Top 10: Non-New York Bands To Watch In 2010 (Sort Of)

Last week we brought you the Top 10: New York Bands To Watch In 2010 and everyone seemed to love the list so we thought this week we'd expand it to the rest of the world. Of course there are tons of bands left off this list so feel free to chime in about other bands we should be keeping out eyes on in the comments section. Oh, and really this list only includes 9 bands from outside of New York, we totally brain farted and left a band off from last week's list so we threw them onto this one! Hope you guys enjoy!10. Freddie Gibbs; People seem to keep touting the whole "hip-hop is dead" theme and really if you're looking at things nothing could be farther from the truth. There are still a slew of artists out there that are pushing the game, last year we had Drake bursting onto the scene doing his thing, year before that Lil' Wayne finally made it big. The point is there's always someone ready to come along and push the rap world into another direction, this year that voice is definitely Freddie Gibbs, an MC hailing from the home of the Jacksons (Gary, Indiana!) and pushing some truly thugged up rhymes with some steady beats to go along with it. Take a listen, if not you'll be hearing it on all the radio channels soon enough.Freddie Gibbs - "Crushin' Feelin's"9. Delphic; Delphic is already obscenely popular in their native England, like many of the artists on this list, but they stand a good shot at making the leap to worldwide recognition with the debut album Acolyte. The record is built on huge beats and sounds all weaved together to form some of the most compelling dance rock we've heard since The Rapture. These guys are poised to be pretty huge might as well jump on the bandwagon now, though it's filling up pretty quickly already.Delphic - "Doubt"8. Pearl Harbor; Over the past few years there have been more than a few teenaged bands getting buzzed about because of their age and their abilities to copy their parents' record collections, but really most of that stuff was regurgitated crap. Pearl Harbor on the other hand may be young, but they have a style and sound that is all their own. They reside somewhere between chillwave and bedroom pop, making casual songs that sound a bit hazy but have a lot of feeling and vulnerability behind them. It's sweet stuff and unlike all the other teen bands we don't just like them because of the novelty of it.Pearl Harbor - "Luv Goon"7. Warpaint; By the end of last year Warpaint was right on the cusp of becoming the next big indie band so we figure 2010 has to be the year that launches them into the next stratosphere of fame and hopefully fortune. Their music deserves it too, with the same sort of fragile harmonies and melodies that made Dirty Projectors the breakout band of 2009. The sounds are a little different from what Dirty Projectors gave us though, but the delicate pop aesthetic behind both bands is definitely present. We're pretty sure 2010 is gonna be huge for these ladies.Warpaint - "Beetles"6. Class Actress; So Class Actress are actually from Brooklyn. We totally brain farted and left them off our list last week so we thought we'd make it up to them by including them on this list. We know that may be considered cheating but if you had heard their forthcoming EP already you'd be saying the same sort of kind things about them. The electro-pop found on Journal Of Ardency is immediate, pulling you in with the lovely sound of Elizabeth Harper's voice and the steady beats that turn this from standard coffee house fare to dance floor worthy greatness. We're very fond of this local three piece and can't believe we glaringly left them off the New York list! Hope this makes up for it!Class Actress - "Let Me Take You Out"5. Golden Girls; For a good portion of the aughts if you wanted to hear the next big band you would just look north to Canada and find the next big band coming from there to latch onto. Over the past few years though the pipeline has gotten a little clogged up with bands that were taking the Canadian indie pop sound a little too seriously. Sure you've still got a band like Fucked Up who certainly came from a different world, but there were a few too many Arcade Fire/Broken Social Scene/etc. copycats for our liking. Looks like Canada is finally branching out again as the Golden Girls sound nothing like any of those bands, instead Rose, Blanche, and Sophia are making electronic punks sounds that would break the actual Golden Girls' hips in half! Hell these sounds might get us dancing enough to break our own hips so look out ER!Golden Girls - "Amateur Teen Sex Attics"4. We Have Band; Please forgive if by the end of this post you no longer want to hear any of the electro-pop coming from the UK these days! There's just so much of it and so much of it is really freakin' good. The guys of We Have Band are definitely one of the finest examples cranking out funky beats and addictive choruses that will have dance floors all over the world sweaty and hot all year long. Reminiscent of how great Hot Chip were when they first burst onto the scene, We Have Band truly crank it out on everything we've heard from them so far. Check it out!We Have Band - "You Came Out"3. Marina & the Diamonds; Obsession is a very strong word but over the past few weeks I have become completely obsessed with the sounds of Marina & the Diamonds. It started with the release of the tune "Mowgli's Road", a track that wound up at #30 on my year end singles list but would be much, much higher right now. Her debut album The Family Jewels is out in February and based on the other songs found on her MySpace this is going to be quite the sensation. Think Lady Gaga without the insane costumes.Marina & the Diamonds - "Hollywood"2. Local Natives; It took us a few extra months to come around to Local Natives and their self-released debut Gorilla Manor but now that we have we can't imagine our lives without them in it! Thankfully Frenchkiss has continued its trend of re-releasing albums from successful indie rock bands (Passion Pit, The Antlers, Freelance Whales, etc.) so we can consider them to be breaking out in 2010 even more than they already did last year. Cheating? Maybe a little bit, but their songs make us deliriously ecstatic so we don't mind blurring the line a bit on this one.Local Natives - "World News"1. Ellie Goulding; Last year pop music all but bowed before the presence of Lady Gaga, this year she'll have a bit more company at the top. We already talked about Marina & the Diamonds, but her closest competition will almost definitely be England's Ellie Goulding. The gorgeous, wonderfully talented singer first got attention thanks to her insanely catchy "Under the Sheets" (which garnered #10 on our year end list), but this year when her debut full length Lights hits there is little doubt that she will be propelled to international stardom. We're completely sold on her and dying to hear this full length like you wouldn't believe!Ellie Goulding - "Wish I Stayed"Ellie Goulding - "Under the Sheets"<script type="text/javascript"> sr_adspace_id = 4549407; sr_adspace_width = 728; sr_adspace_height = 90; sr_adspace_type = "graphic"; sr_ad_new_window = true; </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ad.afy11.net/srad.js?azId=4549407"> </script>

Best of '09: Top 50 Sinlges (#1 - 10)

At the beginning of the year I unleashed an article unlike anything I had ever written for this site before. Titled, "The 9's Have It: Historical Reasoning Why 2009 Will Be A Great Year for Music", I detailed the history of the last year of the decade and its overall affect on the pop culture we would experience well into the next decade. Well 2009 hasn't really disappointed at all, at least when it comes to the music. Sure, we don't know exactly where we'll be 10-years from now but if you look at all the fantastic records and singles that were released this year there's a good chance some of this will influence the next ten years of music. Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Jay-Z, Grizzly Bear, Drake, Lady Gaga, all have had there moment in the sun, shared with countless other acts vying for your attention and recessed funds, all of them pushed their respective genres into new, exciting directions, and all of them stand a good chance of lasting quite a bit longer. Here we're gonna look at the best singles of the year, next week it'll be the albums, but I really think we just witnessed a brilliant year in this form of art and we'll wind up talking about it for a long time to come.Download the ZIP #1 - 10!Top Singles #11 - 20Top Singles #21 - 30Top Singles #31 - 40Top Singles #41 - 5010. Ellie Goulding - "Under the Sheets" | If Lady Gag was the omnipresent face of pop music this year, Ellie Goulding was the under the radar, up-and-coming star of the year. Granted, Gaga had more time to establish herself, but after hearing this amazing tune her reign on the pop charts may not last long. This tune has quickly become a favorite of mine and I think with her stunning looks and incredible ability to turn a simple pop song into a dance anthem it won't be long before you fall in love with her too.9. Dirty Projectors & David Byrne - "Knotty Pine" | Compilation albums often offer some pretty tasty nuggets to help complete your collections of certain artist, but this tune off of Dark Was the Night might just be the finest original tune to come off a compilation record in ages. With the hyped up Dirty Projectors mixing and mingling with David Byrne it would be difficult not to go wrong, but these guys didn't just mail it in for the one off tune they truly wrote one of the best songs of the year and made it shine all for a very worthy charity.8. Clipse (feat. Kanye West) - "Kinda Like A Big Deal" | If you ever needed proof of how poorly the big labels are being run look no further than the two highest ranking hip-hop tracks that aren't from Jay-Z. Both Big Boi and the Clipse have been tormented by their labels pushing back their records and keeping them from capitalizing on some of the best music coming out of the genre. This single was released in April, the album that it's found on was just released last week. There's something not right about that, but at least we were able to enjoy this track and Kanye's 2nd best verse of the year for 8-months of the year!7. The Antlers - "Bear" | Last year we named "Two" the best tune of the year, this year the rest of the world caught up with us in our love of The Antlers. Propelled by the Pitchfork "Best New Music" nod The Antlers caught fire and this tune was a big reason for all the success. It is of course an emotional, captivating song that is defined by the startling way Peter Silberman croaks out the song of a surprise pregnancy and the horrors that come with it. It's touching, poignant, and beautiful all at the same time.6. Grizzly Bear - "Two Weeks" | After a couple of very successful and very promising albums Grizzly Bear made it all work for them this year with the release of Veckatimest. The record is a shining example of the power of indie pop, with its lush harmonies and beautiful melodies. No song serves more of that than "Two Weeks" a song that has dominated music fan's play lists since the moment it hit the web way back when. This song does not lose anything over time, still as beautiful and memorable as it was so many months ago. I'm pretty sure when we look back on 2009 twenty to thirty years from now this tune will still be recognized as one of the best.5. Animal Collective - "My Girls" | If Animal Collective are indeed becoming the new Grateful Dead then this is the song that all the AC-heads will wind up losing their shit over for years to come. "My Girls" rolls up everything we have come to love about Animal Collective, the pop harmonies, the lovely synth sounds and samples, the flowing, psychedelic nature of their music, into one big blanket and adds a little more pop to the mix for good nature. It's the best song they've ever written and that's saying a lot.4. Jay-Z (feat. Kanye West & Rihanna) - "Run This Town" | The best hip-hop track of the year is definitely "Run This Town". Featuring the two best rappers in the world right now and the hot, smooth voiced R&B singer of the moment, "Run This Town" is the anthem that defines the tone of The Blueprint 3. Boastful, confident, cocky, it shows a man that knows everything about himself, knows his strengths and knows how to capitalize on it at every turn. Jay-Z is at the top of his game throughout this track and Kanye stands shoulder to shoulder with his mentor on his verse. To top it all off there is nothing about Rihanna's chorus that isn't catchy and memorable. "Run This Town" is the best hip-hop had to offer this year and just about any other year.3. Phoenix - "1901" | "1901" took a band that had achieved a level of modest success and has launched them into the stratosphere of superstardom! The song is a critical and commercial success on all fronts, and why wouldn't it be. Right from the opening moments of this song it drags you inside of the music and will not let you go, not that you would ever want to be after hearing it. Now we can hear it every 30-seconds on TV, radio, the internet, anywhere we go we are inundated by Phoenix's smash hit, and we still have not gotten tired of it in the least bit. How's that for staying power.2. Atlas Sound (feat. Noah Lennox) - "Walkabout" | If I were making a general best of list and taking other people's opinions into making the list these top two songs would not be here. Instead I'm making MY year end lists and these are the two songs that affected me the most. Bradford Cox has been a prolific songwriter the last few years, releasing tons of material as Atlas Sound or Deerhunter. There's been some crap mixed in there, but for the most part he has hit the mark the majority of the time with some truly fantastic songs. None of those hold a torch to "Walkabout", the absolute prized gem of his sophomore release Logos. Yes, it is truly helped along by the amazing harmonies laid down by Animal Collective's Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox), but the layers of sound that Bradford put down for him to croon over are nothing to shake a finger at. Put together it makes one of the most inviting sounds Bradford has ever crafted and stands as a giant leap forward for him in creating subtle sonic structures.1. Girls - "Lust for Life" | With the possible exception of The Antlers, there is no song that logged more plays for me this year than Girls' "Lust for Life". But to be fair, I've had The Antlers for a lot longer than I've had girls. This song is an honest look into one man's perspective on the world. He hasn't had the easiest of lives, he has some basic desires, and he genuinely doesn't know how to attain even the most basic of his goals, but he wants it so bad. The lyrics are perfect for the time we are in and the state many of us indie music lovers find ourselves in, beaten back by unrealistic expectations and the sins of our fathers, we are forced to scrap by whatever way we can. The message may be a bit somber and melancholy, but the music gives us hope, the peppy lilt for the singing, the fast strummed guitar, the driving beat, all point to the possibility of hope. So "Maybe if I really try with all my heart, then I can make a brand new start, in love with you". It really sums up a lot of things for me in a rollercoaster 2009 and serves as the current soundtrack to my life. And that is why it's the Best Single of 2009!<script type="text/javascript"> sr_adspace_id = 4549407; sr_adspace_width = 728; sr_adspace_height = 90; sr_adspace_type = "graphic"; sr_ad_new_window = true; </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ad.afy11.net/srad.js?azId=4549407"> </script>

Buzzworthy??? Or Not???

Who: Ellie GouldingLocation: London, Englandelbo.ws Ranking: #41Thoughts: For a few minutes I'm going to have to forget that Ellie Goulding is absolutely gorgeous and just focus on her music without some sort of infatuated bias. It's gonna be hard. Listening to Goulding's tunes is like finding the perfect blending of a slew of British pop stars. Lily Allen, Kate Nash, even a bit of Micachu all seem to have seeped into her musical style, yet it also sounds fairly fresh if a bit familiar from time to time. That should be thought of as a good thing, her influences come through brightly but somehow Ellie Goulding still manages to shine on her own. Her voice glows throughout the first few songs we've heard from her and after listening to her MySpace page for the past few days I have to say I am genuinely excited to hear more from her. Now I know I'm not usually the biggest pop lover in the world, but these gentle tunes have something to them and yeah she's pretty easy on the eyes as well. Oops, guess I failed at ignoring the beauty for more than a few minutes but I think you guys get the point.Verdict: Buzzworthy!!!Listen: Ellie Goulding - "Under the Sheets"Ellie Goulding - "Starry Eyed"Passion Pit - "Sleepyhead (Starsmith Remix feat. Ellie Goulding – Under the Sheets

Oh Ellie. If all pop music was like this, we’d all have to find something else to complain about. She’s got one of the most fascinating voices I’ve heard in such long time, it’s sweet as can be but there’s just so much muscle to it. Under the Sheets is the latest Ellie Goulding track that I’ve had on repeat since it showed up on the Neon Gold blog this week, and as they say: This shit is for real. Stunningly produced by fellow Brit, Starsmith, there will be remixes on the way from Jakwob, Baby Monster, Theophilus London and others and if you haven’t seen it already, there’s an adorable teaser clip of the track here. The single will be available from November 9, at the Neon Gold Store. Ellie Goulding – Under The Sheets - bec

Ellie Goulding – Under the Sheets

I’ve been waiting for a decent rip of this before it went up on the blog. It finally arrived via the glittering Neon Gold who are releasing this tune on November 9th. Much like was suggested by her Myspace covers and the brilliant ‘Starry Eyed’, it’s brilliant pop music which has subtle electronica and real radio-pop flourishes under its skin. That seems to be becoming the trademark for Starsmith who produced the tune. And I haven’t even mentioned, Ms. Goulding herself who’s following Marina into the heady netherworld of new pop princesses who are also undeniably talented. Goulding has an unusual type of voice which is a little bit naive and a little bit sexy at the same time. This is a tune. Ellie Goulding – Under the Sheets [Buy 7" - Pure Groove | Neon Gold] There are remixes coming from Theophilus London, Baby Monster and Jakwob, who did this KILLER remix of ‘Starry Eyes’ earlier in the year: Ellie Goulding – Starry Eyed (Jakwob remix) If you’re wondering what she sounds like live, I think this is from one of her first live shows last month: <object width="480" height="404"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zj8Erq0LO2A&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;feature=player_profilepage&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zj8Erq0LO2A&amp;rel=0&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;feature=player_profilepage&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="480" height="404"></embed></object> Related PostsNialler9 Weekly ChartWeekend Jukebox: the remix editionIntroducing: Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding, “Under the Sheets” MP3

A couple months ago Mark Ronson hosted Ellie Goulding on Authentic Shit, his show on East Village Radio which is slotted right after ours. Already fans of her sweet, quavering voice from Jakwob’s remix of her lilting “Starry Eyed,” we stuck around to watch her strum an acoustic in the tiny studio to an audience [...]

Under the Sheets

Following up her “Starry Eyed” surprise earlier this year, Ellie Goulding is set to drop her first single release on Neon Gold in early November. Killer vocals complimented by the production of Starsmith, with further remixing to be done by the likes of Jakwob -who’s initial remix left an imprint in my library that won’t be soon forgotten- as well works by Baby Monster and Theophilus London, Goulding’s work will without a doubt be making some serious waves here very soon.
