Out the Other's Favorite Songs of 2009 - #20-#16

#20 - Here We Go Magic - "Tunnelvision" (from Here We Go Magic)Kicking off this list with a smooth start is "Tunnelvision," from Here We Go Magic's self-titled debut. It was nice to see Luke Temple take this interesting turn in 2009, and I wish I had the chance to see the band when they swung through Nashville this year (though I did see them at SXSW). This song babbles along with a ripply surface like a mid-paced mountain stream, and may have been my first taste of the layered sounds I would fall in love with in 2009. #19 - Fol Chen - "Winter, That's All" (from Part I: John Shade, Your Future's Made)I can honestly say I don't remember anything else that appeared on this Fol Chen album, but I do remember latching on to "Winter, That's All" immediately when I was running over that specific week's releases for the radio show. Then I promptly forgot the song, and lamented that fact a few weeks ago when I started assembling the list - a song can't be a favorite if I didn't listen to it that much. Fortunately, it's been in such regular rotation this December that it made this countdown after all.#18 - Animal Collective - "My Girls" (from Merriweather Post Pavilion)Before 2009, I probably would have been more interested in the optical illusion-y cover of Animal Collective's new album rather than the music within. But the Panda Bear-ified Merriweather Post Pavilion ("Panda Bear-ified" is a term that could be applied to a lot of what 2009 had to offer) was more accessible than anything by Animal Collective that I had sampled to date, and the placement of "My Girls" on a mix a friend made solidified my opinion that it was one of the best songs of the year, even though it appears lower on my list.#17 - Bear in Heaven - "Wholehearted Mess" (from Beast Rest Forth Mouth)I was more pumped about seeing Bear in Heaven at this year's Next Big Nashville than possibly the whole rest of the festival (aside from Phosphorescent, maybe) and I nearly wore out my advance copy of Beast Rest Forth Mouth before the band even rolled into town. They put on a fantastic show and turned out to be a great bunch of guys, and I can't wait to see them in 2010 as well.#16 - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - "Home" (from Up From Below)"Home" was my "Young Folks" of 2009 - not because of the whistling, but because I fell head over heels for it immediately and then kinda got sick of it. Still, I loved this song enough to warrant a spot on this countdown, and I know it sounds so classic that I'm going to be listening to it for years to come.

[Listmas 2009] The Top 50 Albums of the Year #40-31

Day number two of my Top 50 Albums of 2009 countdown is here, and along with that comes another set of excellent releases you may or may not have heard of prior to now. Today's 10 albums are pretty well all over the chart from a genre standpoint, and I didn't always hear a lot about them other places, so hopefully this will get them more attention. That being said, let's continue on with Listmas, and my favorite albums of the year, #40-31!40. Fanfarlo - Reservoir (Download: Luna)The gentlemen in Fanfarlo seem to be quite smart, both from a musical perspective and a business one. Business-wise, they held a deal from February through July selling high quality digital copies of their album "Reservoir" for a mere $1. Tragically for me, I had already purchased a copy at full price and therefore couldn't take advantage, but if you happened to have heard about it and spent that single dollar, what you got in return was worth far more than that small investment. Hell, "Reservoir" was even worth my full priced payment. In what might also be considered a very smart move on their part as well, the band's sound marks a great mixture of indie stalwarts - singer Simon Balthazar sounds a whole lot like Zach Condon of Beirut, and the lush and joyously overblown melodies will have you thinking of Arcade Fire. While Fanfarlo may not be exactly as good as those two groups, the extremely careful instrumental arrangements along with an incredible sensitivity towards writing a bombastic hook is what drives this band out of the fray and onto year-end lists. This record is a delight to listen to, and if you've not yet heard it (as I suspect many still haven't), you may want to get on it now.39. Wilco - Wilco (The Album)For a band that went from alt-country to pop music to experimental pop music to flat out experimental prog rock over the course of 5 albums, I was always under the impression that Wilco was the kind of band to always keep pushing themselves to new levels and testing the waters to see what worked and what didn't. Which is why their last album "Sky Blue Sky" was such a disappointment to me - it felt largely like a band resting on their laurels and retreading on places they had been before. That didn't exactly position me with high hopes for "Wilco (The Album)", but thankfully I wound up surprised and in fact somewhat relieved. Granted, this record doesn't mark more boundary pushing or blatant experimentation, but it does distill the Chicago legends down to what I'd call their core. There are songs here representing every little nook and cranny of their storied careers, from folksy alt-country to sweeping ballads (with Feist!) to fun and upbeat pop songs to completely out-there noise rock jam sessions. All of these things combined are why I love Wilco, and this is the album that reminded me of that. The band made the right choice in self-titling this record, because everything about it defines who they were and currently are.38. M. Ward - Hold Time (Download: Never Had Nobody Like You ft. Zooey Deschanel)Up until about October of this year, I only moderately liked M. Ward. The guy's been responsible for so many great things in my life the past few years you'd think I'd count him among my favorite singer-songwriters, but something has always held me back from giving him some of my supply of high respect. Between 2006 and 2007 I'd put on his album "Post-War" and skip through to my favorite tracks, loving a select few and ignoring the rest. Things started to change when Ward joined up with Zooey Deschanel for the She & Him project, which turned out an album that I loved very much and was among my favorites last year. But for that, Ward played side man to Deschanel's dreamy vocals and a fair number of cover tunes. When Ward's next solo record "Hold Time" came out in February, I gave it a few listens, decided I liked it a fair amount, but the number of times I returned to it throughout the year became less and less as the months dragged on. It was Ward's solo performance of "One Hundred Million Years" during a Monsters of Folk show that changed everything. Don't ask me exactly what it was, but hearing the guy play the complicated melody to that song while holding rhythm by smacking the acoustic guitar at the same time wasn't just great, it was mind-blowing. My respect for M. Ward went through the roof, and I started giving "Hold Time" lots more listens, which is how it clawed its way up to this solid position on my list.37. Vivian Girls - Everything Goes Wrong (Download: Can't Get Over You)Vivian Girls made a huge splash with their self-titled debut album last year. It ranked highly among my favorites of '08, though I'm saddened to report that the lo-fi movement that brought these ladies to prominence quickly faded after that. Not their fault, but it was smart of them to turn out another album right away. Whereas their self-titled debut established this trio of ladies as a fun, creative band that tends to not take shit from anybody, "Everything Goes Wrong" saw them mature into a darker, yet equally strong territory. The growing pains a band typically experiences on their second album didn't present themselves, as it seems Vivian Girls already know exactly where their next sonic evolution is going to come from. Longer songs and more heartbreak also contributed greatly to the advancement of their sound, and though the motto of "go quickly and leave a memorable chorus" may have worked for them in the past, it's not so much the case here. Nothing's an instant memory and the album doesn't fly by as fast, but what it lacks in whirlwind pop tunes it makes up for in pure technical songcraft. The instruments are played better and with more precision. The lyrics go deeper and are much more striking. This may not have an instant likeability quality to it, but instead you're rewarded over multiple listens, discovering new bits and pieces each time and allowing the songs to slowly seep into your subconscious.36. The Mountain Goats - The Life of the World to Come (Download: Genesis 3:23)John Darnielle may not be the most spiritually devoted guy in the world, but he's nothing if not a scholar when it comes to spiritual things. Case in point, while he's maintained that he doesn't always believe the things the Bible says, he has learned quite a few lessons from The Good Book, which he finally puts to good use on "The Life of the World to Come". Each track is named after a Bible verse, and while the lyrics don't always have an exact translation of the Biblical passage, the stories told within the songs are all reflections of what that particular verse means to Darnielle. Sometimes he tells a story and other times he works to convey particular emotions, but all of it winds up very interesting and enjoyable no matter what you happen to believe in. Among the dramatically large pantheon of Mountain Goats albums (he's got 16 of them, not counting EPs), this album may not rank entirely within the top 5, but it's probably number 6 or 7, which basically means its still very, very good. The arrangements here are sparse and often focus solely on acoustic guitar or piano, but what it lacks in full band sheen it more than makes up for thanks to the emotive vocal performance Darnielle puts forth. Heartbreaking yet never not entertaining, "The Life of the World to Come" is one of the most engaging records I heard all year.35. Ida Maria - Fortress Round My HeartThere are track marks on her arm, her hair is a mess, and she's passed out in the street with a bottle of liquor in her hand. No, this isn't Amy Winehouse, but rather an approximation of the character that Ida Maria creates for herself on her debut album "Fortress Round My Heart". Now I can't exactly differentiate between what's lyrically real and what's fiction on this record, but the way she belts out these songs, between yelling in anger and practically sobbing in sorrow, it says to me there's a lot of emotion put into these songs. These raw and honest confessions are also unlike so many other female artists out there (save for maybe Lily Allen), and that's what helps set Ida Maria apart from other, potentially similar female artists. I can also honestly say that "Fortress Round My Heart" rocks pretty hard, and there's an excessive number of great hooks to get stuck in your head while smacking you in the face with a ton of bricks. One listen to the song "Oh My God" and you'll be humming it for the rest of the day. But broken down to its essentials, the incredible way Ida Maria is able to deliver honest and affecting rock and roll while wrapping it up in a neat little catchy package makes this one of the strongest debuts of 2009.34. Volcano Choir - Unmap (Download: Island, IS)Not meaning to simplify what Volcano Choir are doing on "Unmap," but the most basic and best way for me to describe the album is to say that it's simply Bon Iver mashed together with Collections of Colonies of Bees. They collaborated on this project, and you get the minimalist and eclectic arrangements of Collections of Colonies of Bees married with Justin Vernon's voice and guitar on occasion. Aside from the song "Island, IS", this this is pretty weird on the whole, though I tend to be all for artists pushing the proverbial bar in new and exciting directions. But tt takes some serious time and patience to uncover the magic and wonder contained within this record, though once you finally do unlock them it becomes a much easier 35 minute journey to go on. This isn't as great or likeable as Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago" was, nor does it feel as good as the last Collections of Colonies of Bees record "Birds", but this is still a highly interesting side jaunt for both artists. I wouldn't mind hearing more from Volcano Choir, provided that nobody gives up their day jobs in their original bands.33. Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic (Download: Fangela)Luke Temple is an interesting dude who makes interesting music, and his new project Here We Go Magic may just be the most interesting thing he's done to date. What I love about this self-titled debut, among other things, is the lo-fi bedroom pop aesthetic that is often adopted while at the same time maintaining something of an in-studio sound quality. It's all very carefully arranged so that sometimes instruments sound like they were recorded in an echoey room far away from a microphone, while others are cramped inside tight quarters right up next to the mic. It's the difference between demo and a finalized mix, which is why the blending of the two often makes the album sound only halfway produced. That of course was done with every intention, and it works as a distinctive touch. Also making this album stand out is its constant genre shifts, from Afro-pop to tribal freak folk to crazy instrumentals of noise, you're never fully sure what's coming your way next, and that's part of the thrill. The instrumentals may not be the strongest suit on the album, but everything else is pretty much dynamite, especially the addictive songs "Fangela" and "Tunnelvision".32. Blue Roses - Blue Roses (Download: I Am Leaving)A good female singer-songwriter project can be hard to come by. There are so many of them out there, but so few actually worth your time and hard-earned money. When Laura Groves came along with her debut album under the name Blue Roses, I treated it with the skepticism of one who's heard and been disappointed by so many others before. Then a funny thing happened - she melted the ice around my heart to give me something meaningful and just plain lovely to talk about. Her self-titled debut album was primarily recorded solo in various houses, and most of the songs feature only an acoustic guitar or piano matched with her delicate singing voice. The lyrics are highly touching, and mostly about love and relationships, with the underlying theme being that you should base your actions on emotion and intuition rather than what might seem to be most logical. That's the sort of mantra I can abide by, even if the results are less than sunny (which, as we learn from this album, can happen on occasion). But instrumentally speaking, most of these songs sound lovely even without words, and a song like "Cover Your Tracks" is somehow sparse while packing loads of ideas into it at the same time. If you're a fan of classic 60's and 70's female folk singers, Blue Roses should strike right within your comfort zone. It certainly did a great job wowing me.31. Bear In Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Download: Wholehearted Mess)Bear In Heaven are the sort of band that eccentric music lovers can't wait to latch onto, mostly because it feels like they're trying to do something different but within the relative constraints of a pop song structure. In fact, part of what makes these guys so compelling is their ability to resist falling into lock-step with any particular genre of music. I don't use the word "indefinable" often, but with an album like "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" it tends to apply. You get blends of electro-pop and psychedelia with bits of prog-rock and tribal drumming - sometimes in the course of a single song. Yet the choruses still manage to be completely enveloping and remarkably addictive, like a warm blanket on a cold night that you just don't want to give up. Equally exciting is how even though you sometimes want to blast these songs from the rooftops in exultation, there's still a distinctive insular element to them that gives them a far more private and personal touch. Basically this album is comprised of songs that are as big as all outdoors, but are still emotionally bare enough to give you a moment of pause. For such a tactful approach towards such a different-sounding record, Bear In Heaven have earned a very healthy dose of my respect.PREVIOUSLY: Top 50 Albums of 2009 #50-41TOMORROW: Top Albums #30-21!

Hometapes is the sum of its parts. As a gift to all of you who comprise the equation that equals Hometapes, we crafted a week of special music from Hometapes artists. We’re calling it The Eight Days of Hometapes, as that sounds holidayish and/or like a bad movie. Over the next week, we’ll be unveiling a new song daily via our website and its digital tentacles. Six records, including five on vinyl, grew the long-and-lovingly-built catalog to near thirty-five releases. 2009 saw the release of Megafaun's sophomore album, Gather, Form and Fly, as well as nearly constant touring from the band. Crowds throughout North America and Europe experienced the intimacy, power, and beauty of Megafaun live as the group toured with friends and former bandmates such as Bon Iver, Bowerbirds, and The Dodos. “Megafaun’s roots are familiar; the bloom is uniquely theirs” - David Fricke, Rolling Stone(4 Stars) Download: Megafaun - "Kaufman's Ballad" Thomas Wincek, known for his work in Volcano Choir and Collections of Colonies of Bees, joined the Hometapes family with the limited-edition colored vinyl release of Segni, an EP byAll Tiny Creatures. ATC also joined labelmates The Caribbean for a 2009 tour. Hometapes and CYNE answered the call with their first-ever mailorder-exclusive multimedia package: a CD (with a US-exclusive tracklisting), a t-shirt, and two stickers -- all designed by Cody Hudson. The album, a collection of tracks by the Gainesville hip hop masters, hearkens back to their landmark album Time Being and continues to turn heads since its soft summer release. Hometapes plans a wide release of Water For Mars in 2010. "Twenty-one cuts of CYNE in peak form: what could be better?" - Ron Schepper, Textura Download: CYNE -- "Pretty Apollo" Hometapes squeezed in one more release for 2009, a commemoration of the year on the classic format that their name honors: a cassette tape. The limited run is being dropped out of the Hometapes santa sack over the next couple weeks. Watch your mailbox or feel free to request a copy here: info@home-tapes.com. Team Clermont 2009 Records

Bear In Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Hometapes) “Take out the earbuds and let it fill a space: This is music that’s bigger than your iPod— music you’ll want to feel all around you.” - Eric Harvey, Pitchfork "Best New Music" (8.4) MP3: Bear In Heaven - "Wholehearted Mess" Capybara - Try Brother (The Record Machine) "I'll tell you this: I had never heard of Capybara before, but "The Wimp" is totally the soundtrack to my day now." - Gil Kaufman, MTV MP3: Capybara - "The Wimp" Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - Vs. Children (Tomlab) "If Stephin Merritt is the Stephen Foster of DIY synthpop, deconstructing romance with droll precision, Ashworth might be Bert Williams, swaying around the beat to simultaneously emphasize and unpack his melancholy." - Village Voice MP3: Casiotone For The Painfully Alone - "Optimist vs. The Silent Alarm (When The Saints Go Marching In)" Casper & The Cookies - Modern Silence (HHBTM) "This song [Little King] has quickly become one of my favorite CATC jams, packed full of Big Star, a dash of the Replacements and a heaping helping of XTC." - You Ain't No Picasso MP3: Casper & The Cookies - "Little King" Circulatory System - Signal Morning (Cloud Recordings) "It took nearly eight years to make, but Circulatory System's breathtakingly inventive new album, Signal Morning, justifies the wait." - Robin Hilton, NPR MP3: Circulatory System - "Overjoyed" The Flying Change - Pain Is A Reliable Signal (SR) "Jacobs' album is by turns defiant and exhausted, jittery and delicately accepting, its restrained but carefully considered arrangements wrapped around shards of surrealistic shards of lyricism." - Jennifer Kelly, Blurt MP3: The Flying Change - "Dirty White Coats" Jookabox - Dead Zone Boys (Asthmatic Kitty) "From paranormal themes to the genius/madness precipice, this one-man experimental collection bewitches and beguiles on repeated listen." - MOJO MP3: Jookabox - "You Cried Me" Simon Joyner - Out Into The Snow (Team Love) "...the nine-minute opener "The Drunken Boat" is a masterful drifter's narrative that moves seamlessly in its middle from understated country backing to dark chamber folk dominated by Laraine Kaizer's intricate string arrangement-- the point where the song makes the full transition is perhaps the biggest surprise in his whole discography, and the song's final third is pretty breathtaking, getting progressively lusher until Joyner is left behind by the violins as they spiral off into silence." - Joe Tangari, Pitchfork MP3: Simon Joyner - "The Drunken Boat" Lord Cut-Glass - Lord Cut-Glass (Chemikal Underground) "Woodward communicates such a strong sense of creative freedom — waltzes give way to mariachi stomps, brass, accordion and strings jostle for space, wry, spat-out lyrics contrast with rococo-folk settings, and songs such as Even Jesus Couldn’t Love You, You Know and Holy F*** are at once heartbreaking and vicious — that, in his case, the term “indie” here reasserts itself as a hallmark of quality rather than the insult (think “landfill indie”) it has increasingly become." - Dan Cairns, London Times (4 Stars) MP3: Lord Cut-Glass - "Even Jesus Couldn't Love You" Marmoset - Tea Tornado (Joyful Noise Recordings) "...what you're most likely to notice are the sunny, folky guitars and the crisp melodies, which sound a little like something Syd Barrett might've written for early Yo La Tengo. But as on past releases there's a surly, cynical edge to the lyrics, which infects the pretty songs with a hint of toxic malaise..." - Monica Kendrick, The Chicago Reader MP3: Marmoset - "Peach Cobbler" Megafaun - Gather, Form & Fly (Hometapes) “Megafaun’s roots are familiar; the bloom is uniquely theirs” - David Fricke, Rolling Stone (4 Stars) MP3: Megafaun - "Kaufman's Ballad" Malcolm Middleton - Waxing Gibbous (Chemikal Underground) "'Waxing gibbous' refers to a moon that's almost full, and Middleton here surely approaches full brilliance." -MOJO (4 Stars) MP3: Malcolm Middleton - "Carry Me" The Phantom Band - Checkmate Savage (Chemikal Underground) "Seriously, if Checkmate Savage doesn’t make you want to sail the high seas in the company of buccaneers while drinking your weight in spiced rum then I don’t know what on earth will." - Coke Machine Glow (89%) MP3: The Phantom Band - "Folk Song Oblivion" Pride Parade - Dose (SR) "Take two pieces Pixies and one piece Drive Like Jehu and you’ve got Pride Parade, a hyperkenetic Athens band big on brawn and bellow. Vocalist Andrew Prater hollers like he’s being eletrocuted — his bug-eyed shouting powers these filthy bruisers." - J. Edward Keyes, Rolling Stone MP3: Pride Parade - "If You See Her, Say Hello" Slaraffenland - We're On Your Side (Hometapes) "There is a sublime incipience, a sense that something wonderful is coming, in the way these tunes drive and strive and push to their conclusion." - Jennifer Kelly, Blurt MP3: Slaraffenland - "Hunting" Venice Is Sinking - AZAR (One Percent Press) "...AZAR finds Venice Is Sinking expanding on the orchestral, ambient, pop that initially caught my ear invoking the mellower side of Yo La Tengo/Mojave 3." - Justin Gage, Aquarium Drunkard MP3: Venice Is Sinking - "Ryan's Song" WWW.MUZORAMA.COM

Bear In Heaven כמובן. Bear In Heaven – Beast In Peace Bear In Heaven – Wholehearted Mess Bear In Heaven – Lovesick Teenagers Bear in Heaven - Bärenkeule in Sauerkraut

Bear in Heaven, “Wholehearted Mess” MP3

This song is indeed a wholehearted mess—sounding earnest and heartbursting, turbulent and chaotic, like a passionate but doomed relationship. Best advice: listen to the mad whorls of guitar while you look at their website looking back at you, and see if you can see through to the center of the universe. Bear in Heaven just [...]

Relaxing the Jaw

The band Bear In Heaven have gotten a fair amount of press recently, all surrounding their new album "Beast Rest Forth Mouth," which arrived in stores today. Well, I'm expecting the hype storm to only grow as more and more people begin to catch on to this record. Bear In Heaven are the sort of band that eccentric music lovers can't wait to latch onto, mostly because it feels like they're trying to do something different but within the relative constraints of a pop song structure. In other words, they're odd enough to be appreciated, but thanks to some relatively friendly hooks and decent musicianship, they're able to hold the attention of some listeners whose sonic palette may not be so "refined".Part of what makes this sound so attractive has to do with Bear In Heaven's somewhat unique blend of electro-pop and psychedelia. The guitars often swirl and make apt use of the space between the heavy synths and propulsive drumming. The vocals tend to be on the echoey side, which only adds to the trippy vibe of many of the songs. What I find most interesting about "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" though is how the songs cycle from the more blatant and fun rave-ups to the intensely dark, almost nightmareish stomps. One second they're close to a marriage between Of Montreal and Animal Collective, and the next they're sounding like estranged cousins of The Knife. And despite what could be interpreted as Jekyll and Hyde tendencies, somehow all these sound collages mesh together quite nicely to form what's ultimately a great record. My personal problem with "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" is less with the record as a whole and more with the ever-evolving culture of hype recently. Most assuredly, Bear In Heaven are going to wind up with a lot of new fans as a result of this album. The question is whether or not that will be because they earn or deserve that attention, or because this album just "sounds" like it should be great? That is to say, this record has plenty of hallmarks of recent highly praised albums, so does that automatically give Bear In Heaven an easier way to a good review, or will they get raves because it "seems like the right thing to do"? To be clear, I'm not in any way suggesting that "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" is a poor album, or at least poorer than I may have described in the paragraphs above. It's very good and worth your time and money. But when you start hearing people raving and calling this album immediately among the best released this year, I hope you'll take a step backwards and not blindly accept what's being sold to you.To bring this whole thing back around, I like "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" a whole lot, but wouldn't go so far as to say I LOVE it. The drumming reminds me a lot of Can, which is a very positive thing, and the synths tend to be top notch as well. My main concern is with the overall number of hooks, which seem to be absent from a large portion of the album. Granted, I'm not expecting every song to be memorable and stick in my head, and these songs are different enough where they don't necessarily require an addictive chorus, but I do think a couple more catchy tracks would do this album wonders. Don't let that stop you from checking this record out though, because at the very least it's an interesting listen with multiple layers on most tracks that reveal new things to you over multiple listens. There are some very talented guys in Bear In Heaven, and while "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" may not be amazingly mindblowing, something tells me they've got very bright futures ahead of themselves. Keep an eye on this band, they may be doing some truly big things over the next few years.Bear In Heaven- Wholehearted MessBear In Heaven- Lovesick TeenagersBuy "Beast Rest Forth Mouth" from Amazon

I really dug their self titled debut from a couple of years ago - very moody, very New Order-ish. Bear In Heaven

Brooklyn's psychedelic Bear In Heaven are sexy post-rockers, maybe even indie-krautrockers with a Tears For Fears crush in disguise. In a strange way, this record reminds me of a cross between the Head's '77 & Fear of Music. Their new album Beast Rest Forth Mouth out on Home Tapes Records is filled with big melodies, percussion, surging electronics and songs that sound like nothing else out now.Lovesick Teenagers - Bear In HeavenWhole Heartedness - Bear In Heaven

Next Big Nashville 09 Friday Recap

Friday night confronted me with one of those scheduling dilemmas that Next Big Nashville seems to torture you with every year. Do I head down to The Rutledge to catch an increasingly rare appearance by Venus Hum, or head to Exit/In to see my absolute favorite local artist, Cortney Tidwell. Normally scarcity would win out over favoritism, but since I was meeting friends for The Black Angels headlining set, it meant spending the night on Elliston. That also meant I would miss Lylas at The Anchor later that night, but the lineup at Exit/In was so strong it was hard to complain.Bear In Heaven kicked off the evening with a set of new wave inspired psychedelia, or maybe it was psychedelia inspired new wave. You could tell the moment you walked in the room they were a Brooklyn band, but you also knew right away that they were pretty damn good. They did suffer from what turned out to be a recurring problem for Exit/In bands over the weekend... vocals being absolutely buried in the mix. The sound at Nashville's grandaddy of rock clubs is usually spot on, so I don't know what caused the sporadic issues over the weekend. Next up was Cortney Tidwell, who luckily didn't suffer from the same problem. I've written about her a lot on here over the years, and her set Friday night did nothing to diminish her spot as my fave local. Pulling heavily from the recently released Boys, her set built in intensity until the thundering climax of "17 Horses," which literally gave me goosebumps. How the girl doesn't have a US record label is surely one of life's great mysteries.Between sets we made a quick run across the street to catch the tail end of Twin Tigers set. The Scene described them last week as "...like The Fiery Furnaces playing from the bottom of a gloomy, reverbed-out U2 cave." The two songs we did hear were enough to make us wish we had gotten to see more of it. Luckily we'll get the chance, as the band will be returning to Nashville to play the Basement next month. We'll definitely be delving more into them before then. Back across the street, we caught Disappears, who were dripping with both reverb and sweat.I got to see the Black Angels play at the Exit/In last year, so I had a pretty good idea what to expect. And even though they were missing the light show and video projector they had on their last trek through town, they still put on a hell of a show. Opening with "You On the Run," their 75 minute set made us feel like it was 1969 all over again. Their droning version of psychedelic rock is like Altamont's answer to the Summer of Love... dark and foreboding, with a hint of menace. The fact that the Exit/In was running forty-five minutes behind schedule all night meant we didn't make it across the street to catch Eureka Gold before they were finished, but there was still another night of rock and roll to be had... The Weekly Graboid

Not quite the stellar lineup of releases this week, but there are still some great records to be had with The Flaming Lips’ latest, Embryonic leading the pack. Also not to be completely overshadowed are releases from Thao Nguyen, Neon Indian, Imaad Wasif, Grant-Lee Phillips, and Fanfarlo who’s debut finally get a proper US release after being available digitally for what feels like forever. Out This Week 10/13

Fans who were excited to hear the new songs during The Flaming Lips‘ spectacle of a live show this summer can now hear the official versions as their latest, Embryonic, hits stores in a deluxe edition this week, including a fur box set! (Why didn’t Blitzen Trapper think of that?): Springing forth also this week are new progeny from KEXP favorites like Grant-Lee Phillips, Forro in the Dark, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, We All Have Hooks for Hands, The Heavy, and the long-awaited and excellent sophomore release from Engineers. Interesting debuts arise this week from The Temper Trap and Neon Indian as well as Bad Lieutenant, not the full frontal Harvey Keitel-fronted ultra-violent movie (though it’s the spark of inception for it), but the new project of New Order’s Bernard Sumner. Check out the full list from Largehearted Boy. Oh, and if it’s immaculate births you’re into, the Bob Dylan Christmas album is indeed a reality and can be yours now. New Bear In Heaven - "Lovesick Teenagers"

After the recent deaths of '80s musical movie icons John Hughes and Patrick Swayze, an ebulliently downcast and darkly triumphant song that reminds us lovesick teenagers "don't ever die / they will live forever" sounds like the anthem of '09. It's meant metaphorically -- you have that teenager in you "even when you're too old / and you think you know more" -- but that doesn't take away the track's power. It's the work of the Jon Philpot-fronted Brooklyn (via Georgia and Alabama) quartet Bear In Heaven and feels instantly familiar, not just because you might be reminded of Yeasayer or Suckers (or the Bee Gees). "Lovesick Teenagers" is one of those rare songs that feels fully formed even when you're still absorbing for the first time.Continue reading New Bear In Heaven - "Lovesick Teenagers"...

Bear In Heaven – Wholehearted Mess

When I hear a band described as “prog-rock” or that’s generally a surefire turnoff. But as with all submissions to TSOI, I’ll give everything a listen. This track submitted from Bear In Heaven’s forthcoming “Beast Rest Forth Mouth” was interesting enough that I deemed the record deserved a full download and I’m glad I did. I’m having a hard time describing the record short of it fitting in nicely in the era of late-’80s/early-’90s 4AD greatness. Look for their sophomore release on Hometapes on October 13, with this song being released as a limited edition 12″ September 8th. Download: Bear In Heaven – Wholehearted Mess

Bear In Heaven

ARTIST / BAND: Bear in Heaven MP3s: "Wholehearted Mess" ALBUM: Beast Rest Forth Mouth FILE UNDER: Psychedelic / Minimalist / Idol LABEL: HomeTapes INFO: Bear in Heaven started out as Jon Philpot, alone, in a studio, after hours, in Atlanta Georgia. Then he moved to New York and it was him, all alone, in his room, unemployed, trying to figure out how to make music in his bedroom and get a job. Then comes along James Elliott, a friend of friends from Table of the Elements. They became friends, drank many drinks and went to Europe with Presocratics. James started The Social Registry with Rich Zerbo, left TSR and made music under the name Ateleia. Around that same time, Sadek Bazarra moved to New York with his company GHAVA. read more from the source... WWW.MUZORAMA.COM

Just Like Heaven

Bear In HeavenGenre: Psychedelic / Minimalist / Idol From: Brooklyn, New York, United StatesA seed planted in the Southern US years ago (all members hail from Georgia or Alabama), Bear In Heaven began as the musical arm of Jon Philpot (also of Presocratics) way back in 1998. Time eventually brought in a slew of players, like rickety scaffolding, that grew the sound and guided the group to morph from a 6-to-5-to-4-piece. As a four-headed organism, Bear In Heaven has now found a sonic stride unlike any in their history. Freely acknowledging the importance of the number four, their second album 'Beast Rest Forth Mouth' (think "East West North South") was a conscious product of the four compass points, of the four makers, and of the inevitable confusion that manifests from that crossroad mentality: four directions could lead you anywhere and everywhere. It's the acknowledgement of what can go down at that convergence, at that dusty center, that drives Bear In Heaven and imbues the songs of 'Beast Rest Forth Mouth' with something akin to both eternal peace and nervous urgency.Go TryMP3 - Bear In Heaven - Wholehearted MessIf anyone from the IFPI is reading this track is published with the permission of TeamClermont so please refrain from alleging infringement of copyright.Go VisitBear In Heaven - Myspace // Last.FM // FacebookGo ViewBear In HeavenShining & FreeIf you like Bear In Heaven check out Jon Philpott's solo work...MP3 - Jon Philpot - The Nature of RealityIf anyone from the IFPI is reading these tracks are linked direct from Jon Philpot's Last.FM site and is therefore already freely available so please refrain from alleging infringement of copyright.
