ten years, There Is No Enemy finds Built To Spill back in the business of being awesome. While it may not be quite on par with their mid-to-late 90s run of classics (not much is), it is their best effort since Keep It Like A Secret, and comes full of the expansive guitar jams and skewed alt-pop Doug Martsch & co. made their name on in the first place.MP3 :: Hindsight----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 28. S/T - The Pains of Being Pure At HeartHere is a band with a lot going for them - looks, locale, buzz, youth, and a laundry list of influences that are cooler than your bands’. The thing that sets The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart apart though from the dozens of other similarly armed indie-rock outfits who were shot through the hype machine this year are the songs - a whole album’s worth of snappy potential singles that match melodic twee-pop with fuzzed-up shoegaze. One of the year’s brightest debuts.MP3 :: Come SaturdayMP3 :: Everything With YouMP3 :: Young Adult Friction----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 27. Childish Prodigy - Kurt VileOn his Matador debut, Vile alternates between heavy, stomping full-band rockers, open-road anthems filled with bright, chirpy melodies, and murky folk-blues that feature only his voice, electric guitar, and noise effects - each showing he writes compelling songs in a wide range of styles.MP3 :: Overnight ReligionMP3 :: Hunchback----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 26. Cloud Pleaser - David Shane SmithSmith’s relocation from Brooklyn to Los Angeles has only intensified the jarring tales of consumerism, urban decay, and environmental corrosion that dominated his previous albums, Wintertower and Angry Earth. Cloud Pleaser is, to say the least, a bleak album that continues the trend - if there’s one prevailing theme at work here it’s probably about feeling disconnected from just about everyone and everything. But, ironically, Smith himself has never sounded as engaged as he does throughout these 10 songs. Dark beats, tape glitches, military march drums, jarring sound effects, ambient stretches, finger-picked acoustic guitars, and Smith’s nasal, sing-speak vocals coalesce into a seamless whole - the best album yet from a young artist whose grim worldview continues to inspire stunning songs.MP3 :: MiserablismMP3 :: Brand NewMP3 :: Beauty Force----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 25. Logos - Atlas SoundAs the leader of Deerhunter, Bradford Cox has been behind some of the most affecting (and, yes, divisive) indie-rock of the past few years. A restlessly creative spirit, his Atlas Sound project has mostly, until now, been a vehicle to set at large a massive amount of lo-fi home recordings, either on last year’s Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel or through his ever-prolific blog. Logos sees Cox taking his solo project to the next level though, with successful collaborations with Noah Lennox (aka Panda Bear) and Laetitia Sadier and a whole batch of his best drone/pop songs yet. MP3 :: Walkabout (ft. Noah Lennox)----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 24. The Ecstatic - Mos DefAnyone who’s ever seen Be Kind Rewind, Cadillac Records, or The Woodsmen knows the talents of Mos Def reach far beyond the mic. But The Ecstatic reminds us of how he made his name in the first place - this is a diverse, socially conscious, genre-hopping hip-hop record with tinges of blues-rock, soul, pop, and Latin among its 16 songs. The highlights are many, but my favorites are the soaring “Life In Marvelous Times”, a nostalgic look back at his tough Bed-Stuy roots, and “Quiet Dog”, a brooding boogie down with some deep dark rhythms. MP3 :: Life In Marvelous TimesMP3 :: Quiet DogMP3 :: Casa Bey----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 23. Tarot Sport - Fuck ButtonsTarot Sport is a more mature, fully-realized version of the electro-noise band who brought us last year’s terrific Street Horrrsing - the arrangements have more of a sense of urgency and the scream-o vocals are all but extinct. Overall this is an expansive, deeply hypnotic work that will appeal to fans of electronic music as well as left-of-center indie-rock fans.MP3 :: Surf Solar (7” edit)----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22. Face Control - Handsome FursHandsome Furs tightened things up on Face Control, streamlining the sprawling urban-paranoia of their debut, Plague Park, into focused pop-rock gems. Dan Boeckner has never had a problem writing macho, fist-pumping indie-rock anthems, but “Radio Kaliningrad” might be his best one yet. MP3 :: I’m ConfusedMP3 :: Radio Kaliningrad----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21. Album - Girls In an era when most bands using nostalgia as inspiration are going back to The Beach Boys or the synth-pop of 80’s new wave, Album looks back even further, recalling the 50s pop of your local “oldies” radio station more than anything else. The androgynous, Iggy Pop-quoting lead single, “Lust For Life”, (with its “I wish I had a boyfriend, I wish I had a loving man in my life” lyric and NC-17 video) isn’t really a fair representation, sonically, of the album. Much of it is comprised of slow-building, self-pitying anthems that, like “Hellhole Ratrace”, suck you in and repeat their refrains like mantras until you can’t help but feel a strange sort of affinity.MP3 :: Lust For LifeMP3 :: Hellhole Ratrace-----------------------------------------------------------------------------20. Feral Harmonic - Old CanesFeral Harmonic is a raucous folk-rock record that, despite being predominantly the unaided work of The Appleseed Cast’s Chris Crisci, sounds like it was recorded by a bunch of friends as part of a drunken hootenanny. Every song is a winner, but the mess of acoustic guitars, in-your-face drums, careening horn section, and shout-along lyrics on “Little Bird Courage” really stands out to these ears. MP3 :: Little Bird CourageMP3 :: Trust----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19. Get Guilty - A.C. NewmanThe second solo album from the chief new pornographer was one of the most underrated and overlooked albums of the year. Yet again Newman proves himself to be this generation’s most skilled craftsmen of melodic indie-pop, churning out infectious, blissful tune after tune. The orchestral “There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve” and “Elemental” are two of his most beautiful songs yet, and “The Heartbreak Rides” continues his long string of terrific track 2’s. Seriously, check his back catalog and tell me how often track two is just the shiznit…. MP3 :: There Are Maybe Ten Or TwelveMP3 :: Submarines of Stockholm----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18. My Maudlin Career - Camera ObscuraThe bittersweet indie-pop of these Scots is much the same on My Maudlin Career as it was on their 2006 new-classic, Let’s Get Out Of This Country. That means more reverbed, ringing guitar chords mixed with lush keyboards and Tracyanne Campbell’s unsinkable melodies. One only need listen to “French Navy” to be forever smitten.MP3 :: My Maudlin Career (follow link)MP3 :: French Navy----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 17. xx - The xxOn their debut, London’s The xx create spellbinding, noirish little songs where the negative space between notes expresses as much emotion as the music and vocals. The starkly minimalist arrangements are impressive enough on their own, but combined with the chilled-out back and forth boy-girl vocals and mature, fully-realized songs far beyond what you’d expect from a bunch of kids in their early twenties adds up to one of the year’s strongest debuts.MP3 :: Basic Space (Sapha Remix) (follow link)----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 16. Veckatimest - Grizzly BearGrizzly Bear’s elegant, painstakingly detailed third album is easily my favorite thing they’ve ever done. Their nuanced art-folk sways from sweeping, near-pop masterpieces like “Two Weeks” and “While You Wait For The Others” to cathartic, slow-building mood pieces like “Ready, Able” and “I Live With You”. Less raw and more, well, choir-boyish than the music that made my Top 10, Veckatimest is still every bit the “fucking stunning achievement” I called it way back when everyone only had their 128 kbps leaked copies.MP3 :: Cheerleader----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 15. A Brighter Light - Brook PridemoreA Brighter Light finds NY’s Pridemore once again bashing out his fiery, invective brand of punk/folk/agit-pop at a variety of deserving sources, but it also manages to be his most personal album to date. Recalling The Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle or anti-folk legend Ed Hamell, Pridemore sounds, as always, intent on moving your ass and your mind in equal measure. Overall, there’s not a weak moment on A Brighter Light – it’s a tour-de-force rock ‘n roll record that’s smart, sharp-tongued, and fun. As he says himself, “I didn’t come here to proselytize; I came to bring the noise”.MP3 :: The Buckeye State and RussellMP3 :: Remain UprightMP3 :: Stockholm St. Syndrome-----------------------------------------------------------------------------14. Only Built For Cuban Linx pt. 2 - RaekwonI’ll be perfectly honest - I’ve tried to avoid the thuggish, misogynistic, stereotype- prolonging traps of some rap music for most of life. But then, in 2006, I heard Ghostface Killah’s impossibly detailed drug heist-gone-wrong masterwork “Shaky Dog” and all bets were off. I‘d call that the best story song since Dylan’s “Hurricane”, but that‘s probably an undersell. And then I remembered that I was watching Scorsese movies and professional wrestling in my early teens, when I was actually still impressionable, and both of those are probably way more guilty of the above crimes Raekwon and his buddies, if not more so. Surely I can take this now, like, 20+ years later. Raekwon’s magnum opus is a true street poet (and a bunch of his scary-ass friends, including his bff Ghostface) rapping his (their) ass(es) off for well over an hour. And yeah it’s violent and graphic and full of exactly the kind of terrible things that I never ever want my daughters to know about. But it’s also completely enthralling - the kind of animated, vivid storytelling that most (people like me) would ignore out of ignorance. Maybe “romanticizing” isn’t the right word, but I don’t know how else to describe how I feel about the crime saga this record details.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 13. Year In The Kingdom - J. TillmanCompared to his more expansive Vacilando Territory Blues, the 9-song Year In The Kingdom can come across as a somewhat minor offering. But listen carefully and you hear a fully developed batch of songs that whisper about mortality like a man who thinks about dying a lot. Tillman sounds like he’s consumed by this inevitability - offering ruminative insights over gorgeous, hymn-like arrangements. He’s on such a streak right now that even this, his second best album of 2009, tops nearly everything else I heard this year.MP3 :: Earthly BodiesMP3 :: Though I Have Wronged You----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12. Farm - Dinosaur Jr.Yeah, 2007’s Beyond signaled a startling return to form from the original cast of Dinosaur Jr. It was a record steeped in their early, sludgy SST sound and housed a lot of Mascis’s best songs in a decade and a half. But Farm, the even better second coming of the second coming, finds the band leaning more towards their early 90s days (my personal favorite DJr. era). It was then that they were alt. rock’s best near-miss on the strength of the slacker anthems and stoned guitar-god heroics of Green Mind and Where You Been. That latter album seems to be Farm’s best point of reference, with the band playing tight, searing mid-tempo crunchers for the better part of an hour.MP3 :: I Want You To Know----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 11. Embryonic - The Flaming LipsEmbryonic is a thrillingly excessive display of warped, druggy songcraft and musicianship. It’s the band walking the fearless freak-walk instead of just talking it up with a megaphone, balloons, and a light show. Since The Soft Bulletin they’ve spent the better part of 10 years making a major label’s idea of “weird alternative” music (granted there are a few great songs mixed in there), but on Embryonic The Flaming Lips sound like a band again; albeit one that’s been hanging out on Mars and listening a lot of Can, Zappa, Beefheart, and Miles Davis. Since At War With The Mystics I wasn’t expecting to ever really like a new Flaming Lips album again, let alone love one.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------10. My Son’s Home - The Roadside GravesThe latest from New Jersey’s Roadside Graves is a raucous journey through nearly every corner of American music. The 18 songs here touch on barroom rock & roll, folk, blues, country, and soul, as well as The Pogues, Exile-era Stones, The Band, and Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue. Despite its long running time, the album is held together by the theme of family and friends trying to stick it out during hard times. Singer/lyricist John Gleason’s aptitude for using simple details to reveal universal human truths makes him stand out as a songwriter, and the 6-piece band never fails to further bring those words to vivid life. Hell, just listen to “Ruby” and see for yourself.MP3 :: RubyMP3 :: Far And WideMP3 :: My Son’s Home (demo)----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9. Outside Love - The Pink MountaintopsPart Phil Spector wall of sound pop, part Jesus & Mary Chain feedback-fueled madness, part warped folk/country, Outside Love strings together some pretty disparate influences and coalesces them into a unified set of songs about the ups, downs, and middle grounds of love. Every song is top notch, but the hauntingly romantic “Vampire” never ceases to amaze me – it's my favorite song of the year.MP3 :: VampireMP3 :: While We Were Dreaming----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. The Earth Is Black and other apocalyptic lullabies for children - Soft BlackThe Earth Is Black is a strikingly personal album from an artist spilling his guts on the effects of deep fear, religious doubt, and nightmare-induced sleep deprivation. While that may seem like soporific inspiration for a rock n’ roll record, singer-songwriter Vincent Cacchione never puts his owns demons before the good of the song. The Earth Is Black is thematically bleak, but Cacchione surrounds his words and melodies with a crackin’ band that’s equally capable of anthemic glam-folk (“I Am An Animal”), Ray Davies-like shuffles (“Time Gets Away And Has Its Way With You”), and propulsive folk-rock sing-alongs (“The Lions”, “The Earth Is Black”). It’s all brought home by the album’s cathartic finale, “Night Terrors”, whose creeping tension is relieved only by the vulnerability in the vocals. Over the past few years I’ve heard and written about a lot of New York’s up-and-coming talent - The Earth Is Black is the fanged, rabid animal at the front of the pack.MP3 :: I Am An AnimalMP3 :: The Lions-----------------------------------------------------------------------------7. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - PhoenixKicking off an album with two of the year’s very best singles (“Lisztomania” and “1901”) is a sure way to get the rest of your songs ignored, but those who managed to stop hitting repeat for “Fences” and beyond heard the most consistent record yet from these slick French indie-rockers. Never ones to shy away from their obvious commercial ambitions, the clumsily titled Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a straight pop-rock album that’s, for lack of a better way to put it, un enfer de beaucoup d'amusement pour écouter.. Seriously I don’t know how anyone with five working senses could not enjoy the hell out of this record.MP3 :: Lisztomania (A Fight For Love & 25 Hours A Day remix)MP3 :: 1901 (L’Aiglon Remix)MP3 :: Fences (The Soft Pack remix)MP3 :: Love Like A Sunset (Animal Collective remix)MP3 :: Love Like A Sunset (Shuttle remix)----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. Post Nothing - JapandroidsThe primordial garage-rock of Vancouver’s Japandroids hits with a combination of brute force and undeniable hooks. This duo may just be yelling about french kissing French girls and getting older and the tediousness of their hometown, but they do so with such conviction that you can’t help but hang on their every word. “Young Hearts Spark Fire” is one of the best angst-anthems I’ve heard in a long time, but Post Nothing is filled with 7 more songs that are its near equal.MP3 :: Young Hearts Spark FireMP3 :: Wet Hair-----------------------------------------------------------------------------5. Out Into The Snow - Simon JoynerOut Into The Snow is Simon Joyner’s 12th full-length record since debuting way back in 1993, and it finds his songwriting talent finally peaking. A highly impressionistic writer, he matches the creativity of his words with acoustic guitar and piano-driven arrangements that, on the surface, are not dissimilar to some of his obvious inspirations - Townes Van Zandt and On The Beach-era Neil Young. Though it may recall these classics, Out Into the Snow is a quietly intense album that stands entirely on its own. In my opinion, the most overlooked album of the year.MP3 :: Out Into The SnowMP3 :: Roll On----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Bromst - Dan DeaconWhat’s most apparent when listening to Bromst is that Deacon is at the peak of his creative powers - a madcap genius striving to be taken seriously as both sound artist and traditional musician. Bromst is looong, but its sizzling kinetic energy hardly wavers. Simply put, this record is fucking righteous.MP3 :: Woof Woof----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. Bitte Orca - Dirty Projectors2009 was a breakthrough year for Dirty Projectors. First they were prominently featured on the terrific Dark Was The Night compilation on a song co-written with David Byrne. Then they dropped Bitte Orca, a surprisingly accessible album, to near-universal praise from critics. It deserved every bit of it - Bitte Orca is a kaleidoscopic art-pop thrill ride. Despite being masterminded by David Longstreth, the whole record is a truly collaborative effort, which is never more evident than on Amber Coffman’s star-turn lead vocal performance on “Stillness Is The Move” - one of 2009’s best songs.MP3 :: Stillness Is The MoveMP3 :: Useless ChamberMP3 :: Temecula SunriseMP3 :: Knotty Pine (w/ David Byrne)(from Dark Was The Night)----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Merriweather Post Pavillon - Animal CollectiveMost people were ready to declare Merriweather Post Pavilion 2009’s best album when it leaked last Christmas. Yet here it is almost a year later, having withstood its unfair head start and even a moderate degree of online backlash (initiated more by competitive Grizzly Bear fans than critics or bloggers methinks). There’s no doubt that it’s proven to be every bit the classic that those first few listeners intimated. After the brooding intensity of much of Strawberry Jam, Animal Collective filled MPP with similar lush harmonies and mesmeric repetitions to those found on Panda Bear’s Person Pitch. That stylistic decision works particularly well within the album’s recurring themes of fatherhood and the struggle to overcome limitations to provide for your kids (see “My Girls”, especially). For years before Merriweather, Animal Collective churned out whimsical sing-alongs (“Grass”, “Leaf House”, “Peacebone”, etc) that seemed tailor-made for kids to blindly shout along with. It wasn’t until they started voicing adult concerns that they truly exploded with a whole new generation of indie-kids.----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Vacilando Territory Blues - J. TillmanThere are records that you hear in your life that become inextricably linked to a specific time and place. Hearing Vacilando Territory Blues for the first time last February, five days before the birth of my twin girls, gives it a distinct advantage when held up against the other great albums on this list - sentimentality. As much as I adore Merriweather Post Pavillon, Bitte Orca, and the other albums I have just written about, those feelings just don’t come close to the ones I have for this humble little folk-blues record by a guy best known (for now) as the drummer in Fleet Foxes. I just can’t hear songs like “Firstborn”, “Above All Men”, or “Someone With Child” without being immediately brought back to the (sniff, sob) happiest days of my life. Which is kind of ridiculous considering that much of Vacilando Territory Blues is made up of weary, whispered folk songs whose overall mood, while certainly celebrating life (as opposed to Year In The Kingdom’s meditations on death and what comes after it), wouldn’t be confused with “joyful” in a thousand years. When he does employ fuller arrangements the songs are just as stark, merely louder. Regardless, there’s a deeper connection here for me that won’t ever fade - every time I put it on I feel like I did on the morning my little world doubled in size. Fatherhood. Holy shit. “I don’t want to live again cause I don’t want this life to end” - yeah Josh, that about sums it up. But honestly, take away the personal affiliation and what’s left is a soul-stirring album with a cohesive mood that’s thirteen great songs deep. The most moving, most beautiful album to find my ears in a long, long time.MP3 :: James BluesMP3 :: Steel On SteelMP3 :: Firstborn-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Girls at Neumo’s, Seattle | 17 November 2009
“We’re back, back in denim”, Girls (SF) front guy Christopher Owens told the audience at Neumo’s after being asked how he like Seattle. He was referring to the fact that they were here earlier this year at the Capitol Hill Block Party, but he was also referencing Lawrence Hayward’s post Felt band Denim. Listening to Girls’ debut Album I had this inkling that they were Felt and Denim fans. A lot of the guitars have a spindly feel to them that reminds me of late period Felt, but really it was just a hunch. American bands liking felt is nothing new, the Tyde come to immediate mind and a couple songs on the new Pants Yell! have a similar thing going on. I digress, back to Girls’ Felt affectation. On hearing Owens utter the title to Lawrence’s first post-Felt album was pretty much all I needed to confirm my suspicions.
Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not all Felt, Denim (and Go-Kart Mozart) with Girls, the album has this watery, twangy, rockabilly sound to it that gives me this hallucination of Roy Orbison and Duane Eddy playing Santo & Johnny’s Sleepwalking in some underwater dive bar. The album also has the huge shoegaze bliss-out of Morning Light and the obvious Beach Boys/Jan & Dean reference in their song Big Bad Mean Motherfucker, and don’t forget Owens singing sounds a little like Elvis Costello. I’m into all of the above and have been loving this record for past few months, but the overall aesthetic of the record has this Felt/Denim feel to it that seems to transcend all the other influences that color the album.
I am certainly not alone in liking the record. Girls seem to get tons of glowing reviews for their album, but live they don’t seem to light people up. Actually, I don’t think I’ve read anywhere that said Girls are amazing live. I can’t really say that they were amazing, but they were really good. Most of their songs don’t really make you want to dance, they’re mellow dark affairs that revel in the kind of atmosphere they can create and live that is what they did. Songs like Solitude and Ghost Mouth were prime of examples of that gloomy outlook set to ethereal atmospherics. The heart of their set cranked up the energy level a noticeable amount with the trio of songs Lust for Life, Hellhole Ratrace and Morning Light getting everybody going. Owens seemed to be feeling it too, at times crouching down with his guitar in an almost Chuck Berry pose during some of the big guitar parts. I especially liked how the noise freak-out they did at the end of Hellhole Ratrace overlapped seamlessly with the shoegaze miasma of Morning Light. The rest of the set, the band settled back into a few more moody, but no less compelling songs. For an encore Owens came back out with his acoustic guitar, donned a gold trimmed baseball hat from someone in the audience and did few songs solo, one of which he called Broken Dreams Club which you can download from Living Ears along with a few other acoustic songs they did for radio station KDHX.
Something that may also be of interest to those who think I’m off my rocker with the Felt and Denim references, the French website MagicRPM has a three part conversation between Girls’ Christopher Owens and Chet “JR” White with Lawrence of Felt/Denim/Go-Kart Mozart. Dig Lawrence’s baseball cap with tinted blue visor.

Come scrivono nelle note di copertina, "Album was not recorded in any studio". E forse è così.>>>(mp3): Girls - Lust For Life(photo by Sandy Kim)

Happy Monday. I'm still wiped out from this past post-CMJ Halloween World Series weekend, but three notable indie rock tours hit town tonight (11/2) (the night the Yankees might win it all in Philadelphia). Luckily all three tours include at least two NYC-area chances to to see the bands, though some will be harder to get tickets for than others.
First up is Girls.Owens and White first united as roommates in San Francisco, but their lives couldn't have started out more differently. While White was playing in punk bands in his parents' Santa Cruz garage and going to recording school, Owens was growing up as part of the Slovenian sect of the Children of God cult, where secular music was forbidden unless one of the cult's adults decided to indulge the younger members' desire to learn the occasional Beatles or 1960s folk tune. [SFBG] Touring behind their great new True Panther/Matador "album", Girls are now in demand. They probably could have added a 2nd NYC show to their itinerary, but instead they kept it modest. They'll play a single show at Maxwell's in Hoboken (tonight), and then one at Bowery Ballroom (11/6), both of which are with Real Estate and completely sold out.
For those counting, Pitchfork recently gave the Girls album a 9.1. Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors are the only two albums that got higher ratings from the website this year, and only three other "Best New" albums got as high as a 9.0 in 2009. Those are Grizzly Bear, the Flaming Lips, and the new... Fuck Buttons.
Fuck Buttons' "Tarot Sport" was released on October 20th via ATP Recordings. The band kicked off their tour in support of it last night (11/1) in Northampton, MA. Tonight, 11/2, the show is at Bowery Ballroom.
I think they're also back on November 27th to play Market Hotel though that show has disappeared from existence... maybe just temporarily because tickets are still available for tonight's Bowery show. Growing play on all dates, and These are Powers also open tonight. Updated dates below.
These Are Powers also play Glasslands with Soft Circle and three bands from China on November 6th (more about that later), and a Cinema 16 show at Galapagos on November 21st ("we will be performing a live, original score for PSAs from the 50s and 60s").
Finally, speaking of cinema, UK band Noah and the Whale screened a movie upstairs at Pianos last night. Today (11/2), they kick off a three night run at Mercury Lounge. Robert Francis opens all three shows, and each night has a different first-of-three opener. Tonight it's Alex and Janel. Tuesday is Essie Jain. Wednesday is Sharon Van Etten. Tickets are still available for all three shows. Video from a recent BBC Radio 1 live session, below...

Now I wish I had to write about this more often… band writes hit song, band make amazing video everyone loves for hit song and then just to really “cross-over” band makes a XXX porno video for the hit song and the whole world loves it! Well, that’s basically what our weirdly interesting friends from San Francisco, Girls, did. Haha, yep they’re are back and this time they’ve gone X-rated! Finally I can classify them as shit that would scare and/or bum my mom out! I always questions bands that I like who don’t fall under that category cuz it kind of defies the very essence of rock n’ roll.
Girls, who are not only responsible for two of the most memorable and touching songs in recent memory but also two of the most memorable and touching videos as well, have now unexpectedly stepped into the SMUT-world with a new version of “Lust For Life”. Why you ask? Well, cuz who doesn’t like naked people and most likely prolly cuz no one cared about that goofy and boring song, “Laura”, they made a video for. Either way, download these songs if you don’t have them already and if you do invite some friends over and reinact the new “Lust For Life” video. Tell us about your experiences below in the comments.

By the way, I think I’m starting a religious cult…. not sure exactly what all the details are yet but just know we’re working them out right now. Just wanted to see if any of you would be down to join my church, worship rock n’ roll with me, toast Jameson, smoke the lords bud and drink my Kool-Aid? I have a feeling that this might be from all the Big Love my girlfriend and I have been watching, plus Devendra’s been getting lots of press and his cult always looks like running a pretty type ship! Plus if Edward Sharpe has a cult there’s no reason I can have one. We just need a place of worship, some autolatic weapons, yoga mats and some white robs… Sounds like a lot of shit but really it’s not. Either way it’s sounding like a really good idea to me.

One of the more amusing "controversies" I've heard discussed recently was the "shock" over the fact that the band going by the name Girls was actually comprised of all guys. "How misleading!" one of my friends remarked. Granted, you could probably be forgiven in thinking that Girls was similar to the all-girl 3 piece Vivian Girls, because, well, the names are so much alike. But what's in a name, really? Are we expecting bands like Grizzly Bear and Sea Wolf to be made up of the animals in their names? A band of actual grizzly bears? Now that's just silly. Though I suppose a band of actual girls is not silly at all. But whatever, all you really need to know is that the band Girls is all guys, and their debut album is titled "Album," which as far as album titles go, is pretty creative. Oh, and that last sentence had a sarcastinc tone built into the end of it.You could very well take Girls as being a superficial and almost-joke band, and nobody would blame you given their name and album title. The thing is, these songs and this record is so damn good that there winds up being very little funny about it at all. If anything, the joke's on us for not treating it with the respect it might deserve going into it. Stylistically speaking, the band is somewhat all over the map. Electric guitars factor hugely in Girls' sound, but it's what they do with those guitars that distinguishes them from other potentially similar bands. One second they're passing out jangly guitar pop, the next they're getting into something sounding closer to gritty lo-fi surf rock, followed by a dive into shoegaze before coming back around with something a little more garage rock passing into an instrumental and a Southern rock shuffle. The guitars are what hold it all together, anchoring the sound in familiar riffs or solo noodling that only serves to enhance each track. It's pretty wildly impressive that this band can touch on so many musical influences while simultaneously maintaining a fully grounded sound that never takes you out of the moment. The thing that really makes Girls so attractive, I think, is their ability to write songs that are generally buoyant and upbeat while throwing in bits and pieces of dischord. They purposely mess with what would otherwise be pop gems to add a twist here or there that gives each song something unique and pushes conventions. Also a big help is frontman Christopher Owens, who not only wrote this album about love and heartbreak after a messy breakup of his own, but you can largely hear the emotion in his voice on many of the songs. That's not to suggest that these songs are too far down in the dumps or judgmental, rather they push against falling into such traps. There's no "I hate you" sentiments going out here, nor does it get to the level of a Kelly Clarkson-like "my life sucks without you". Rather, it's more about accepting that the relationship is over, trying to take equal responsibility for the reasons why, and then wishing to work past it. So it's not "you're a bitch," it's "you're a bitch, but I'm an asshole". It's no holds barred and refreshingly honest about things while holding a rosy edge to all the proceedings. That's part of what helps makes "Album" so damn attractive. So to be as frank as possible, if you've not yet heard Girls' debut "Album" yet, you are most definitely missing out on one of the best records released so far this year. It's the combination of style, grace and emotion that help secure it so much love. This is essentially a gorgeous record that also seriously rocks. It comes off as feeling like something you've heard before, yet altogether innovative and different at the exact same time. There's something to be said for that, and I think that's why everybody likes it so damn much. I know I'll be thinking heavily about it come year's end, so do yourself a favor and get on this as soon as possible.Girls- Lust for LifeGirls- Hellhole RatraceNon-album b-side: Girls- SolitudeBuy "Album" from Insound

Okay, okay, Girls are the new sliced bread. Girls are the new, drug-addled color television that sleeps with young women and imbibes drugs like a youthful Stevie Nixs. Girls are, quite honestly, the next big thing, rolled in cocaine and filtered through the sometimes sunny streets of San Francisco.

Album officially drops this week from Matador, though between the previously released singles, unbearable hype, and long time leak of the, er, album called album you are probably familiar with at least a few of the songs. So Much Silence had a great write up about Girls that pretty much nails my general feeling - check that out here. Regardless, “Lust For Life” is a skewed, weirdo-pop gem and the obvious first single (it‘s been out there a while. I tacked it onto my February mixtape way back in, you guessed it, February and I was probably late to the game even then). Other than that though I’m just sinking my teeth into the rest of Album tonight for the first time…well, except for “Hellhole Ratrace”. If you haven’t heard that yet…MP3 :: Lust For Life(from Album. Part 1:
My roommate came home wearing all white and said he was only stopping in for a second, but he wanted to extend some positive energy my way before he left. He dripped with joy so I guess sparing some was no sweat. I said to him, I think I’m going to post on missed connections for the first time, but how do I know it was really a missed connection? In response he asked, Well did you make eye contact? I said, Yeah, a couple times I think. To which he replied, Go for it and even if you didn’t, who cares? What do you have to lose? I agreed, we embraced and he was off.
Part 2:
At Park Street you bounded onto the train wearing a striped pink shirt, khaki skirt, and loafers (maybe) – dress that did all it could to hold onto summer. You unabashedly read the notebook of the lady to your left between curious glances around the train – movements that assured a future of wonderfully unexpected situations.
I held a book too fat to hold comfortably and wore deep lines in my upper calves left by high sitting socks my father had just sent my way – lines of a life I leave as soon as I can each day. Left to grasp onto fleeting warmth as best I can each day.

San Francisco’s Indian summer is perfect timing for Girls debut, Album. Why? Well, our city’s definitely still got the taste of summer in our mouths, but let’s face it, San Francisco – like the flings in Girls’ lyrics those good times are nearly over, and the bittersweet taste as Fall is upon us. Album covers all the bases and savors the best parts of this season in twelve tracks – telling tales of heartbreak and past romance with a sound reminiscent of the melancholic and frustrating last days of summer, when flings have faded and you long for cooler days – making Girls’ release the soundtrack you’ll remember your Indian summer by in 2009.
What do I like about this album? It depends on what you’re looking for. It’s a colorful display of Girls’ honest versatility. It kicks off with “Lust for Life” in which singer Christopher Owens‘ howls with a rockabilly fuzz “I wish I had a suntan, I wish I had a pizza and a bottle of wine.” Over driving guitars and fast-pounding snare is Owens’ standout voice. Uniquely innocent, it is sprinkled with imperfection, but still far from squeaky-clean. Many times he never hits the note quite right, and that’s exactly why he nails it – it’s just effortlessly cool.
Then there are songs directly pitted towards Girls’ past girls. The heartfelt “Lauren Marie,” is a sweet and somber dedication that screams of love and defeat. The tambourine, eerie Bonanza-style riffs and hollowed out reverb give this track a girl group feel, while still clutching onto Girls’ easy sound. Owens croons “Oh, Lauren Marie … I might never get my arms around you but that doesn’t mean that I won’t try.” Right after that slowly rips our hearts out, we meet “Laura,” upbeat and complete with swirling guitar solos. Owens whines in the chorus “Reach out and touch me, I’m right here, and I don’t wanna fight anymore.” Polished off with foggy ooh-ahhs and ba-ba-bas in the leisurely breakdown, this song makes you want to head down to the shore in your shined-up Chevy Woody with Laura in tow. Or, if you’re like me and you heard how Owens called her a bitch in the second verse, then maybe you’re thinking, “Laura, what did you ever do to this guy?”
Girls wraps up Album with a heavy mid-tempo cut called “Darling.” With twangy guitars sounding like something straight out of the score of American Graffiti, Girls adds more diversity to the album with this song. Suntans now fading, the duo winds us down and plays us out with the smooth-riding anthemic chorus. I’m confident this song is going to be a concert crowd favorite. This album was definitely made for hand holding, long drives, and to make you just feel flat-out nostalgic. So if you happen to be looking for the ideal end of summer album, and even if you’re not, there’s so much to notice on this debut that there’s something for everyone. I’m sure this album will end up on many Best of ‘09 lists and with good reason. A band with clear promise and talent for variety keeps their fans guessing and I think Girls will do just that.
Girls releases their full-length EP today on True Panther Records. Get it here.

2009 is gonna go down as a year of scaling back and redefining the goals of our lives. Thanks to the economic backlash of lying and cheating to get to the top most of the world has felt an economic crunch and scaled back to the bare essentials and started to look in old, forgotten places for comfort. Instead of material wealth and possessions more and more folks look towards spending time with family and friends, hanging out or listening to good tunes for a good time and in turn the artists that we look to for entertainment have also scaled back. It has been the year of lo-fi music, partially out of necessity and partially because it mimics the recessed life most of us are living. As nice as it has been to have artists scaling back with us none of these lo-fi acts have done as good a job to soundtrack these trying times as Girls are able to do with their debut album Album. Released on True Panther Sounds in conjunction with Matador Records, Album is a record of the simple desires of life; love, companionship, dancing, and fun. At times it can be peppy and upbeat at others its downtrodden and melancholy, but that's what life is. The series of trials and tribulations starts of with "Lust for Life", which immediately declares it's desires with the opening line "I wish I had a boyfriend, I wish I had a loving man in my life". It continues with the wish for a father and the picture becomes a little bit clearer, he's just looking for a little direction to guide him through this life. From there the band continues to dream in moderation throughout all of their songs. Now I know that it's not the most uplifting story, nor is it a dream big scenario in any way, instead Girls are keeping things real, setting modest goals for themselves and hoping everything turns out okay. There's a lot of people that feel this way right now. Folks that have been out of work for months just want an okay paying job to keep putting food on the table or a roof over their heads, but everyday they head out looking for jobs that just aren't there. These are the people that need to be held up in these trying times and amazingly a band that grew up in a cult and wound up on the streets in his teen years is the one offering the inspiration to get through our day-to-day slog. It's an impressive message and it transcends the basic, raw emotions of the current lo-fi movement.Instead of pushing all the pretty pop music behind noise Girls revels in it, letting all the harmonies and melodies play out in front and lead the way through their emotional ride. It's the music that makes the realistic dreams sound so positive and hopeful, with the psychedelic tinges and bluesy riffs guiding us through it all. At times it can be a bit Elvis Costello at others a bit Jesus and Mary Chain, but when it comes down to it Girls is a blender of genres tossed together to enlighten us all and bring us up off our lowest lows. Now I don't claim that this music is going to "save your life" or be the answer to all your problems, but it's nice to hear an artist that is struggling right along with us with a generally positive outlook on it all. There are times throughout Album where things seem a little bleak but they vanish at the sign of the next upbeat track to dance you through till the next wave of bad hits. This is a perfect record for these times and with "Lust for Life" and "Hellhole Ratrace" it also has two of the best songs released all year. Pick it up today, you won't regret it.Girls - "Lust for Life"Girls - "Hellhole Ratrace" <script type="text/javascript">

Girls @ Cake Shop in June (more by Tim Griffin)
San Francisco's Girls (a band that's been discussed here quite a bit over the past couple months) have nearly three months of touring lined up in support of their album, Album, which comes out September 22nd on True Panther Sounds. True Panther is the home of Lemonade and Hunx and His Punx, and well as "a new label working within the Matador family". The first song off that record is posted above, and the whole thing is currently streaming at the label's website.
The band gets back from a Europe tour at end of October, and with only a little more than a week off, sets out across North America. The first date of that leg will be a November 2nd show at Maxwell's. Tickets are on sale.
A few days later, the band plays a November 6th show at the Bowery Ballroom. Tickets go on AmEx presale Wednesday, Sept. 16th at noon. General sale starts on Friday at the same time.
Album artwork, tracklist, the "Lust for Life" video, and all tour dates are below...

I pretty much hate everything about Girls. The ludicrous name, absolutely ridiculous “look” of the band, and interviews like these, where the duo of Chris Owens and Chet White come off as vapid, pretentious pill-heads, the sum of indie-rock’s “weird for the sake of weird” fashions, rivaling their buddy Ariel Pink in some sort of outsider-rock ego arms race. Then there’s Owen’s “crazy religious” upbringing, perfectly concocted for the discerning rock-writer to salivate over, and the HYPE, oh jeez the hype: Pitchfork awarded the group a spot in their 500 songs of the decade before they’ve even issued a full length.
But here’s the rub: The songs are airtight (another trait they share with Ariel Pink), and despite my natural inclination to despise the band as the no-talent hacks they come across as, the tunes mostly justify the buzz, or at least justify putting up with it. Girls specialize in the kind of shimmery pop and junky rock n’ roll that’s perfect for the last nights of summer. Starting at 10 a.m. EST on Monday, Sept. 14th, you can stream their debut album, irritatingly titled Album, at True Panther Sounds. I haven’t heard the full length yet, but if the strength of their singles thus far is any indication, putting up with obnoxious color scheme of the site will mostly be worth it.

Here’s the final album version of Girls‘ “Lust for Life,” one of my favorite tracks (up there with “Big Bad Mean Motherfucker”) from Album…
MP3: Girls – “Lust For Life” (Album Version)
And starting Monday, everyone will finally have their chance to hear Album, as the record begins streaming in full at True Panther dot Com. Of course, the following week (on 9/22), the album actually gets released– but you’d do well to pre-order right now: it’ll net you a free poster and 15% off (by entering code “girls” at checkout). And then in November, the band kicks off a tour that’ll take them from Maxwell’s in NJ all the way back to SF.
And finally, don’t forget there’s this great, somewhat risqué video for “Lust For Life” (I think I almost saw Hunx’s junx!)

(this post originally appeared on Pop Candy last week, but I've decided to re-post it with artwork and mp3's! Hope you like!)So you think you have your favorite album of the year already picked, do you?Not so fast - we still have four months of fantastic records to go through. (Well, three, because no one really releases records in December.) In the coming months, I assure you there will be some fantastic records ... some from bands you already know, some from bands you should get to know, and quite possibly your new favorite band. Here's a list of the best of the next couple months. Use it wisely!September 8th:The Clean Mister Pop (Merge) - Back in 2003 a lot of indie rock fans were finally introduced to The Clean in earnest thanks to Merge Records release of a two disc compilation of their previous works known as Anthology. For the first time since that release these Kiwis will be releasing new material and based on what we've heard so far it is a lot to be excited about. These are the guys the influenced bands like Yo La Tengo and Pavement so if you're already down with that stuff it's time to dig into the history of the genre and check these guys out!The Clean - "In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul"Yo La Tengo Popular Songs (Matador) - It has been 23-years since Yo La Tengo first released a record, but somehow this Jersey based trio are still out their making intriguing, interesting, and wonderful music. After spending the early part of this year living behind the moniker Condo Fucks, Yo La Tengo return to the indie rock sounds that they do best. Right from the very first listen to Popular Songs you know you are listening to a Yo La Tengo record, but amid a plethora of textures and sounds it's easy to get lost and realize the beauty of any new music the unleash on us.Yo La Tengo - "Here To Fall"Vivian Girls Everything Goes Wrong (In the Red) - Last year's buzz band has become this year's hated on trio, but I suppose success has always bred contempt. Whatever Vivian Girls immediately prove that last year's self-titled success story was no fluke. On Everything Goes Wrong the girls once again opt for short, fast paced tunes that attack the listener and force them to take notice of what they're listening to. There's honestly not much change in the sound or structure of the songs, but when you have good tunes pumping out you don't really need to change it up.Vivian Girls - "The End"Wild Beasts Two Dancers (Domino) - Last year's Limbo, Panto may have been a promising album that unleashed a remarkable new singer on us, but for their sophomore release Wild Beasts have really stepped the game up even further exploring their sounds with further depth and going way deeper on their sensual lyrics. Every song on Two Dancers has the ability to wrap around you, comfort you, keep you warm, just like a blanket of amazingly complex and beautiful sounds. This is without a doubt one of the year's best records even if you've never heard of the band before.Wild Beasts - "All the King's Men"September 11th:Jay-Z The Blueprint 3 (Roc Nation) - Based on early listens to Jay-Z's new record, Diddy went and pushed his new record to next year that's how much of an impact The Blueprint 3 is expected to have on hip-hop. And let's face it hip-hop needs something like this right now because it has been a really down year for the genre. At this point we've all had at least a taste of the final chapter of Jay-Z's Blueprint trilogy and if songs like "D.O.A." and "Run This Town" aren't enough to get you excited, then you're probably never going to become a fan of hip-hop.September 15th:Muse The Resistance (Warner Bros.) - Muse are one of those bands that, despite the digital age of music we are firmly in, somehow manages to drum up a ton of excitement every time they release a new album or announce a tour or even re-release something. Their epic sound just manages to resonate deeply within music fans and most are expecting The Resistance to measure up to all the lofty expectations heaped on them. I won't be surprised if it's a bit of a down note, but then I won't be surprised if they made the best record of the year either.Muse - "Uprising"Grand Archives Keep In Mind Frankenstein (Sub Pop) - Last year's debut proved that Ben Bridwell wasn't the only member of Carissa's Weird that could make it on their own, and now Mat Brooke's Grand Archives gets to get compared with them at every step. It's kind of funny though, despite all the success that Band of Horses have had Grand Archives are the ones pumping out albums and keeping their fans interested in their sounds. After hearing this album you may not even worry about whether or not there will be another Band of Horses record.Grand Archives - "Oslo Novelist"The Fresh & Onlys Grey-Eyed Girls (Woodsist) - For the second time this year The Fresh & Onlys are releasing an album. This time around there are some expectations on the band thanks to the way they wowed us on their full length debut. Once again they mix garage and psych rock with the the wonders of off beat pop music and somehow they blend together to form a nice mix of high energy music to get down to.The Fresh & Onlys - "Invisible Forces"Dappled Cities Zounds (Dangerbird) - For whatever reason it is always tough for an Australian band to make here in the States which makes absolutely no sense in my mind. For years Americans have been obsessed with the culture of Australia (how else to explain the celebrity of the Crocodile Hunter?) and yet their best known musical import is probably still Natalie Imbruglia. Hopefully you will give Dappled Cities third album a chance and let their high energy tunes win you over on Australian music.Dappled Cities - "Answer Is Zero"September 22nd:Monsters of Folk Monsters of Folk (Rough Trade) - With Jim James, Conor Oberst, and M. Ward joining forces to form the Monster of Folk there is no doubt that people are going to be lining up for a taste of these tunes, or at least refreshing their preferred torrent site, but based on what we've heard already these guys didn't just join forces to make money. No these three titans of tuneful folk sounds have really thrown their talents together and created something wonderful and special. This may wind up being the most talked about supergroup of the fall, at least you know they'll beat out Chickenfoot.Monsters of Folk - "Say Please"Islands Vapours (Anti-) - Folks still mourning the death of the Unicorns need to start moving on with their lives. Yes their one album was one of the best albums release in the last ten years but Nick Diamonds has moved on to Islands and has spent his past two records making some very interesting, quirky, tunes. We expect Vapours will be no different, but then we never know quite what to expect when Nick Diamonds is involved, so we're gonna take a wait and see approach with this one.Islands - "Vapours"Girls Album (True Panther Sounds) - If you are tired of hearing about lo-fi bands and their noise meets pop sounds then skip past Girls debut Album and listen to something somewhere else. If you appreciate the bands that take a utilizing the resurgence of lo-fi to make brilliantly dirty pop tunes then this is definitely for you.Girls - "Lust for Life"The Very Best Warm Heart of Africa (Green Owl) - Last year The Very Best came out of nowhere to crash the party and make it onto year end lists all over the place with their thrown together mix tape. This year the duo have put in a bit more time and recorded a true full length debut that hopefully will build on the amazing tunes they put out last year. If for nothing else the guest appearances of M.I.A. and Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig make this noteworthy but we have a feeling there's a lot more to it then that. The Very Best (feat. M.I.A.) - "Rain Dance"September 29th:Boredoms Super Roots 10 (Thrill Jockey) - Japan's Boredoms have spent the last few years having fun putting together big concerts based on dates and a total amount of drummers, but this year will instead celebrate an eclipse and the release of Super Roots 10. If you like droning metal or like to experiment with different sounds then this is a record you'll need to check out. If change makes you uneasy you might wanna head in a different direction.Boredoms - "Ant 10 (Lindstrom Remix)"Princeton Cocoon of Love (Kanine) - Princeton jumped into our lives last year with a wonderful EP inspired by Virginia Woolfe that was fool of hooks, catchy tunes, and tons of energy. This year the band are putting out their full length debut and if it's anything like the EP it will immediately be one of our favorite things to listen to. These guys are young, good looking, and talented, and it seems as if they are about to break out in a very big way.Princeton - "Calyspo Gold"Phonograph OKNO (self) - Having impressed the likes of Wilco, NPR, and and Uncut Magazine with their self-titled debut the pressure is on for Phonograph's sophomore release. They spent most of the summer debuting the new songs live here in New York City and now that they have been tested and poured over are finally ready to release it to all of you. If you're the type that goes for the alt-country scene then this will probably wind up being your fall soundtrack.October 6th:Mission of Burma The Sound The Speed The Light (Matador) - Of all the bands who have gone the come back route lately Mission of Burma have really redefined what it means to come back from retirement. They have tour relentlessly since returning from a hiatus that lasted more then 20-years and they've also gone and recorded two fantastic albums that have made them as relevant and important as they ever were back in the 1980's. Now the band are releasing their third album since coming back and we are all expecting more of the same post-punk that has made their return to the stage so incredible.Mission of Burma - "1, 2, 3, Party!!!"The Mountain Goats The Life of the World To Come (4AD) - With each passing album John Darnielle seems to become more and more reliant on a band and on other musicians to help out on his albums. It has led to a divide amongst Mountain Goats fans who want Darnielle to perform solo and those that love the new band setup. Well the band ones are apparently going to win out again as Darnielle turns to them for a Biblically themed album. Every song on the record is named after a verse from the bible and it may or may not play into the songs as well. I'm interested to see what he's concocted for this one.The Mountain Goats - "Gensis 3:23"The Clientele Bonfires on the Heath (Merge) - As other Merge bands like Spoon and Arcade Fire have risen from obscure indie bands to chart topping success stories, The Clientele have stayed relatively underrated for their whole career. This is despite having recorded some of the best albums the revered label has ever released. Maybe they will break through onto the charts with the release of Bonfire on the Heath but even if they don't I'm sure they will more then satisfy their rabid fans with more of their awesome songs. The Clientele - "I Wonder Who We Are"A Place to Bury Strangers Exploding Head (Mute) - This record is meant to be listened to loud! No even louder then that! Push the envelope, feel your ear drums start to bleed, and then you realize that the music is meant to penetrate deeper then anything you've ever heard before. It's startling, but beautiful and amazing at the same time, but if you listen to this for too long your hearing will vanish before you know it.A Place to Bury Strangers - "In Your Heart"October 13th:Lightning Bolt Earthly Delights (Load) - Anyone that knows anything about Lightning Bolt knows that the true joy of being one of their fans is seeing them live on the floor of your favorite venue. Live the duo are absolutely insane, but in order for them to have new stuff to play they have to put out records and for the first time in 4-years we are getting a new record from them. This time out it's 3xLP and I'm sure it will be loud and fast though I've heard nothing from it yet. Lightning Bolt drummer Brian Chippendale (one of the best drummers in the world) seems sure we won't have to wait too long to hear it saying, "destined to be leaked onto the internet by ... hmmm. take a guess, maybe August 31? early September? you tell me."Lightning Bolt - "Colossus"BOAT Setting the Paces (Magik Marker) - BOAT have already been around for a couple of years but until now have mostly existed as a West coast entity. Hopefully that will all change with the release of their fantastic Setting the Paces full length, a record that reminds of us of another West coast indie pop band - The Shins. The songs here are blissful, harmonious, and light and definitely are the type of sunny tunes that make a perfect soundtrack as the leaves start to change colors. This is one that is not to be missed.BOAT - "We've Been Friends Since 1989"Grooms Rejoicer (Death By Audio) - You may have heard of Grooms by their previous name, The Muggabears, a New York City band that gets a good amount of love from the local press yet still plays shows in intimate, cozy spaces. Their Pavement inspired tunes have been all over the internet for a few years but for whatever reason the band has shifted a bit going a darker route for their debut record as Grooms. The tunes are still pretty dynamic and are definitely worthy of just as much love if not more.Grooms - "Dreamsucker"October 20th:Flight of the Conchords I Told You I Was Freaky (Sub Pop) - Like they did with their debut album, Flight of the Conchords are basically just packaging the tunes from the second season of their brilliant TV show for consumption. But based on the tremendous nature of the music of season 2 we are due an album where we will not be able to control our laughing. Sure we may have heard them all but it doesn't make it any less of a record!Flight of the Conchords - "Ladies of the World"Sufjan Stevens The BQE (Asthmatic Kitty) - At this point it doesn't seem like Sufjan Stevens is making any headway on his 50-states project which is a real shame but we will have to move on. Instead Sufjan spent a few months riding on one of the worst highways in all the world the BQE (Brooklyn-Queens Expressway) and finding that the road had a musical composition all of it's own. Sufjan translated it to music and performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music late last year. If you missed it then you'll finally get to hear what you missed.Atlas Sound Logos (Kranky) - An early, rough copy of Logos has been floating around the internet since late last year when Bradford Cox left his hard drive unprotected, but we have a feeling a lot of those recordings have changed in the time since. Our first exposure to the new album was the amazing "Walkabout" which features Noah Lennox (aka Panda Bear of Animal Collective) on it. If that song is just the tip of the ice berg then Logos will go down as one of the great records of the year.Atlas Sound (feat. Noah Lennox) - "Walkabout"Florence and the Machine Lungs (Universal Republic) - The United States always seems to be a step behind and maybe it's because we don't get international music releases for months while they are blowing away the rest of the world. The latest example of this is Florence and the Machine's unbelievable Lungs and album that is nominated for the Mercury Prize in England and has been wowing foreign audiences since July. At long last it will be released in the US and non-file sharing music fans will finally hear what all the fuss is about.Florence and the Machine - "Kiss With A Fist"<script type="text/javascript">

Who: GirlsLocation: San Francisco, CAelbo.ws Ranking: #38Thoughts: With all the hype swirling around Northern California's all guy group Girls, I was a little tentative going into my first listen of their debut record aptly titled Album. I thought it would be more of the same lo-fi that's been pouring out of every corner of the U.S. this year, but like Nodzzz before them Girls prove that the lo-fi aesthetic of San Francisco is not to hide flaws but to make pop perfection seem a little dirtier. The songs found on Album range from short little pop vignettes, to beautifully fleshed out pop anthems that soar through a range of emotions all while being recorded on the low end side of things. It makes for a wonderful listen, particularly the two singles "Hellhole Ratrace" and "Lust for Life". I'm thoroughly impressed with this record, and to think I was worried that Matador was just looking to cash in on the lo-fi craze of '09 but nothing could be further from the truth. These guys are truly legit.Verdict: very, very Buzzworthy!Listen: Girls - "Lust for Life"Girls - "Hellhole Ratrace"Girls - "Curls"<script type="text/javascript">

It’s only been three weeks since I featured San Fran’s Girls’ last video – ‘Hellhole Ratrace’. Well here they are again with their two and a half minute fun time happy tune ‘Lust for Life’ (no relation). It’s an updated video for an older song (see the first one on Youtube) which will appear on the annoyingly-titled album Album out in late September.

Fuck.. I blew it so hard with Girls (no pun intended). I should have been up this so long ago but you can’t win ‘em all and, even though everyone was talking about them, I was too busy liking some dumb pop song. There is only like ten San Francisco bands so you would think I could get a better handle on things. The point, however, is that their album should be out sooner than later and it’s gonna rule. I wonder how long it will take them to move to another city. Just kidding.. sort of.

Last week I asked my Twitter followers for their submission to a newTwitter mixtape or Twixtape for short:
What’s your perfect summer song for 2009?
There was about 50 responses or so and I had a great time collating as many tracks as I could for the mixtape below. There’s some crackers and belters right here: That Classixx Phoenix remix, the Alice in Wonderland electronic song, Atmosphere’s summery jam, the stupendous ‘So Far to Go’ from J Dilla, the clattering boogie funk of Dam Funk, an excellent tune from Wave Machines, an acoustic Yeah Yeah Yeahs a classic from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and up-to-date indie hits from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Girls.
If I didn’t include your song, it’s because time or legalities didn’t allow it. Enjoy the mixtape. Hopefully, some of these songs will soundtrack your summer..

To get any questions out of the way, “Lust for Life,” a newish song by the San Fransisco based band Girls, is definitely not an Iggy Pop cover. Despite its name the song is less sneering-punk and more of a mid tempo pop song that is one of the strongest the band has put out. The track, which features the band’s trademark jangly guitars and pop influenced song structures (including some stellar tambourine and what sounds like a harmonica), shows the great potential that the band has. With some propulsive guitars guiding the song along the jaded (and androgynous) lyrics kick in, “I wish I had a boyfriend, I wish had a loving man in my life, I wish I had a father, maybe then I would have turned out right.” Along with the great seven minute pop rock lead single “Hellhole Ratrace,” “Lust For Life” has given the band a big boost prior to even making an album, both tracks paving the way for a band that I imagine we will be hearing a lot about in the very near future.

The beautiful stress of SXSW is the ongoing strategic endeavor to reconcile which of the several dozens if not hundreds of bands you really want to see with the amount of time you have and the creative manipulative scheduling you can come up with. Though the onslaught of great new music continued this month, February 2009 had much more rewarding pleasures in store for me. On Monday the 9th my twins arrived - a few weeks sooner than expected but safe and sound nonetheless. My time since has been filled with surreal moments like the one pictured, with lots of late night feedings, burbings, and dirty diapers too. I guess in a way those moments are pretty surreal as well. Here is some new music I’ve been listening to with “my girls” this month, all released or heard for the first time over the last 28 days...MP3 :: My Maudlin Career / Camera Obscura - (original post)MP3 :: Optimist vs. The Silent Alarm (When The Saints Go Marching In) / Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - (original post)MP3 :: 18 Wheels / Evening Magazine - (original post)MP3 :: Lust For Life / GirlsMP3 :: Norman Bleik / I Was A King - (original post)MP3 :: Lalita / The Love Language - (original post)MP3 :: The Lions / Soft Black - (original post)MP3 :: Me No / Clem Snide - (original post)MP3 :: Cloud of Evil / Blackout BeachMP3 :: Middle Cyclone / Neko Case - (original post)MP3 :: James Blues / J Tillman - (original post)MP3 :: The Poet / Matt Singer - (original post)MP3 :: Future Primitive / PapercutsMP3 :: Red Oak Way / Lotus Plaza - (original post)MP3 :: Paragon Point / Tim Hecker - (original post)------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heute: Girls - “Lust for Life”.

After a recommendation from Kip of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, I was able to discover a group called Girls who currently reside in San Francisco. Information is kind of scarce, though, from culling through a couple of older articles, they are primarily a duo that consists of Chet JR White and Christopher Owens. They’ve released a couple of 7″ singles, and according to their myspace are currently at work on a full-length.
One of the tracks I instantly gravitated to upon listening was “Lust for Life”, which is not an Iggy Pop cover if that is what you may have instantly thought of when reading that. It’s a decisively simple song, opening with a catchy guitar riff, followed by some very peculiar lyrics about desire. Whatever the case may be, it’s a great little pop song. One that seems to end too soon, but one you’ll have a hard time getting rid of afterwards.

7'' Up !

<style>

Acheter Hal Singer / Jef Gilson
L'année dernière, j'aurais dû vous parler de Message from the Tribe ou de Reflections in the sea of nurnen. <style>

Acheter Fleetwood Mac - Tusk

<style>

Distratti, incapaci o astuti?Chi se ne frega, si arriva in fondo al disco e c'è questo pezzo, Bright Side, e non importa nient'altro.>>>(mp3): The Soft Pack - Bright Side>>>(mp3): The Muslims - Grinding Halt (The Cure cover)>>>(video): The Soft Pack - Extinction

The Good:
Islands - "Creeper"; Nick Thornburn has already proven his ability to pen addictively catchy pop songs with The Unicorns and on the first Islands album, but with "Creeper" he may have outdone himself. This song is syrupy smooth, a song of a broken heart with a dance beat and just enough rock licks to appease even the most jaded of music snobs. Its a killer song that gives me super high

In 2006, Christopher Owens and Liza Thorn began a music project called Curls, which dissolved itself when Liza decided to focus more on her new band, Bridez. Not to be dissuaded, Christopher recruited San Francisco's infamous ladykiller Chet "JR" White to join him and changed the band's name to Girls. I'm certainly biased when I showcase music that is made by my friends but I think you will find the thunderous washes of dreamy guitar, gymnastic vocals, absurd and romantic lyrics, and concept (songs about girls, for girls, displaying girly emotion) irresistible. When I recently attended my friend Aaron's birthday party, their song "Lust For Life" came on over the party and about 12 of us sang along every word to JR. He became visibly uncomfortable and perhaps even a bit violated. I guess we just couldn't help ourselves. OR MAYBE IT WAS THE DRUGS.I have an idea! Why don't you decide? MP3s are below. Also, Girls will be playing their first show tentatively in February at the Oakland Museum. Chris is splitting his time between Girls and playing shows with Holy Shit so a tour has yet to be announced.
