Kicking off this week’s new album releases on Groundhog’s Day, we have Toro Y Moi’s Causers of This, which is a very worthy debut amongst the ever-growing amount of bands coming down the pipe of similar ilk.
Also garnering a lot of buzz is Midlake’s The Courage of Others, the follow-up to to 2006’s The Trials of Van Occupanther. I’ve yet to hear this one myself, but I did enjoy their previous album to some extent, so I’m definitely looking forward to checking it out soon.
The Soft Pack (formerly The Muslims) and The Album Leaf round out the rest of the recommended releases, with the surprise of the week coming in the form of The Brunettes and their latest titled Paper Dolls. I only say this because I had no idea they were even working on a new record, let alone having it come out this week. If you enjoy listening to some very sweet, sweet pop songs, than I’m sure you’ll find some enjoyment out of it.
Looking at these releases, you pretty much have a nice sampling of a wide arrange of different genres of music. From post-rock to indiepop, it’s all here to be discovered.

This week features some unusual new releases with Texan electro folk band Midlake stealing the spotlight. The former high school jazz band kids diverge from the 70’s-esque, psych-pop sound of their 2006 breakout album, The Trials of Van Occupanter, and adopt a more organic, haunted vibe with The Courage of Others (they’re playing Portland’s Wonder Ballroom 3/6 and Bellingham’s Nightlife Lounge on 3/7). Mope-punk band The Soft Pack (who performedlive on KEXP on 1/23) dropped their original controversial name, The Muslims, and released their debut self-titled record (third career album) under their new and improved moniker. Don’t worry, they still rock the English new waver stuck in sunny SoCal attitude and sound.
Malian band Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba’s I Speak Fula is the first release for the new world music label Next Ambiance, a joint project of Sub Pop and KEXP DJ Jon Kertzer host of “The Best Ambiance” (every Monday 6-9 p.m.). Between Kouyate’s award-winning record, Segu Blue, and his band’s phenomal mix of Afro-beat and blues, Kertzer couldn’t have picked a better outfit to unveil his new label (Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba are playing The Triple Door 3/16). The Album Leaf celebrate their 10-year anniversary with the commending A Chorus of Storytellers (playing Neumos 2/6), and Toro Y Moi put out the beatastic Causers of This (playing Chop Suey w/ The Ruby Suns 4/8).
Other worth mentioning albums are Pierced Arrows‘ Descending Shadows, The Brunettes‘ Paper Dolls, and yes, Lil Wayne’s Rebirth! Take a look at Largehearted Boy’s list for more information and additional new releases before hitting up your local record shop.

Who: The Heligoats from Bellingham, Wash.
What: Today is one of those days where there’s just too much good music out there. From the new album Goodness Gracious (out today, Greyday Records), this Chris Otepka (formerly of Troubled Hubble) in his tenth year with The Heligoats. Always using the moniker as a separate songwriting outlet, even while touring and recording with other full-time well-acclaimed bands, he’s steadily created a record ever year since the beginning. Impressive and a great song below.
Song: Fishsticks. Reminds me of Mumford and Sons, meets Wintersleep, meets Bishop Allen.

There’s nothing like taking a whole bunch of cod, pulverizing them into paste, forming them into strips and flash-freezing them for quick microwaving in school cafeterias everywhere.
In that spirit, here’s a track off Heligoats’s new album, Goodness Gracious, coming out Feb. 2 on Grey Day Records.

The Heligoats. Genre: Psychedelic / 2-step / Indie From: Washington, United States What is it with goats? Is there a higher being who decides that bands who saddle themselves with a goat like name are destined to always remind you of The Mountain Goats? Ok admittedly this is based on the fact that there is the odd similarity between The Heligoats and the Mountain Goats and therefore my research probably wouldn't stand up to a scientific peer review! Especially as further research pulls up a Phili hip hop quartet performing under the name the Goats. All of which is a rather bizzare and convoluted way to bring The Heligoats to your attention, a band who quietly entered their 10th year of existence in 2009. Chris Otepka (formerly of Troubled Hubble) always used the moniker as a separate songwriting outlet, even while touring and recording with his other full-time bands. Since the first Heligoats release in 1999 the prolific Otepka has released at least one record per year despite this effectively being an extra curricular activity.Supplemented by Mike Mergenthaler, David James and Steven Mitchell, the Heligoats are releasing a new album of songs written and performed solo by Chris over the past two years. The new album Goodness Gracious will be released in February and would be a good way to spend the Christmas money from your aunt.
