Basia Bulat

I’ve been listening to this Basia Bulat track over and over for about a week now. I just love it. I find all her songs to be quite lovely – her vocals are beautiful – but I prefer the more uptempo tracks to her slower ones. Basia Bulat @ Soundscapes (In-Store Performance)

Falling under the category of "sure thing" is the irresistible talents of Basia Bulat, a person that I've seen perform several times now, yet who still manages to leave me in awe every time. In promotion of her latest release entitled Heart Of My Own she's been playing a number of shows lately at slightly larger venues, but prior to this in-store at Soundscapes I would have to say that my favourite time seeing her was when she played another in-store at Criminal Records a couple of years ago. I just find that her brand of humble acoustic folk is well suited for the intimate setting of a local record store, and it doesn't get much more intimate than the slight surroundings of Soundscapes. As anticipated, the crowds didn't take very long to build and, as usual, I was happy that I had the sense to get there a little bit earlier. It ended up being a packed house that certainly wasn't as uncomfortably full as I had seen the place before, but it was still a pretty healthy crowd indeed. There were a couple of other factors that contributed to the intimate vibe of the evening. First of all, we all sat on the floor, which is cozy and stuff yet once again the dreaded foot falling asleep situation that haunted me only a mere month ago at the An Horse in-store show reared its ugly head again (although it should be noted that this was way more comfortable than that one was.) Secondly, when Basia took her place she requested that only her autoharp be plugged in as she felt that audio enhancement wasn't really necessary for such a small venue. A gutsy move for sure, but one that paid off nicely as the whole set felt that it was only a fireplace away from being as warm and personal a show as it could be. She focused mainly on newer material, which I'll admit I haven't really taken the time to listen to yet, but the personal unfamiliarity to the songs had no effect on my overall enjoyment. If anything, hearing her voice in this natural setting only made me twice as eager to check it out as soon as possible. The unmic'd situation really drove home just how powerful her voice actually is, as there didn't seem to be a single person who remained unaffected by her entrancing vibrato. The highlight of the set for me was her closing number which was an acapella rendition of an old gospel number that she sang sans instrument, only using her handclaps and footstomps as percussion. It made for a humorous moment when her foot stomping made a small amount of merchandise fall to the floor, which had her remark "Neil Young is going to kill me", which was greeted by great laughter from all in attendance. It must've been one of his books or CD's that fell. Still, it's that unforced human quality that endears so many people to her both as an artist and as a person. As she heads stateside to continue touring the new material, she'll no doubt continue to make new fans and friends along the way, and it'll be interesting to watch her popularity continue to rise, as it no doubt will.Photos: My pictures of Basia Bulat @ Soundscapes are on flickr.Myspace: Basia BulatDownload: Gold Rush mp3Video: Highlights from the performance are at Now MagazineVideo: Basia Bulat was also interviewed in the basement at Soundscapes the day of the show on AuxTV.Other stuff:You've probably heard about this already, but Broken Social Scene have returned with an epic new song called World Sick which can be downloaded for free on their website. (You'll need to give them your email address). The song is awesome, as expected, and it will be featured on their upcoming album which well be called Forgiveness Rock Record, as is scheduled to be out in May. [Myspace: Broken Social Scene]Daniel Hales and the Frost Heaves have a new video out for the song Shepherd of Lost Shopping Carts. [Myspace: Daniel Hales and the Frost Heaves]Dutch indie rock band Bettie Serveert is back with an excellent new album called Pharmacy of Love and a track entitled Deny All is available for free download. [Myspace: Bettie Serveert][Via Chart Attack] It looks like Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon are going to be recording a "trio" album with Yoko Ono which, I can't believe I'm saying this, sounds like it could be pretty interesting. [Myspaces: Sonic Youth; Yoko Ono]And lastly, it seems that this is the season for in-store events, with some pretty interesting ones coming up. Zeus will be playing Soundscapes on March 6th at 6pm. Kurt Vile is going to be at Criminal Records on February 26th at 6:30pm. And during CMW on March 13th, Criminal Records has got an awesome three-fer featuring Aidan Knight (5pm), Dan Mangan (6pm) and Hollerado (7pm). Yay free music!

The Weekly Graboid

Sorry for not having the Graboid up last week, but I’ve included those releases (Spoon, Surfer Blood, Editors) in with the already incredibly amount of great releases that are available this week. So much good amazing stuff to choose from, that one would be hard-pressed to decide where to spend their hard-earned cash. Two albums that I’m extremely excited about and will surely be picking up at some point this week are Beach House’s awe-inspiring third album Teen Dream and The Magnetic Fields’ Realism. I haven’t had a chance to listen to all of Realism yet (which many have dubbed the yin to Distortion’s (2008) yang, but Teen Dream is so good it hurts. Early candidate for album of the year? Too early for that kind of talk, but it is sure to be in the discussion when that time comes. It is definitely that good, people. Also worth mentioning are a number of great releases, too numerous to single out any one in particular, from the likes of Basia Bulat, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Boy Genius, and Four Tet. As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have missed. What releases are you most excited about? Out This Week 1/26

Music fanatics everywhere can breathe once again as this week’s new releases promise only the most excellent albums to come in 2010. Prolific folk artist Stephin Merritt has created yet another masterwork with Magnetic Field’s new album, Realism. Releasing 19 albums in 19 years under several get-ups, Realism is as inspirational and instrumentally seductive as Merritt’s latter works, staying true to his pessimistic outlook on love while shifting away from Magnetic Field’s signature abrasive sound. Complete with the flugelhorn, the harpsichord, children’s music and even the author Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) on accordion and backing vocals, Realism is a must-have for any indie folk collection. Dream pop duo Beach House released their breathtaking third album and debut Sub Pop record, Teen Dream. The whimsical “Norway” and the wandering “Silver Soul” are the star tracks of the nighttime soundtrack, and guarantee to transport any listener to another world. Retribution Gospel Choir focus on big guitars and pop hooks with their second album 2. Unlike their debut, 2 separates the three-piece band from singer/guitarist Alan Sparhawk and bassist Steve Garrington’s former slowcore project, Low, giving them a well-deserved identity of their own. San Fransisco sextet Citay released their riff heavy, jam monster, Dream Get Together. Influenced by momentous 70s sound, the soft-loud album is epic and energetic, refreshing from much of today’s dismal, downer melodies. Toronto punkers Fucked Up released a double-disc compilation of 25 of their hardest-to-find and uncollected 7″ and 12″ tracks with Couple Tracks: Singles 2002 - 2008, giving mosh pit lovers everywhere more of an excuse to thrash. British producer/multi-instrumentalist Kieran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet) explodes into the new year with his fresh and hypnotic fifth studio album There Is Love In You (”Love Cry” was featured as Monday’s Song of the Day). And, Welsh band Los Campesinos! ripen from their giddy pop beginnings with their third album, Romance Is Boring, saturated with fuzzed electric guitar, and catchy strings and horns. All in all, this is a week of musical awesomeness with power labels generously releasing multiple albums. Sub Pop cranked out AFGCT’s self-titled album, along with those of Beach House and Retribution Gospel Choir. Matador released their various artist salute to the city of Austin, Texas with Casual Victim Pile: Austin 2010 along with Fucked Up’s album. Drag City put out several records, including Major Star’s Return to Form, Scout Niblett’s The Calcination of Scout Niblett and The Red Krayola’s Five American Portraits. Even Thrill Jockey got multiple album action with Chicago Underground Duo’s Boca Negra and Robert A.A. Lowe & Rose Lazar’s Eclipses. Don’t forget to check out Largehearted Boy’s list for even more outstanding records before heading out to your local record shop. New Releases: 1/26/2010

January has been a pretty amazing month for new releases up to this point, and this week shows no indication of slowing down. I can personally recommend the new Beach House album, Teen Dream. It’s might be one of the most gorgeous albums I’ve heard in a long time. I can also recommend the new Charlotte Gainsbourg and Los Campesinos albums. They are both very good and have probably cemented themselves onto a lot of people’s year end lists. Wow it’s January and I’m already talking about year end lists. I think I may have a problem. Anyways there isa lot of stuff that I’m looking forward to hearing for the first time on this list too. Should be a busy week of listening to great music. You may have noticed but I’ve also included a poll so you can vote on your most anticipated new release of the week. Check out the new releases, album art, streams MP3’s and vote after the jump… Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll. Tin Woman

There's not a whole lot I can tell you about Basia Bulat, but honestly I almost like it that way. I first heard of her in 2006 when she independently released a self-titled EP that caught my attention as well as the attention of many other music lovers around the world. That secured her a deal with Rough Trade, where she then released her first full length album, "Oh, My Darling" in 2008. That record was strong enough to place her on the short list for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize, which is a big deal in that it recognizes significant musical contributions from up-and-coming Canadian artists. So it's been a couple years since then, and Basia is finally back with her sophmore album, "Heart of My Own," which is out on Tuesday. In terms of sound, Basia Bulat occupies the female singer-songwriter label pretty well. On "Oh, My Darling," she there was a healthy amount of acoustic guitar, autoharp and piano/organ, all pretty much leading people to say she pulled largely from the realm of folk, though some of the more energetic and catchy arrangements showed she also had very strong pop leanings as well. You may have heard some of her songs in a commercial or two, most recently "Before I Knew" was used in a Subaru ad. To put things a little more bluntly, Basia writes good and compelling songs, though they may not feel like the most original things in the world. Her singing voice reminds me a little bit of Natalie Merchant, and she's working on a similar level to such notable persons as Feist, Maria Taylor, Tiny Vipers and Blue Roses. Hell, if you like, you can even say there's a little bit of recent hype benefactor tUnE-yArDs in Basia's music, though Basia actually has a recording studio to work with rather than a laptop microphone. With "Heart of My Own," Basia Bulat does what comes natural and works towards taking her sound to the next level. That means stripping away the quieter, more insular shell she had created for herself and breaking out in a bigger way. There are more instruments, and the arrangements just sound bigger in general. In the most basic sense, she's taken some of the better things from her debut and expanded upon them. Of course not every song on "Heart of My Own" features violin and horn sections, but those things do come into play more often and dominate the mix more than they have on Basia's prior material. Thankfully the more intimate, acoustic/autoharp-dominant songs still make a few appearances across the record as well, bringing a healthy balance to the record. Perhaps the most noticeable change between this album and her last one is how much Basia has advanced when it comes to her lyrics. She wasn't a poor songwriter before, but there was some immaturity and lack of real depth on her last album. She's much improved on "Heart of My Own," and that's what ultimately helps lift this record above her debut. If you've been following Basia Bulat since her last record, you'll find plenty of reasons to keep loving her on "Heart of My Own". For those of you who've not yet dipped your toes into her musical waters, you might find plenty to like on this new album. Then again, given that Basia's music sounds like so many other female singer-songwriters out there, you might regard this album as just another drop in an already full bucket. What does separate her from the pack this time around are a handful of exceptionally catchy songs, blended with some stripped bare emotional moments - all of it being very lyrically sound. So if you're so inclined, please give "Heart of My Own" a chance - I think you'll find it to be one of the more engaging and entertaining records released so far this year.Basia Bulat- Go On Basia Bulat- Gold Rush Buy "Heart of My Own" from Amazon

mp3 Mixtape: Friday Mixtape LXXXV (Holiday Edition!)

It’s pretty incredible to think that the holiday season is here. It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in 2009, a year, which as we eventually discovered, would be beyond our wildest imaginations. From the scorching musical brilliance of Bonnaroo to the incredible weekend that was Lollapalooza; from our interviews with Tom Jones, Slayer, Passion Pit, Pavement, Ben Kweller, and Ms. Consequence of Sound herself, Regina Spektor, to debates over the metal heads, 311, and Albums of the Decade; from sleepless nights waiting for Coachella’s lineup to drop to caffeine filled mornings, 2009 was an incredible year for us. And in reality, we couldn’t have done it without a wonderful staff of contributors and a dedicated and passionate readership. It is this that we are most thankful for, beyond any Christmas gift or New Years Celebration. So, thank you… and Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and a very Happy New Years! Basia Bulat :: ‘Heart Of My Own’

Color me embarrassed for just now finding out that Canadian singer-songwriter Basia Bulat will soon be releasing her follow-up to 2007’s immensely enjoyable debut, Oh, My Darling. It’s an album that continues to send shivers down my spine whenever I happen to listen to it. Everything just comes together so well, and that voice…oh that voice. Not enough words can describe how lovely it is. The forthcoming album titled Heart Of My Own, is set to be released on January 26th (which is looking to be an incredible month for releases) and finds the talented musician dealing with new challenges, while living up to the promise of her debut. According to an interview with JAM, she had the following to say about writing songs for the new record: “This was more difficult because I didn’t want this to be like the first album. For one thing, it’s louder and more confident. We even added an electric Fender to the mix. I like making challenges for myself. It takes a while to know what a song is about because it has a life of its own,” she explains. “It takes a while for their meaning to develop. I need an audience.” A new song from Heart Of My Own called “Gold Rush” was recently been made available, and I have to say that this is such an excellent song which definitely raises my anticipation level for this album. It’s just bursting at the seams with energy that hits you with this sudden rush of excitement. Seriously folks, I can’t wait to hear this one. MP3: Basia Bulat :: “Gold Rush” Related posts:Basia Bulat – Oh, My DarlingBasia Bulat album giveaway + tour datesDeVotchka/Basia Bulat @ Variety Playhouse, AtlantaNew EP titled ‘Higher Than the Stars’ from The Pains of Being Pure at HeartThe Pains of Being Pure at Heart :: “Young Adult Friction”

Basia Bulat – Gold Rush

Polaroid by Radio KPitchfork’s review labels “Gold Rush” as “more a fans-only treat than a welcome mat.” But this is my first taste of Basia Bulat, and it works just fine as a welcome mat for me.“Gold Rush” is filled with building strings, an unstoppable rolling percussion, and some phenomenal singing, both from Bulat and from the chorus that ends up backing her toward the track’s fantastic climax. As Luis says, it’s “massive.” Bulat’s wailing and the complex, layered instrumentation adds up to a song that just feels BIG.Again, I have to go back to the Pitchfork review, which claims that “if you didn’t listen to her before, now’s not really a better time to start.” I couldn’t disagree more. After one listen of “Gold Rush,” I instantly wanted to hear more from Basia- and you will too.MP3: Basia Bulat – Gold RushBasia Bulat’s Heart of My Own is out 01/25/10 on Rough Trade. Basia Bulat returns with Heart Of My Own

Looking to followup the success 2007’s Oh, My Darling, Canadian signer/songwriter Basia Bulat will return early next year with her second full-length effort. Titled Heart Of My Own, the 12-track, Howard Bilerman produced effort promises to pick up where its predecessor left off. “From gracefully sad to hopeful and joyous, she exudes an earthy, organic quality to the music’s mystic, Phil Spector-like backbone,” the issued press release declares. Oh, My Darling will hit stores on January 26, 2010 via Rough Trade Records. Stream the album’s first single, “Gold Rush”, below. Check Out: “Gold Rush” Heart Of My Own Tracklist: 01. Go On 02. Basia Bulat, New Album Coming, Record Preview Show at The Bell House

Basia Bulat DOWNLOAD: “Gold Rush” – Basia Bulat Canadian chanteuse and Bumpershine favourite Basia Bulat is making her first NYC appearance in a long while on Oct 7 at The Bell House (Buy Tickets). At Wednesday night’s show, she’ll be showcasing songs from her forthcoming album, Heart Of My Own, set for a January 26, 2010 release on Rough Trade. The Bell House is her first and last stop US stop before heading out on a small European tour, I’d imagine we’ll see some more North American tour dates come January. Rough Trade Records is excited to announce the forthcoming album from Basia Bulat. Entitled Heart Of My Own, the album will be in stores on January 26, 2010. This album is the follow up to 2007’s Oh, My Darling which generated a groundswell of support from both the press and fans alike. NPR called the first single “In The Night” “one of 2008’s great singles” and Spin.com said, “Oh, My Darling’s lucky thirteen tracks showcase Bulat’s soothing, throaty voice and her dead-on aptitude for poignant, classic songwriting. From gracefully sad to hopeful and joyous, she exudes an earthy, organic quality to the music’s mystic, Phil Spector-like backbone.” Heart of My Own was recorded with [former Arcade Fire drummer] Howard Bilerman (who was at control panel for Oh, My Darling as well) and nearly all the songs were written while on the road: traveling between cities, crossing the Canadian prairies, searching for a place to stop in the Nevada desert, trailing through the Smoky Mountains, standing in the bright dusk of a summer night in the Yukon. More Basia Bulat tour dates, Heart Of My Own cover art and track listing after the jump. Free and legal MP3 from Basia Bulat (charming shot of rustic exuberance)

"Gold Rush" - Basia Bulat Eager youth and venerable tradition is a compelling combination, and a perpetual argument against sourpusses who rise with foolish predictability, in every generation, to proclaim that good music ended at some lamented moment in the receding past. Good music never stops arriving; good listening frequently grinds to a halt, however. "Gold Rush" is a particularly charming amalgam of the old and the new. The old registers in the exuberant, rustic vibe embodied by a stringed managerie that includes fiddles and Bulat's signature autoharp; the new is all in the song's energy: in Bulat's freewheeling vocals, in the galloping percussion, and maybe best of all in her innate sense of drama. This young Canadian knows just when to pull back and when to let loose--listen to how well, for instance, the song's rollicking momentum is set up by the opening section, with its deliberate series of staccato fiddle chords; check out, also, how she clears space for those out-of-the-blue but abruptly perfect harmony vocals in the bridge (1:42). And she wraps up this spirited rollercoaster ride in a nifty three and a half minutes. "Gold Rush" is the first song made available from Bulat's upcoming Heart Of My Own, her second album, scheduled for release in January on Rough Trade/Beggars. MP3 via the Beggars Group.
