September has little value to me beyond the start of football. The weather manages to retain the worst aspects of summer (NYC is 95°F today) as our lifestyles adjust to more focused, goal-driven tasks. Nothing wrong with responsibility, but I’d much prefer to be doing work when it is bitter cold outside. Showing up to [...]

The Black Angels at BV SXSW 2010 (more by Tim Griffin)
It's already been nailed down that The Black Angels are definitely on board for the super terrific ATP New York in Monticello this year (the last and final lineup was originally announced), as well as their jaunt with Black Mountain that will take them to Bowery Ballroom on November 3rd (tickets).
But besides those pair of unmissables, The Black Angels are also scheduled to play a secret show in NYC on 9/7, just days after that ATP appearance! The show is NOT open to the public, but we have 10 pairs of tickets available for giveaway! Details on how to win your way into the show (which will also have an open bar), and a free poster to go along with it (sorry you must be 21+ because of the open bar), are below.
All of the ridiculous touring and related hubub is directly related to Phosphene Dream, The Black Angels' new LP, due on 9/14 on Blue Horizon Records in 180 gram vinyl/CD/digital forms. Preorder it now.
Their tour-mates Black Mountain also have that NYC show at Knitting Factory coming up even sooner, August 30th to be exact. Tickets are still on sale. Grab an MP3 of Black Angels covering Black Mountain (which originally appeared on limited edition release a couple of years ago), above (along with a re-post of new songs from both of the bands' new albums).
More details on how to enter the contest, and some Black Angels video with all dates, below...

Black Mountain - The Hair SongSeptember mun bjóða okkur upp á ekki bara nýjar plötur frá Black Angels og Black Mountain heldur einnig The Walkmen, sem eru nú líklega ein af uppáhalds hjá Zúrmundi. Lisbon hefur lekið á netið talsvert að undanförnu en þrátt fyrir það þá mun ég styrkja þá heilshugar og huxanlega fjárfesta auk þess í vinyl útgáfu til viðbótar CD. Stuffið hljómar gríðargóðu.The Walkmen - JuvenilesSíðast en ekki síst. Les Savy Fav hefur alltaf verið schnilldarband. Nýja platan, Root For Ruin, er algjör eðall. Langt síðan að maður hefur heyrt í jafn hreinræktuðu og beisikk harðkjarna indie rokki sem eitthvað vit er í. Krafturinn og grúvið er óstöðvandi. Klárlega ein besta plata ársins til þessa. Hendi hér inn líka þessu ákaflega viðeigandi lagi fyrir mig, þar sem ég bý rétt hjá Silver Lake í LA. Mikill LA LA gaur þessi. Svo er Tim, söngvarinn ekkert nema flottur í lúkkinu.Les Savy Fav- Sleepless In Silver Lake

MP3: Black Mountain - The Hair SongBlack Mountain have described their forthcoming "Wilderness Heart" as their most metal and most folk record. While either of those (mostly the much salivated metal side) have yet to appear, opener "The Hair Song" is still some very, very solid shit. Can't wait to truly rock though!

As previously reported, the Black Angels' new album, Phosphene Dream, is out on September 14. The band will first head out on a European tour, then trek through the states in October & November with Canadian psychedelic rockers Black Mountain. Coincidentally, the Black Angels recently provided a cover of Black Mountain's "No Satisfaction."The Black Angels - "No Satisfaction" (Black Mountain)http://www.myspace.com/theblackangelsThe tour will come through Austin on November 19 at La Zona Rosa. Both have albums scheduled for release on September 14th. These two bands would be a fantastic pairing on tour together.

Sometimes we’ll get emails from people that describe bands as “meat and potatoes” rock, and we’re like WHAT IS THAT AND IS IT GOOD? Like, meat and potatoes can be amazing to eat sometimes, but usually when something that gets described that way it is secretly synonymous with being boring and/or a tired retread of [...]

The rocketing riffs and whirling keys heard on Black Mountain's breezy new single, 'The Hair Song,' took a while to flesh out, according to vocalist Amber Webber. "We tried the song a few different ways and nothing seemed to work," she tells Spinner. "We ditched it for a bit and then came back to it, and that's when it became not-so-minimal."
The second single and opening track from the Vancouver quartet's forthcoming album, 'Wilderness Heart,' (available Sept. 14) may have started out as a subdued folk affair, but fans now have plenty of driving chords and countrified flourishes to feast upon. "I think the rhythm section really carries the song," says Webber, who notes that once they band had gathered in the studio, the feel-good tune came together pretty quickly. "It was really fun and fast to record."
