The XX is one of my favourite bands and I missed their last show. Going to the show I was actually more excited to see JJ perform seeing as they are the new buzz band everyone is talking about. Well, the guy in the band looked like he was out of a gap commercial from 1999 and walked around just staring with his long hair. Yah the girl has an amazing voice but she was super lazy looking and put on one of the most terrible performances I have ever seen. Really hope that they get their shit together, seriously that guy is pretty much useless he even played the air guitar, a first from a guitarist on stage. Yah I was drunk and having a good time but they really REALLY disappointed me, with that being said My Way is still my favourite song right now.

I wrote about Nosaj Thing a couple weeks back with his sick ass remix of the XX’s islands, well he I wasn’t aware that he was also going to open up for them and shit man he tore it up. He puts on a crazy show, he did it entirely free hand and made some of the deepest beats I’ve ever heard.

The XX sound just like their album they are some talented people thats for sure. Their stuff is extremely minimal and chilled out so I wasn’t sure if they would put on an entertaining show. Their dj, perhaps the least celebrated of their band, didn’t fit their all black with silver chain ensemble helped mix things up a bit. The bass coming in from Fantasy, my least favourite on the album, was out of this world. They didn’t change any of their songs too much but the subtle differences made their live performance unexpectedly energetic. The XX is best heard live that is certain.

Happy Birthday
Hello, I’m Jen. I’m on holiday at SXSW in Austin Texas watching bands, drinking beer and lounging by the rooftop pool. I’ve decided to take a few minutes from my busy showbiz schedule everyday to write some words on here about a band you might like.
The reality is it’s 1pm and I’m sat in my musty hotel room trying to rid myself of a hangover before today’s drinking begins. There are about 20 day parties and 135 bands on my list for the afternoon and I have no idea what to even try and make. So instead here’s a band I saw yesterday.
They’re called Happy Birthday. There are three of them in the band, and they come from Brattleboro in Vermont, which is actually a real place and not made up (as I had assumed). Here’s a video of them playing….

Kyle from Happy Birthday also plays in Witch and it turns out he saw me at ATP last Christmas which is very strange. It’s not the reason I’m writing about them here though, oh no. Happy Birthday have that kicked back live swirl of Girls but with a slacker snarl and an ambush of tempo changes. They’re signed to Sup Pop over here and about to tour with Vivian Girls.
I saw them at the True Panther showcase yesterday evening. Also playing were Magic Kids, Harlem and The Smith Westerns. To be honest, it was difficult singling out one band to write about here. Hunx and his Punx also played…. They were not so good.
My choice was made even harder later when I managed to jump the (huge) queue for the IAMSOUND party (thanks David) and stumble into what could be one of the best line ups of my little life. Fools Gold, jj, Sleigh Bells and SALEM. MEN played too but we won’t dwell on the negatives.
jj were breathtaking, although Elin seemed quite nervous. Joakim, the guy who writes all the music spent the entire set stood on stage next to her with his hands in his pockets as she sang over a backing track. It was all very strange.
I have more videos but the internet here is slooooooow so you’re going to have to wait to see a drag queen introducing SALEM I’m afraid.

I keep saying that the water in sweden is magic, and JJ you are just furthering my belief. I know a post was just done on the new buzz band but this song really caught my attention and has been stuck on repeat every since so I had to show it some love.
Ohh where to start, the use of rap and hip hop elements combined with this dreary vocals you guys got going on is pure magic. When the song takes a turn for a slower a more fairy tale like sound comes through and its probably my favourite part of the song and I hope is more reflective in the album that everyone and their moms best friends mailman is waiting to drop.
Well JJ we have a date on April 4th, no matter what I will find a way to get to that show. That show will be without a doubt be the show to be at this spring and I know the more I hear from these guys the more excited I get.

Swedish label Sincerely Yours — who released JJ’s fantastic jj nº 2 — is giving away jj’s latest virtual single for free.
The first song, “Let Go” is gorgeous and will appear on JJ’s upcoming Secretly Canadian album, jj nº 3, out March 9th. The second one kicks off with that creepy Charles Manson monologue we heard in “5 minuter med JJ” and includes a verse by Lil Wayne, courtesy of his Trina’s track “Don’t Trip“. “My Way” is going to be a huge jam throughout my summer. I really hope it makes the album.
