The 2009 Austin City Limit’s Music Festival lineup has been announced and as usual I have mixed feelings. Much like last year the headliners are extremely underwhelming. I would like to see the Beastie Boys and I guess it might be kind of cool to see Pearl Jam, but I am terrified about the crowd Dave Matthews will bring to the festival. Don’t get me wrong, I like Dave’s music, but it’s no secret that he has the douchiest frat following of any band out there. I cringe when I think about all the backward hats and high-fives he will without a doubt bring to Zilker. Also, I’m not sure about the John Legend selection, it’s either pure genius or horrible, but I am interested to see how he works out in a festival setting.
I used to spend a lot of time complaining about the headliners, but last year it occurred to me that I rarely hang around to see them, and if I do it’s not like I’m trying to rush the stage or anything. Typically I get a bottle of wine and sit back in my lawn chair and just enjoy the music. The real reason I attend ACL is for the middle tiered bands, and this year the lineup looks spectacular. With bands like Bon Iver, Andrew Bird, Sonic Youth, The Decemberists, Grizzly Bear, The Walkmen, Blitzen Trapper, Here We Go Magic, Dr. Dog, Deer Tick, Suckers, The DoDo’s, and Daniel Johnston I would say this lineup is a win.
We are interested in hearing your thoughts on the lineup so feel free to comment.

If you’ve planned ahead, then you might be attending the free show/recording session Middle Distance Runner is putting on for WTMD at the 8×10 this afternoon. Should be pretty awesome to hear some new songs and acoustical versions. Tonight in Baltimore there are some other notable shows though starting with Necking, Teeth Mountain, Whales and Cops, Hume, and Twins at the Hexagon. Over at the Sidebar, Me You Us Them perform with Appomattox and T-Shirt T-Shirt. Down in DC don’t miss out on The Dance Party, Ra Ra Rasputin, Greenland, and The Nunchucks at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Up in Philly again there’s a load of great shows. First up is The Subjects and Hank IV at Pilam. Next M83 and School Of Seven Bells play the Starlight Ballroom. Finally Peter and the Wolf and Juliette Commagere play the Fire while Kings of Leon, We Are Scientists, and The Whigs conquer the Electric Factory.

The family Followill are a fun-loving bunch apparently, because these videos show little more than a bunch of dudes goofing around, albeit with guitars and money and major record deals and lots and lots of free time. There are bits of the recording process interspersed between hanging out and rampant non sequiturs, but the reality is, Kings Of Leon haven't even released Only By The Night yet (it's out September 23) and its already garnering more buzz than all three of their previous efforts combined. Maybe that's just the haircuts or something (very Metallica), but even we're kind of looking forward to the album's release. Honest.

Kings of Leon
In these days of disposable music and ever evolving fashion, it takes a certain kind of band to steadily improve throughout their career to become stadium filling giants with their integrity still intact.
While most bands of any considerable success are victims to wishy washy indecison or fall foul of fans when they become big, it really is a special band to achieve global success whilst getting continually better and never selling out. Enter that special band, Kings of Leon. On the 22nd of September, the creme of the crop of stadium bands will release their fourth album- “Only By The Night” and they’ve already let us have a couple of tasters, which is nice.
The first single will be “Sex on Fire” which is a driving, melencholy choice- almost sounding like all three of the previous albums rolled into one seemless, fist punching, tear jerking rock anthem.
Then there’s “Crawl”. Pretty muc picking up at the exact point “Becuase of the Times” left off, but with added balls and steel that they probably gained from becoming one of the biggest bands in the world. “Crawl” storms along, blasting out of you speakers and sees Caleb on great howling, yelping form as usual.
If these two songs act anything like an indicator of what’s to come, everyone’s in for a treat. This is a band on top of their game (though, there’s never been a point when they’ve not been on form has there..) unwilling to compromise or even sit back and relax.
Now that my gushing and over excited fan boy rambling is over, have a listen to the songs yo’ self.
Crawl
Both songs can be heard here.

The Southern boys come rock royalty, Kings of Leon, are set to embark on their North American tour in support of the upcoming release Only By The Night. The band is slowly leaking tracks from the upcoming release with “Crawl” already circulating the web and “Sex on Fire” streaming on the bands MySpace page. The band makes a stop here in Austin, setting up shop in the venue that has been called the “place where good sound goes to die”. The Austin Music Hall is presented with the feat of shrugging of the negative response to the newly remodeled space and it’s lacking in improvement on the previous model. There’s no doubt that this show will sell out, but will the experience be worth the ticket price?

Kings of Leon
So Kings of Leon has posted a new song up on their Myspace page– in case you didn’t already see the blog storm it has caused in a little over 24 hours. “Sex on Fire” is a helluva lot different than anything we heard on Because of the Times and it really did it for me, in terms of putting their September 23rd release Only By The Night on my anticipation list. “Crawl” really didn’t do that for me.
Listen to both songs below:-
Kings of Leon - Sex On Fire
Kings of Leon - Crawl

1. Ray Charles - Oh, What a Beautiful Morning - This song is an easy sell, though I'm not sure how many people my age group know it. This is Ray at his best, taking this old standard and making it shine. If this song doesn't get you pumped to start the day, I don't know what will. [from Standards|buy]2. Kings of Leon - Crawl - Fuzzy wuzzy was a bass tone. And so this song followed along. It isn't quite what I wanted or expected out of the Kings of Leon, but singer Caleb Followill's voice still dominates all else. The fantastic single "Sex on Fire" is streaming on their myspace and is the song I wish I could post here. How's that for a glowing, informative review!? [from Only By the Night (out 9.23)|info]3. Wild Sweet Orange - Tilt - I had high hopes for this band last November, hopes that dissipated slightly as I listened to more of their music. There are some great tracks on this album ("Land of No Return", "Seeing & Believing", "House of Regret"), though it'd be stronger if "Wrestle with God" was included, but the songs that aren't great sound like they're trying too hard to be profound. "Tilt" is really nice though. Reminds me of early Jimmy Eat World. [from We Have Cause to be Uneasy|buy]4. The Theater Fire - Swimming - It's been over two years since I wrote about The Theater Fire, but they were one of the very first bands I discovered through the world of blogging and opened my eyes to the potential of this whole endeavor. This track is actually one of their first, all the way back from 2003, a sort of cowboy confessional. Really endearing. [from The Theater Fire|buy]

STAGES
MOVISTAR STAGE: RAGDOG, THE KOOKS, THE BREEDES, KINGS OF LEON, SEX PISTOLS, KAISER CHIEFS, LOS PLANETAS
WALKMAN STAGE: ANTONIA FONT, DORIAN, THE STRANGLERS, MOGWAI performing Mogwai Young Team, CSS, FOALS, TIGA
CONVERSE STAGE: PETE AND THE PIRATE, MYSTERY JETS, SHOUT OUT LOUDS, LOS CAMPESINOS!, BIFFY CLYRO, THE RAVEONETTES, LEILA, NEON NEON, REX THE DOG
LEVI’S STAGE: MISHIMA, PETER VAN POEHL, ROUGH TRADE DJS, GO MAG DJS, FACTO DELAFE Y LAS FLORES AZULES, MRDJ, THE REQUESTERS, AMABLE
So Stay Tuned for the new report…

1. Calexico - "Two Silver Trees"Download: Calexico - "Two Silver Trees"With a brief, string-plucked melody that recalls the feeling of lucid dream, Calexico slowly develops cognizance by adding a subtle rumble of a drumbeat, accordion, and whispered vocals. The hushed atmosphere of the verses borders into Western-themed camp, but the orchestral-pop in the chorus is positively luminescent. Grade: B+2. Conor Oberst - "Danny Callahan"Download: Conor Oberst - "Danny Callahan"The slight swing in the beat helps give Conor Oberst's first solo effort a breezy, alt-country boogie that is able to charm so easily as to allow no depression to set in. (This despite the tragic subject in the narration). However, this is certainly familiar, both to fans of Bright Eyes and Bob Dylan.Grade: B-3. Cold War Kids - "Something is Not Right With Me"Download: Cold War Kids - "Something Is Not Right With Me"Finally, some truth in advertising in the music world. This track sounds like someone doing the ole' grab-twist-pull mechanism on Ben Folds. So how is it that my nuts hurt?Grade: D4. The Walkman - "In The New Year"Download: The Walkman - "In The New Year"The woozy balladry of The Walkmen's new song is the second in a row to hold a debt to Bob Dylan's radical snarl, but with any intellectual edges scrubbed off with a druggy guitar-fuzz. Reverb-heavy production touches provide an impeccable foundation, the song itself is merely competent. It never really begun, baby blue.Grade: C+5. Kings of Leon - "Crawl"Download: Kings of Leon -"Crawl"After teasing the audience with a hint of the avant-garde (the distorted bassline iis right out of Bjork's "Army of Me"), the Southern-Rock apologists quickly settle into familiar territory with Who-inspired 2-chord blast of power chords not unlike "The Seeker". Doesn't search high, not does it hit low. Turns out I don't need to ask Timothy Leary about shit. The Kings of Leon got him covered. Grade: B6. Lackthereof - "Last November"Download: Lackthereof - "Last November"To borrow from Eve 6--bet you didn't see that one comin--(the)Lackthreof leaves me...well, not empty inside. Just mildly indifferent, for the most part. Experimental collages of sound shouldn't be this ordinary.Grade: C7. Buffertlibre DJ - "Rewinded"Download: Buffetlibre Djs - "Rewinded"You mean I have to listen to all of this? And why am I not seeing Slimer yet? This is some bullshit. Not a bad interpolation of songs though. But Girl Talk is more imaginative.Grade: B8. Dr. Dog - "The Old Days"Download: Dr Dog - "The Old Days"""The Old Days" starts out with the easy-going vocals of reggae on top of a collage of melodious, orchestra psych-pop, before a honky-tonk breakdown and a supernova of sound eclipse the song's laid-back beginnings. This song is nothing if not breezy insouciance. Grade: B+ 9. Parts and Labor - "Nowheres Nigh"Download: Parts and Labor - "Nowheres Nigh"Taking the opportunity to evolve musically presented after drummer Christopher Weingarten's departure, the formerly excellent Brooklyn-based sonic scrap-artists opt for a less fractured, more structured approach. A turn to the conventional that was not necessary, with a melody that's poorly cribbed from the Bob Mould playbook.Grade: C10. Tricky - "Council Estate (Drums of Death Remix")Download: Tricky - "Council Estate (Drums Of Death Remix)"The remix of Tricky's first work in five years, trip-hop titan Tricky skitters with oscillating bleeps-and-bloops for an apocalyptic party jam. Not without merit, but I am more curious to hear the original version. Without it, one can't really appreciated the changes in the remix.Grade: B-

I know the blogosphere is already saturated with news of the new Kings of Leon song “Crawl” and the cool new teaser trailer, but I feel as if I would be doing myself, Logan, and the KOL a great injustice if I didn’t go ahead and mention it.
Logan and I both have been KOL fans since day one. I remember him giving me a copy of Youth & Young Manhood demanding I check it out immediately. I did and instantly fell in love with their sound. I also remember Logan and I, both sick with some type of sinus/cold thing, driving to Tulsa to catch them at Cain’s in front of Maybe 100 – 150 people. They kicked ass and despite our illness we both knew we had just witnessed something special. The next time we saw them was at the Diamond Ballroom in Oklahoma City and Logan was so stressed because he was blowing off some type of super important group project. In the end I think he will agree that it was worth it. The next time I saw them was at Cain’s. The show was sold out, but the crowd was filled with drunken frat boys. This was kind of a downer, but they still rocked the place. I also know for a fact that Logan saw them at SXSW ’07 because I got a late night phone call reminding me of how much they rock. In fact I think everyone at that show knew how much Logan was digging it.
Needless to say Logan and I have had some good times listening to KOL and are both looking forward to the new album. Only By the Night is scheduled for a September 23rd release date, but you can head over to their website and sign up to receive the new song ”Crawl” for free. If your’re lazy you can grab it below. However, you really should head over to their site to watch the teaser trailer.

Download: Kings of Leon - "Crawl"Though "Crawl", the first single from their upcoming album Only By The Night, begins with a distorted bassline similar to Bjork's "Army of One". However, with Kings of Leon being a capital-R Rawk band, the track settles into more conventional territory once the vocals begins. In fact, "Crawl" is not entirely dissimilar to the classic Who song "The Seeker". For those who've been searching low and high for a straightforward, but slightly off-kilter, rock song have found it. No need to ask Timothy Leary about shit. So if you complain once more...Listen to the song at the top of the post, then go over here to download it. It will only cost you your soul email address. Nothing of consequence, right?Only By The Night is out on September 23rd. Kings of Leon MySpace Page

I have a feeling there might be more KoL haters frequenting this music blog than supporters, but I chose to ignore my (perhaps unfounded) instinct and instead point out that the band has just released their first single from the upcoming Only By The Night LP. It's called "Crawl" and while it's not as melodically familiar or catchy as "Fans" or "Ragoo" (from last year's Because of the Times), it definitely sees the southern rock band reaching new shred territory. In other words, prepare your ears for an assault from an unlikely source.[MP3] Kings Of Leon - CrawlHere's a video of the band playing "Crawl" in front of almost 300,000 people at Rock Werchter 2008 »<object width="510" height="416"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6SMQL233_sE&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6SMQL233_sE&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="510" height="416"></embed></object>

As we reported a while ago, the brothers/cousin Followhill took a break from their regular nights of drinkin’, fightin’ and lynchin’ to head back into the studio to record the follow up to their bloated yet popular 2006 album Because of the Times, the spookily titled Only By The Night.
The Kings are getting in touch with their technologically advanced fanbase by releasing a first taste of the record, “Crawl”, as a free download on their official website. Personally, I find the act of crawling to be a far more enjoyable pastime than listening this drawling, fuzzy and ultimately boring number that never really gets off the ground. If you have reservations about leaving your email address for the free download (perhaps it’s really all a grand scheme to collect all of their groupies details?) we’ve posted it below for your downloading pleasure.

The first track from the new Kings Of Leon album, Only by the Night (Sept. 23rd), made its debut on the interwebs today. Although it's not the official single, "Crawl" is a standard rocker that serves as the first peak at the Followills' booze-and-pill-fueled fourth album featuring the group rocking ...

Kings of Leon have a new recording becoming available September 23rd titled Only By The Night. Here is the first available offering from the upcoming release titled “Crawl”. I for one, am curious as to which direction the band is going to head with the new recording. Because of the Times was a slick departure from earlier recordings, and one would wonder if Only By The Night might see a return to the southern rock roots with a dash of the new and improved Kings.

[photo from Roseland Ballroom, 6.7.07, click for review]Today the latest from Kings of Leon came across the wire. The band's upcoming album, "Only By the Night," is out September 23, and this is our first taste. I dig it, but I have a hard time finding anything from the Followill boys that I don't like. I'm really looking forward to hearing more from the new record, especially when I see them at All Points West in two weeks - Lord knows I loved them last time they came around. Really looking forward to that one. Take a listen for yourself, let me know what you think![mp3] Kings of Leon - "Crawl" (Only By the Night)

Kings Of Leon- Crawl (Link 2) (Link 3) or download from the band (preferably). Discuss: Kings Of Leon- Unstoppable? Kings Of Leon will creep up on you. Just when did they get this big? "This" being "walk-in-the-park Glasto headlining" big and "trotting out brilliant albums every year" big. I get the simultaneously wonderful and terrifying impression that nothing can stop this band... Most optimistic fans weren't expecting to hear from the band until 2009, at the earliest. And yet, information trickled out of the KOL camp that a new album, 'Only By The Night' is to be released in the US on September 22.Yesterday, NME broke the news that they would be doing an exclusive free download of a new album track 'Crawl' between the hours of 3-5 PM on Monday 28th July. And download I did. The album now feels within touching distance. You can head over to NME now (the download is still up).So, the verdict? These boys can do no wrong. 'Crawl' is dirty, grimy and sounds like a direct progression of their 'Because Of The Times' sessions. They riff on pop culture, with the repeated chorus of 'Walk away, walk away', and there is even enough time at the end for a fitting guitar solo (an element largely left out of their music... until now). In short, this song is nigh-on perfect, and once again, they appear to be moving onwards and upwards. The question is, will the Kings ever hit a wall? On the basis of this and the three preceding albums, I wouldn't bet on it.The album's first single is called 'Fri On Fire'. No news on the release yet, but a mid-August release woudl be the safe bet to allow the pre-album heat to build. The album can be pre-ordered via Amazon. The band are also embarking on a UK arena tour this Christmas:Brighton Centre (December 1)Nottingham Trent FM Arena (December 2)Newcastle Metro Arena (December 4)Sheffield Arena (December 5)Glasgow SECC (December 7)Liverpool Echo Arena (December 8)Birmingham NIA (December 10)London O2 Arena (December 11)Bournemouth BIC (December 14)Manchester Evening News Arena (December 16)Cardiff International Arena (December 17)Subscribe to updates here

The first track taken from the Southern-fried boys' upcoming release, September 23's Only By The Night, "Crawl" finds the band searching for bigger rock hooks than ever before, complete with all sorts of distortion and a never-quitting drum line. We have good feelings about this upcoming release, even if we've never really liked Kings Of Leon. Honest.
