Music Alliance Pact :: October 2008

A couple of weeks ago, the forward-thinking Jason from The Pop Cop emailed IGIF and about fifteen other blogs around the world seeking their participation in what he called a way to "introduce your favourite music to a worldwide audience [that] would show the strength of the music blogging community in a way that has never been done before." Hyperbole aside, his idea was simple: have a collection of music blogs around the world choose one song from a band from their countries which would then be collected and posted on each blog. The kinks are still being worked out for next month, but this collection for October is a great start for what we all hope to be a feature collecting the best of the world that grows and strengthens as time goes on. Without further ado, here is the Music Alliance Pact selection for October 2008: AMERICA – I Guess I'm Floating[MP3] Arizona - The Glowing BirdThis is the title track from the Brooklyn band's sophomore album which came out on October 14 on Echo Mountain. One of Arizona's biggest strengths has always been the tension they create in each one of their songs. Riffs explode from quiet, acoustic melodies, noise falls flat for subtle re-beautification, and genres bounce in and out, as if each track is a medley showcasing Arizona's best musical traits. ARGENTINA – Zonaindie [MP3] Brian Storming - France"France" is the new single by Brian Storming, a psychedelic pop orchestra from Buenos Aires. This band was the supporting act for Coldplay and Björk when they performed in Argentina. The song is included on their new EP, Brian Storming Avec L´Enchanting Device. AUSTRALIA – Who The Bloody Hell Are They?[MP3] Miami Horror - Don't Be On With HerMiami Horror pretty much blew everyone's mind from the start, just by being called Miami Horror even though he's a producer from Melbourne (kinda like when everyone freaked about The Streets being just one guy). Then he cemented the name he had made for himself with unapologetically synth-heavy remixes - bootleg and official - of a crazy-wide array of artists from Perth's The Dirty Secrets to France's Stardust. And now here he is with the official release of his first single. DENMARK – Pastries, Peppers And Canals[MP3] Diefenbach - On The MoveDiefenbach have been long-time stalwarts of the Danish indie scene, starting out as a post-rock band and gradually evolving into what they are today. Think Beach Boys meets Mogwai meets...well, Diefenbach, actually. The new album Dark Spinner is due in late October but the track we're presenting is from 2005's Set And Drift. ENGLAND – The Daily Growl[MP3] Absentee - BitchstealerAbsentee’s debut album proper Schmotime was one of The Daily Growl’s favourites of 2006, and new record Victory Shorts is a direct continuation of what the Londoners do best. Singer Dan Michaelson's ravaged drawl, the sweet boy-girl vocal play-offs with keyboardist Melinda Bronstein and hugely pleasing riffs from Babak Ganjei all call to mind a much less polished Teenage Fanclub or a poppier Pavement. ICELAND – I Love Icelandic Music[MP3] Plúseinn - ShakeThe man behind the band Plúseinn is Árni Rúnar Hlöðversson also known as Árni Plúseinn (a.k.a. Árni +1). He recently released an album called Lettuce And Tomato, made in his apartment in Brooklyn, New York under the name Hungry And The Burger. Árni Rúnar is and was involved in a lot of Icelandic bands and projects (e.g. Hairdoctor, Motion Boys) and is a founding member of the band FM Belfast. IRELAND – Nialler9[MP3] Fight Like Apes - DigifuckerFLA have just released their debut Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion in Ireland and the UK. The album was produced by John Goodmanson in Seattle over the summer. They are currently touring the UK with The Ting Tings. ITALY – Polaroid [MP3] Le Man Avec Les Lunettes - The Happy Birth Of You And MeLMALL was born in the winter of 2004, actually composed by six-piece who plays sweet POP with awesome melodies! They have also toured Italy and Europe extensively (France, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway). In 2008, after some EPs, split singles, compilations in different formats, LMALL released their first complete album Plaskaplaskabombelibom which is free to download from their website. PERU – Side of the Blog [MP3] ERA - Opium"Opium" is taken from ERA’s second album Ufocalipsis which was released last year. They've been called "South America's answer to Muse" if that's your sorta thing. SCOTLAND – The Pop Cop [MP3] Roddy Hart - Dead Of The NightRoddy Hart made the folk-rock masterpiece Bookmarks, arguably one of the best albums to have come out of Scotland. "Dead Of The Night" is the first fruit from its follow-up due out in 2009. It’s a live favourite and easily the most immediate pop song the Glaswegian has ever written. SPAIN – El Blog De La Nadadora [MP3] Blacanova - Los RemediosBlacanova is a band from Seville and this song is from their second demo, Perro EP. They are influenced by Joy Division, Seefeel, The Cure, Spanish band Sr Chinarro, David Lynch and Tod Browning films, and the writer Alejandra Pizarnik. Their music is a cross between dark pop, IDM (intelligent dance music) and shoegaze. SWEDEN – Swedesplease [MP3] Tvärvägen - SeptemberTvärvägen is an eclectic one-man orchestra from Gustavsburg, Sweden. Notice both the clattering instrumentation and hummable melody. It's that dichotomy that makes Tvärvägen so unforgettable. The band's debut record is out November 6 on the small label Knoppar. That does it for the first installment of the Music Alliance Pact series. Let us know what you think in the comments. If there are discrepancies in the song descriptions, please keep in mind that these were written by the authors of the blogs who chose the tracks. If you'd prefer all the songs in one zip folder, you can grab them here.

A monthly feature where music bloggers across the world share a track from their home country which they are excited about. We have 12 countries represented in all right now. On the same day, each other represented country will simultaneously post this list on their blog. So America, Argentina, Australia, Denmark, England, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Peru, Scotland, Spain and Sweden - What’s in your ears? Click the song title to listen/download. Music Alliance Pact

A month ago I got an email from a fellow blogger recommending some sort of music exchange program. The idea is this: get a few country specific blogs (such as this one you’re reading) and get them to upload a song a month to be reposted in all the other participating blogs, so that the music gets exposure outside that blog’s readership. Good idea I thought, so we joined up. And this is the first of a monthly exchange of world music galore.

(MySpace). Who The Bloody Hell Are They? Nialler9 (Irlanda) Fight Like Apes – Digifucker Esta banda acaba de lanzar su álbum debut, Fight Like Apes And The Mystery Of The Golden Medallion en Irlanda y el Reino Unido.

Music Alliance Pact - October 2008

When The Pop Cop launched in a blizzard of buy-one-get-one-free fireworks and 17 frowning pipers marching down our pot-holed neighbourhood, we deliberately made this website a platform to showcase Scotland's music scene. In a way, though, we are preaching to a willing and predominantly good-looking audience. You love Scottish music. You want to hear more of it.So the question we asked ourselves was this: How could we force this nation's mighty tunes down the ears of those who didn't want it, need it or even give a toss about it?Then one evening at home, it was a Thursday, while staring at tiny droplets of rain racing down the window, we had an idea... but it was shit so we scrapped it.A few weeks later we had another idea. There are foreign music blogs who have a similar ethos to The Pop Cop when it comes to representing their own country's interests, so each of us should pick our favourite song every month and unite to give our our readers the greatest soundtrack on the planet. And today - after six years of trying to find one music blog from every single nation in the world (damn your silence, Vatican City) - that is precisely what is happening for the first time under the grand name of the Music Alliance Pact, or MAP for short. The Pop Cop has persuaded 12 of the best blogs in four continents to share their favourite song of the month and simultaneously post the entire collection on their own sites on October 15. And they will continue to do so on the 15th of every month until they die (seriously, we have it in writing).Ladies, gentlemen and hermaphrodites, we present you with the chosen songs of the Music Alliance Pact - October 2008:SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop4 Roddy Hart – Dead Of The NightRoddy Hart made the folk-rock masterpiece Bookmarks, arguably one of the best albums to have come out of Scotland. Their music is a cross between dark pop, IDM and shoegaze.SWEDEN: Swedesplease4 Tvärvägen – SeptemberTvärvägen is an eclectic one-man orchestra from Gustavsburg, Sweden. Notice both the clattering instrumentation and hummable melody. It's that dichotomy that makes Tvärvägen so unforgettable. The band's debut record is out on November 6 on the small label Knoppar. If you would prefer to download all 12 songs in one go, click here
