More woozy, lo-fi bedroom dance pop from Columbia, South Carolina, courtesy of Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out. Bask in the warm, inviting glow of (possibly borrowed) nostalgia cast by the excellent "Feel it All Around," which somehow manages to feel both distant and fully engaging, and ... read more »

The SXSW Diaries // Day 3

Awesome Colors I got punched in the face last night. There I was stood staring in awe as Thurston Moore screamed the lyrics of a hundred hardcore anthems, printed neatly onto sheets of A4 paper. J Mascis stood behind him ripping through feedback, Jonah from Fucked Up shredding his bass. And there I was, mouth open, eyes to the clouds. And there he was, 180 pounds of stage diver, flying fist first into my face. I’ll save taking a fresh photo for tomorrow when the bruise is really shining. Right now I just look like a newly born puppy…. So that was pretty much the end of my evening. The Ecstatic Peace showcase was beyond amazing though. Talk Normal sounded incredible, Viv Albertine was great, Lord Jeff, Black Helicopter… But the real stars for me were Awesome Color. Wow. I liked what I’d heard before but live, I think they were the first act to properly blow me away this SXSW. I tried to tell them this after the show and all I could come up with was “Hi, that was awesome… uh… I mean great.” Nice job, Jen. Other highlights of the day included Stricken City, meeting Gwar in the Convention Center, and a killer set from Washed Out and Small Black. Everyone went pretty insane for the ‘Despicable Dogs’ into ‘Feel It All Around’ moment. Also worthy of a mention are Cloud Nothings. They’re from Cleveland, they have a record out on Speakertree and they play driven, fun, indie pop. It’s funny actually because they were a lot fiercer live than I’d expected, the pop element of some of the tracks I’ve heard online seemed to be replaced with a kind of slack determination. At times it bordered a more aggressive indie rock, but I think that was just from the drummer smashing away with his back to the crowd. Watch… Click here to view the embedded video. Anyway, I need to leave my hotel room in about 9 minutes so I’d best go. It looks like rain. The one day I need to wear sunglasses. Awesome Color: “Transparent” Cloud Nothings: “Hey Cool Kid (Memoryhouse Remix)” Washed Out: “Feel It All Around” Small Black: “Despicable Dogs” Washed Out & Small Black Cloud Nothings Related posts The SXSW Diaries // Day 2 The SXSW Diaries // Day 1 Song Of The Day #7 // Small Black: “Despicable Dogs” Download 103 (!!) free songs courtesy of Canadian Blast and Kelp Records

gorilla vs. bear presents :: Beach House + Washed Out | Live in Dallas

We are extremely psyched to present Baltimore's Beach House and opener Washed Out, on April 21 at Dallas' best venue for this sort of thing, the Granada Theater. We can't say enough about our love for the transcendant Teen Dream, and Ernest Greene's warm, hazy dream pop continues to soundtrack our endless summer, regardless of the temp. We've got 5 pairs of tickets to give away for this one... click through for more...

The Best of 2009

(I made this and I approve of the lens flare) I never really understood why some blogs and music sites put their “best of” lists out before the year was actually over, that might help explain why our Best of 2009 post is coming a bit after the new year. That and waiting on Kid Color to get his list finished (jokin’). But seriously, this past year doesn’t really need any kind of special recap, it was just a good year for music. From remixes to albums, there was much to celebrate in our community. I guess the only thing I’m still waiting on are the new LCD Soundsystem, Holy Ghost! and Cut Copy albums, not to mention a Justice follow-up, but I think those are all set to be released within the year. Anyway, much like last year, all linked albums take you to iTunes, mixes to wherever specified and select tracks to the HB server (available for a limited time.) And if you wouldn’t mind dropping us a line in the comments below, take a minute to let us know how our lists stacked up to yours and/ or how much we suck. Thanks and have a great 2010! The 50 Best Albums of 2009 (#25-1)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLIdD5UfXIo Brought to you by our sponsors, Brother Love and The Honky Tonk Man.  25. Diamond District - In The Ruff [Mello Music Group] Taking artists at their word is a notoriously tricky enterprise. Even allowing for 100 percent sincerity, intentions and ambitions are often discordant with the final results. Luckily, anyone attempting to assess Diamond District’s In the Ruff only has to watch this interview to see that they achieve everything they set out to do:  take elements of 90s hip-hop and give them a modern day re-interpretation, with heavy percussion, experimental patterns, and a D.C. go-go influence. As forthright about their influences (Pete Rock, Primo, De La) as they are in displaying their hometown pride, the trio of XO, yU, and Oddisee strike a perfect equipoise between the streets and Fat Beats, with backpack boasts sitting side-by-side next to vivid hood stories, as seen on “Streets Won’t Let Me Chill,” where XO cautions a would-be stick up kid eager to flex. Wale might have garnered the brunt of national attention, but the Diamond District delivered the DMV’s most complete album, one  that struck a balance between North and South and came refreshingly HPV Lady Gaga-free.  –JW MP3: Diamond District - “Hologram” MP3: Diamond District - “Something for Y’all” MP3: Diamond District - “Gully” MP3: Diamond District - “I Mean Business” 24. Method Man & Redman - Blackout 2 [Def Jam] History has since been corrected to acknowledge the original Blackout for the classic it is, so as soon as Red & Meth’s decade-long-awaited Blackout 2 leaked to the internet the call to arms was sounded — “TO THE BLUNTMOBILE!” But while this year’s sequel may not have received the same acclaim or generated quite the same excitement as 2009’s other high-profile franchise reboot (no, not this) Blackout 2 is equally worthy of its name. From blunt-cruising anthems “Dis Iz 4 All My Smokers” and “Father’s Day” to the Ghostface and Raekwon assisted “4 Minutes to Lockdown,” Blackout 2 is strictly for the A-alikes, with Method Man and Redman’s unique chemistry and mastery of the form on full display throughout. Blackout 2 may not have the same classic tracks that endure like “Da Rockwilder” or a “How High,” but you won’t find a more reliably enjoyable rap record this year. –Disco Vietnam MP3: Method Man & Redman ft. UGK - “City Lights” (more…)

Best Songs of 2009: 100-86

<script src="http://mediaplayer.yahoo.com/js"> </script> "All the Way Down" Tiny Animals Tiny Animals manage to capture the Killers, Silversun Pickups, and Weezer all in one anthemic song. Build up, break down, repeat. -Claire Tiller "Around the Bend" The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Thanks to an iTouch commercial, this will be cemented into the minds of Americans as "another catchy song from an Apple commercial." Those who know better, though, give credit where credit is due. Not only does "Around the Bend" excite the senses with simple lyrics and a danceable beat, but it includes a whole horn section. A horn section, people. Enough said. -Julie Gong "Feel It All Around" Washed Out Washed Out slows down Gary Low's "I Want You" and keeps the listener asleep aboard a comfortable airliner or adrift in calming ocean waters — depending on your particular interpretation, of course. The song is indicative of both the artist's title and the song's as there is a tingly cleansing feeling experienced as the song progresses, never going anywhere in particular and never needing to. -Andy DeLoach "Lady Luck" Richard Swift Richard Swift's fuzzed out falsetto over a steady bass and tambourine retro-groove make you wonder why Lady Luck wouldn't want to spend time with him. -Claire Tiller "Boy Boy" Lissy Trullie This single from the former New York model/DJ's debut EP — a labor of love a few years in the making — proves that she has plenty of substance to go with her style. -Jon Kjarsgaard "I've Got Friends" Manchester Orchestra "I've Got Friends" sums up The Aughts pretty well — computer blips and whirrs, wounded emo lyrics, and Andy Hull's Bright Eyes-meets-Silversun Pickups delivery. -Claire Tiller "To Lose My Life" White Lies Cruising along in the car while listening to a song called "To Lose My Life" proves oddly life-enhancing when it's this track from the young British trio. -Jon Kjarsgaard "Repeaterbeater" Mew The beginning of "Repeaterbeater" smacks you off your chair before launching into a slick prog-rock song with a churning guitar undercurrent and an arena-ready chorus. -Claire Tiller "Walking on a Dream" Empire of the Sun This is silky smooth electro-pop at its finest. The beat is soft and inspiring, and the song creates an atmosphere that draws parallels to blissful moments in life where time slows down and you feel love. Bless your vocal chords if you can hit those high notes in the chorus. -Chad Helminak "Crying Lightning" Arctic Monkeys In "Crying Lightning," the driving rhythm section sends us marching towards that girl from whom we should stay away. That evil, black magic woman countless generations of music warned us about is exactly the type of girl the Arctic Monkeys' are into — and this song is a moody, grooving, tribute to her. -Andy DeLoach "Finish Line" Fanfarlo Glorious xylophone-assisted pop from the London-based five-piece. You'd call it twee if it weren't so heart-melting and inviting. -Jon Kjarsgaard "The Fear" Lily Allen Lily Allen walks a tightrope between clever satire and utter irony in a dreamy dance-pop song that fluctuates between stark intimacy (or honesty?) and little girl lost in a synth-thick chorus. Hypocrisy never sounded so palpable, or so palatable. -Claire Tiller "Fables" The Dodos This San Francisco band treat their acoustics like electrics and that's the type of thinking that makes "Fables" suitable for rock venues, not just coffeehouse open-mics. Thank goodness, too, because this chorus sings like an anthem larger than both venues. -Andy DeLoach "Brackett, WI" Bon Iver Released as part of a compilation, this stands tall with the most revered tracks from Bon Iver's critically acclaimed debut For Emma, Forever Ago. Justin Vernon's penchant for layered vocals and a slow-building intensity is present and mesmerizing on this track, and it constantly keeps you hanging in anticipation for the next lyric. -Chad Helminak "All the King's Men" Wild Beasts Galloping drum beats, haunting falsetto background vocals, shimmering guitar licks, and a driving melodic pulse all lend this track a regal quality, befitting of the title and the song's seeming content: a king who like his concubines. However, Wild Beasts are able to supply a nuanced punch that makes it more poignant than the catchy hooks would suggest it was capable of. It's about using primal desires to mask a deeper yearning for child-like maternal guidance. And somehow Wild Beasts make that subject matter incredibly fun. -Peter Truby

Best Albums of 2009!

It's that time of the year again! Time for our Best Albums of 2009! This year there were tons of great albums released. I feel there were more this year than last year.  Here are some of my favorites in no particular order.  I'm sure I probably missed some, but these were the ones I listened to the most. Enjoy! The XX came out strong this year with an impressive minimal self titled debut that I could not get enough of.  More of a record that I hear late nights, it oozes sensuality and calms my nerves. Slow is the new heavy, didn't you know? <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/03 Crystalised.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Crystalised - The XX <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> After a rather disappointing sophmore album the Yeah Yeah Yeahs came out swinging in 2009 with 'It's Blitz' possibly their best album yet! More electronic and polished than their previous works and I'm loving it! 'Heads will Roll' with that amazing MJ (pre-death) video is in the running for best single/video of the year! Can't count how many times I've played that track out on the dancefloor and it always works. That intro synth and those first vocals by Karen O exclaiming 'off with your head' just makes people lose it on the dancefloor. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/Heads Will Roll.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Heads Will Roll - Yeah Yeah Yeahs <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> I waited a long time for Zoot Woman to return as I am a big fan of their first two records and they did not disappoint with their new one! 'Things are what they used to be' is an amazing electro-pop record!  One of my favorite albums of the year.  Sure it's not gonna appear in too many American 'Best Of' lists as their not as known in the States, but that's their loss! I'll keep them as my gem. Stuart Price is a genious!  He can write catchy pop songs like it's no ones business. Now please don't take that long for a new one... <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/04 Saturation.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Saturation - Zoot Woman <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Simian Mobile Disco's 'Temporary Pleasure' is a much more electro-pop song based record from them than many people would have anticipated.  They got tons of big name vocalists to contribute on this one including Gruff Rhys, Beth Ditto, Alexis from Hot Chip and Jamie Lydell, but the stand out track on this album is Audacity of Huge feat. Chris Keating of Yeasayer. Probably one of my favorite tracks/videos of 2009! So sweet, it gives you cavities. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/02 Audacity Of Huge.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Audacity of Huge - Simian Mobile Disco <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> As the name implies Sally Shapiro is one of my guilty pleasures of 2009. The production on this record is amazing! So crisp and clean. The beats, melodies and her voice are gorgeous! Although I didn't play this out as much out on the dancefloor as I would've liked it got plenty of plays at my apartment. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/06 Moonlight Dance.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Moonlight Dance - Sally Shapiro <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> With this years album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Phoenix finally live up to the potential they showed in their spectacular debut 'United'. Even though their second and third album weren't bad they didn't have the impact that this one did. 'Lisztomania' and '1901' provide an amazing one two punch that was hard to beat this year. They were everywhere, including Cadillac commercials. They were remixed by everyone and their mothers and most importantly they were big dancefloor winners. They are still crowd favorites, 6 months on and people still go nuts whenever I play either of those two tracks. Lisztomania is my personal favorite. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/01 Lisztomania.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Lisztomania - Phoenix <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Peter, Bjorn and John had a tough job ahead of them. How the hell were they gonna follow up their debut album Writers Block and their massive hit 'Young Folks'?!?! Easy don't let that affect you and make another amazing record. With Living Things they got a little darker and a little more electronic and it's awesome! 'It Don't Move Me' is one of my favorite tracks of 09 that obliterated the dancefloor all year long.  No sophmore slump to be found here. With this album they proved they are no one hit wonder. We can expect to hear many more albums from these amazing Swedes. Thank goodness for that. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/02 It Don't Move Me.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: It Don't Move Me - Peter, Bjorn and John <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Pet Shop Boys have been in the game for a long, long time so I wasn't expecting them to still have it after all these years, could they? With Yes they put out one of their most solid albums in years! Instantly classic Pet Shop Boys. 'Love, Etc' with that amazing video is probably one of the best songs they've ever written. When I first heard that track I was blown away!  It can easily fit into any future best of retrospectives they may have. Not bad for a band 25 yrs into their career. As a sidenote I saw them perform at the Fillmore this year for the first time and they were amazing! Great theatrics and Neil Tennant's still got the voice. Living legends. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/01 Love Etc mp3.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Love, Etc. - Pet Shop Boys <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Another band that came on with a bang in 09' was Passion Pit. Their debut album Manners blew up the blog-o-sphere eventually even making it to the dancefloor with tracks like 'The Reeling' (another contender for top singles of the year) and 'Little Secrets'. Amazing heartfelt indie pop that gave the genre a bit of a kick in the butt. They definitely got our attention. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/04 The Reeling.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: The Reeling - Passion Pit <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> We all love Erlend Oye! That voice of his is one of a kind, so smooth and beautiful. With album number two for Whitest Boy Alive they kept the instrumentation simple but the beats dancefloor friendly, particularly with tracks like 'Courage' which I still play out. I can never get enough of him. No sophmore slump here either. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/03 Courage.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Courage - Whitest Boy Alive <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Neon Indian was an artist that kinda slipped my radar for a bit, but glad I finally tuned in. Psychic Chasms is an amazing debut record which along with artists like Washed Out and a few others kinda started a whole new genre called dreamwave. Amazing fuzzy, lo-fi nostalgic sounding pop music. 'Deadbeat Summer' is my fave track, but they're all really good! <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/02 Deadbeat Summer.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Deadbeat Summer - Neon Indian <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> What can I say about Interpol lead singer Paul Banks. His voice is so unique and beautful I can never get enough of him. With his debut solo album as alias Julian Plenti he delivers more magic. Julian Plenti is Skyscraper delivers mostly slower tracks but with his trademark delivery that aren't too different from what you might hear on an Interpol record, and that's fine by me. A great late night record that got many listens at my place. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/03 Skyscraper.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Skyscraper - Julian Plenti <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Miike Snow is another artist that came out strong in 09 with their self titled debut. They were kinda a sleeper band that crept up on us. Before you knew it everyone was singing Animal drunk on the dancefloor at 2AM and dancing to the multitude of remixes for it.  One of the hands down best singles of 2009! But delve further the whole album is amazing... <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/01 Animal.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Animal - Miike Snow <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife fame came out strong in 09' with her own self titled solo album as Fever Ray. It's twisted, dark and haunting with her unmistakable voice and delivery.  Everything we would expect from Karin and we wouldn't want it any other way. Unexpectedly it got a lot of mainstream attention which is kinda weird for such a dark album. The videos were as creepy as it got in 09' each one darker and spookier than the last. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/05 Triangle Walks.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Triangle Walks - Fever Ray <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> The album that never got released. Still not sure if that was a marketing scheme or what but it is a great collaborative record by Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse featuring pics by the one and only David Lynch and featuring big name vocal collaborators like Julian Casablancas, Iggy Pop, Flaming Lips, Gruff Rhys, Jason Lytle and many others. They released it with the pics and a blank CD for you to get it from the internet of course. First heard it on NPR. My favorite track is the Wayne Coyne/Flaming Lips album opener 'Revenge' but the 'Little Girls' by Julian Casablancas track is right up there too. Played out Little Girls quite a bit on the dancefloor, but this is mainly a late night record as the name implies. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/01 Revenge (Feat. Wayne Coyne).mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Revenge (ft Wayne Coyne/Flaming Lips - Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Animal Collective are huge now! Amazing I got to see this band when they were up and comers and they played at I/O here in Miami a couple times. Super nice guys, but they were way more experimental back then. Now with the release of Merriweather Post Pavillion they've put out their most accesible record yet and it will show as it will top many Best of Lists for 09'. My Girls is the stand out track and personal fave. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/02 My Girls.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: My Girls - Animal Collective <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> First heard of the Crocodiles from my friend Lindsey then I kept hearing people talking about them till I finally got curious and checked out Summer of Hate. Glad I did! A great shoegazey rock record ala bands like Jesus and Mary Chain, Raveonettes and Echo and the Bunnymen which I think is were they got their album title from.  My favorite tracks are back to back 2 and 3 'I Wanna Kill' and 'Soft Skull (In My Room)' which both sound like instant classics! <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/02 I Wanna Kill.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: I Wanna Kill - Crocodiles <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> The Horrors possibly put out my favorite rock album of 2009! Primary Colours is an amazing sophmore record. I still have yet to hear their first album of which apparently this is a big departure from, but here they bring back the spirit of bands like Joy Division. Excellent moody, bass heavy rock n roll in a year dominated by the more electronic stuff. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/03 Who Can Say.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Who Can Say - The Horrors <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Frankmusik is pure electro-pop fun. A excellent week-end album as it gets me in the mood to go out and dance! Jumpy beats, swirling synths, excellent melodies and great production. What more could you want? 'Gotta Boyfriend' and 'Better off as Two' are my two faves. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/03 Gotta Boyfriend.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Gotta Boyfriend - Frankmusik <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Washed Out's Life of Leisure is actually an EP but it was so good I snuck it on here as well. Like Neon Indian and a few other artists he's kinda helped jumpstart the current dreamwavey, fuzzy lo-fi craze that I've been digging lately.  Can't wait to see were he takes us in the next few years. 'Feel it All Around' is lo-fi licious! <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/04 Feel It All Around.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: Feel it All Around - Washed Out  <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Yacht's See Mystery Lights was a solid indie album from DFA records of all places. It features an eclectic blend of electronics, percussions and all sorts of experimental noises plus shared male/female vocals which I always tend to like. 'The Afterlife' with it's catchy chorus and 'I'm in Love with a Ripper' are my two faves. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/I'm In Love With a Ripper.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: I'm in Love with a Ripper - Yacht <script language="JavaScript" src="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/audio-player.js"> </script> Julian Casablancas like contemporary Paul Banks/Julien Plenti also made the jump this year from band The Strokes to his own solo record. On his debut 'Phrazes for the Young' it feels like Julian let loose a little and had some fun with it. He dabbled a bit more with electronics, but it's not a whole lot different than what you'd find on a Strokes record. You can tell he's the mastermind behind the Strokes sound we all love. '11th Dimension' was one of my favorite singles of the year! It just doesn't get much catchier than 11th and you can't take away that he's one of the voices of our generation. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/11th Dimension.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: 11th Dimension - Julian Casablancas La Roux is another artist one who made a big splash in 09'. Got tons of play on the dancefloor, particularly remixes for Quicksand and In for the Kill that I've been playing all year long and still get's people dancing.  One of the most remixed artists out there. Her videos are pretty slick as well. Curious to see if she makes it in the long haul, but one things for sure she rocked 2009! <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/01 In For The Kill 1.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: In For the Kill - La Roux Another great artist which is not releasing her debut album till Feb 2010 but made a big splash with her EP The Crown Jewels in 2009 is Marina and the Diamonds. Absolutely loved all the tracks and amazing videos she released this year and I am really excited about her so I wanted to include her EP on this list as well. 'I Am Not a Robot' and 'Obsession' are sooo good! We have a lot to look forward to from this amazing artist in the years to come. <object data="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf" height="24" id="audioplayer1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="290"> <param name="movie" value="http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/player.swf"><param name="FlashVars" value="playerID=1&amp;soundFile=http://offtheradarmusic.com/audio/I Am Not A Robot.mp3"><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="menu" value="false"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></object> MP3: I Am Not a Robot - Marina and the Diamonds

Ernest m’a eu à Leisure

Washed Out – Phone Call (mon petit chouchou) Il a fini par trancher sur son EP Life Of Leisure : ça sera 80’s. Un chouill’ Cut Copy (Hold Out), un brin MGMT (New Theory) et sexy (Feel It Around). <object width="400" height="300"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"/><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"/><param name="movie" value="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=6692499&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1"/><embed src="http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=6692499&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=00ADEF&amp;fullscreen=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="400" height="300"></embed></object>

I distorted the truth to make it easier for you. The truth is: ordinary eternal machinery. -Leonard Cohen. Beautiful Losers, 1966 1. James Pants - Thin Moon (StonesThrow Records, 2009) 2. Ocuban - H. Florence and the Machine - You Got The Love (Jamie XX Rework feat. the XX) (not on label, 2009) 7. Unknown Artist - Its No Good (Bullion remix) (not on label, 2009) This is quite a contemporary list for me, an assortment of the songs that are stuck in my head. Lots of late night listening to the James Pants album, regretting (and secretly enjoying) the guilt coming from spending money I’m meant to be saving for overseas. All these tracks seem to have a kind of lovely DIY aesthetic - they all seem marked by particular hands, machines, times, scissors, and places. Brazilian beatmaker Ocuban’s brilliant debut album (which appears to have been self released) fits alongside the strange tape hiss of Nite Jewel. XX’s rework of Florence and the Machine (an immensely fun track to play to a crowd) works well with Bullion’s semi-soaring remix. P.S. there is a little Outfoxed event going down this Wednesday night @ Killing time, Melbourne, Australia. Ill be playing records from 9-1. Pic: Author’s

Back when we got flooded out, I spent most of my days indoors switching between listening to the rain and listening to a new favorite EP by Washed Out. I was first tipped off by Tara Davies while DJing together at the Sorry Darlin’ party. Went home and did some research, only to find that not only was the man behind Washed Out from the small Georgia town of Perry, but is also one of Pitchfork’s new crushes. To call Washed Out electronic pop is accurate and at the same time incredibly misleading. It is true that the backing tracks are entirely comprised of keyboards, synths, and drum machines… however the style of production and the vocals are more accurately described by the name alone… Washed Out. If I had to pick a point of reference. Think if M83 and Royksopp had recorded in 1982… and you got a copy that had been recorded off the radio and then copied and passed down a few times. If the recordings weren’t dreamy enough already, a fan made video surfaced that captured the feeling of the song “Feel It All Around” about as accurately as I would think possible. Shot by Chase Heavener on a Canon 5d MkII, the fixed focus and shallow depth of field produces an dream recall effect of friends on vacation. After talking to him for a bit online and visiting his blog, I determined that, not only is Chase an amazing photographer and filmmaker, but he and his friends go on the coolest vacations ever. Now, if you’re still reading this and listening to Washed Out, then you’re going to want to make it out to a special event he’s playing tomorrow night. The Kia Soul Collective series (flyer below) starts tomorrow night and features free performances, alcohol, and all other kinds of goodies you’d come to expect from a corporate sponsored event aimed at attracting “young taste makers” to their brand. Do You Believe That I’m a Deefrint Song, Babe?

One is slower. And the vocals are different. But yeah, other than that the similarity is substantial, and its hard not to feel a bit like something about the Washed Out track will never be the same. As good as it is, it kinda needs an asterik from now on. mp3: “Feel It All Around” - Washed Out (2009) mp3: “I Want You” - Gary Low (1983) All keeding aside, I like them both for different reasons. toro y moi x washed out

It doesn't get much chiller-wave than this: Toro Y Moi reworks his SC bro Washed Out's Gary Low-sampling gem, "Feel It All Around," lending the track even more achingly melancholy nostalgia. The track will appear on the b-side of Washed Out's forthcoming Feel It All Around 7" single, due soon on the great Transparent:mp3:washed out :: feel it all around (toro y moi remix) washed out :: feel it all around*********

Real Music

I love pianos. I wish I could play the piano like the bro from Kinch. SPEAKING OF KINCH… They’ve got a new album out and um, it’s free, so you should really consider picking it up. Get the whole Collars And Sleeves release here or just listen to “John Adams” to feel that good piano vibe. Kinch – John Adams Thunder Power is a down to earth band out of Omaha with some new some stuff that’s worth giving a listen to. I touched base on them a bit when they dropped “Take A Hike“, a cheeky little tune with a video to boot. Their new-ish album, And Everything After, seems to be a bit more low key than the previously released, Love Yourself. In any case, Kacynna’s voice is still as vintage and moving as ever, making Thunder Power one of my favorite, go-to chill bands. Thunder Power – Postscript This track by Washed Out came in as a recco from miracleGro, a half-contributor to this here blog. “Feel It All Around” is, in a way, quite melancholy and, as it turns out, fits well into “downer-side” of things. I think you know what I mean. If we’re not on the same page here, just listen to the song and you should be right on track. Washed Out – Feel It All Around If you watch Entourage you might have caught this at the end of last weeks (or the previous weeks) episode when the identity of Vince’s stalker was revealed. Someday I’d like to shake the hand of whoever directs the music for that show because they’re basically the best taste maker ever. “Sunrise” is definitely one for the valleys… Yeasayer – Sunrise (I posted this earlier this week, but I don’t care. So…) Beats™ Tagged: da band, indie, kinch, Mp3, music, Out of Genre, Thunder Power, washed out

Track By Track (New Tunes from the Interweb)

Rainbow Bridge - "Big Wave Rider"; Welcome to yet another example of why the whole "surf-fi"/"beach-core" scene is one of the fastest growing trends in music. This music is incessantly catchy, no matter how much they try to slow it down or make it into a jam friendly tune, you can still hear the surf punk roots that went into it. This maybe a fad that's getting ready to burn out in the colder weather but we're not ready to bid it adieu just yet.Grade: B+Jeans Wilder - "Tough Guys"; And some more lo-fi, this time from the Best Coast recommended Jeans Wilder. At this point we're getting tired of the same old same old so if you're gonna go lo-fi you're gonna have to pull out all the stops. These guys do things a bit differently, but the sound is so slow and grating that it's really tough to slog your way into the song. Maybe on repeated listens you could make it through, but right now it's just making me want to close my eyes.Grade: B-Ghostface Killah - "Stapleton Sex"; Know what's awesome? Having your neighborhood called out in a sexy ass song like this! To make it even better it's a new Ghostface song which is always something to celebrate, but this is some serious shit right here. Dirty, nasty, sexy, you name it. It's fun and dirty and sounds damn good.Grade: A-Washed Out - "Feel It All Around"; Yesterday afternoon Ryan Schreiber (of Pitchfork) and Gorilla Vs. Bear started tweeting up a storm about this song. Now normally I take my time going and listening to new music but when two well respected tastemakers start raving about something I speed up the process a bit. Not gonna lie, this song is pretty tight but I don't know if it was worth 22 tweets each (exaggeration).Grade: BAlberta Cross - "Steel and Glass"; Covering John Lennon definitely takes some balls, but doing so when everyone in the world is going nuts over them (again) could turn out to be a brilliant move or a disaster. This is somewhere in the middle.Grade: C+Dirty Ghosts - "Battle Slang"; While most of San Francisco has gone lo-fi some folks are still branching out and trying new things. Dirty Ghosts, a new trio featuring programming from Aesop Rock, is really going in a different direction trying to fuse elements of straight up rock with hip hop and actually succeeding in what they're doing. Need more listens but this is pretty cool.Grade: B+Or, the Whale - "Rusty Gold"; Isn't it bad enough that your dog died? Do you really have to croon mournfully about it? This song is just plain and simple sad, and boring. Like whoa.Grade: C-Railcars - "Castle"; Talk about taking shitgaze to a new level, this duo is rocking slightly harder then Fuck Buttons but are also dancier then Times New Viking. They straddle the line between listenable and deafness. This is crazy stuff and it will take some getting used to but if you can get into it there's definitely a little something to it. I think. Maybe?Grade: BTrack of the Week:The Señors of Marseille - "Davey"; Holiday Records has done a good job of rounding up a bunch of the new generation of lo-fi bands, The Drums, Surfer Blood, and more, and the latest is The Señors of Marseille. I got this in an e-mail late last night that I think was meant for someone else, but every once in a while fortune shines done and gives you a nugget. This tune is a rollicking good time, not quite in step with all the other acts on Holiday Records, but absolutely worthy of your attention anyway. It's a little more pop (thanks to the piano and vocal harmonies) but in a very, very good way. Check it.Grade: A<script type="text/javascript"> sr_adspace_id = 4549407; sr_adspace_width = 728; sr_adspace_height = 90; sr_adspace_type = "graphic"; sr_ad_new_window = true; </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ad.afy11.net/srad.js?azId=4549407"> </script>

The August Mixtape

This month’s mix of the best new music holds together quite well as a compilation, if I do say so myself. It‘s been a quiet summer around here at the luxurious PHW headquarters - with 6 month old twins to take care of there hasn’t been a lot of time to get outdoors as much as my wife and I would have liked. There have been a lot of lazy (but still plenty hectic) days around the house filled with dirty diapers, hungry babies, and the occasional stolen nap. While I wouldn‘t trade the time spent with my daughters for anything, there was always the sense of missing out on the beaches, boardwalks, festivals, vacations, and concerts that have been a regular part of my summers since forever. Hence kind of feeling like a deadbeat. Hence also the “title” of this mix - which is also a nod to the grainy, lo-fi beach music circulating this summer (not to mention this comp featured over at Aquarium Drunkard recently).Luckily the comfortable feeling of semi-isolation I‘ve experienced lately has been well-soundtracked. “Island, IS”, by Justin Vernon and his friends in the Volcano Choir side project, seems predetermined to bleed into Au’s “Ida Walked Away” and the Afro-pop of The Very Best’s “Julia”. Some of those aforementioned blurry beach jams come next, followed by the latest free Radiohead tune, a batch of skuzzy garage rockers, the supersonic sheen of The Big Pink, and finally a run through a pair of lilting folk tunes, the last of which is the elegiac title track to the upcoming Simon Joyner record. It’s actually quite a seemless little mix - much more than just a collection of the month’s best music…which it also is. As always, thanks for reading and ch-check it out:MP3 :: Island, IS - Volcano Choir (original post)MP3 :: Ida Walked Away - Au (original post)Link :: Julia - The Very BestMP3 :: Seasun - DeloreanMP3 :: Feel It All Around - Washed OutMP3 :: Deadbeat Summer - Neon IndianMP3 :: Despicable Dogs - Small BlackZIP :: These Are My Twisted Words - Radiohead (original post)MP3 :: Bowie Knives - MazesMP3 :: You’re A Target - No Age (original post)MP3 :: Girl In Love - Smith Westerns (original post)MP3 :: Cone Of Light - The Almighty DefendersLink :: Dominos - The Big Pink (original post)MP3 :: Ravens - Secondstar (original post)MP3 :: Out Into The Snow - Simon Joyner (original post)----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------And check out the rest of the year’ monthly mixes:JanuaryFebruaryMarchAprilMayJuneJuly--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washed Out-”Feel It All Around”

My former Stylus colleague, Mike Orme tagged “Feel It All Around,” from South Carolina’s Washed Out, with a Pitchfork Best New Tracks this morning. Rather than fritter away an afternoon grappling with ways to reiterate what Mike already said, I’ll just co-sign his sentiments regarding Ernest Greene’s sublime vision, “stuck somewhere in an imagined euphoria set after the art rock of the late 70s, with a dotted line drawn directly through the swath of synth pop and all the way to the psychedelic, guitar driven Brit-pop of the Stone Roses.” It’s easy to sneer at the Balearic descended beach pop that’s bombarded the blogs all season long, but there’s also something heartening about it–the wide majority of it self-released or on tiny indies like Acephale or Sincerely Yours. All of it ideal for that last Labor Day gasp of summer. Save your censure for the PR deluge surrounding the Girls or Big Pink records. Right now, trying to fight Washed Out, JJ, Javelin or Memory Tapes is tantamount to swimming against the tide. Feel It All Around by Washed Out

Who: Washed Out from Columbia, South Carolina. What: An introduction to the hazy and sleepy, bedroom dance bliss of Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out.  For me, the song below evokes images of love scenes from 80s movies, cut to scenes of beaches in twilight.  It comes from an upcoming LP due in the fall 2009 on Mexican Summer and on a 7″ in October on Transparent. Song: Feel It All Around.

You’ll Know It’s Yours And No One Else

Washed Out “Feel It All Around” I’m not sure whether or not the background hum in “Feel It All Around” is actually a sustained sample from 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love,” but either way, the sound effectively places this song in the same emotional spectrum while carving out its own niche of muted, shell-shocked melancholy. The genius in this music, however, is in the way this lovelorn state is presented with a cool, dispassionate front of someone who has either become deliberately numb, or is in very deep denial about their pain. Visit the Washed Out MySpace page. Grooms “Dreamsucker” The guitars here trade off between mellow arpeggios and blasts of distortion, and so we’re in well-trod and comfortable territory, particularly if you’re into Sonic Youth and more guitar-centric post-rock bands like Gastr Del Sol and Dianogah. The thing that makes this track really pop, though, is in the way the percussion and vocals build up this fidgety, wired feeling, like you’re literally shaking from too much caffeine, but you’re still a bit sleepy and/or lost in some sort of mental fog. Track By Track (New Tunes from the Interweb)

Small Black - "Despicable Dogs"; Music blogs across the country are debating what to call this whole "new" genre of music and I'm totally staying out of the fray. It's another version of the lo-fi movement just a bit happier and sunnier then shit like Times New Viking. That doesn't merit a new name or much else unless there's something substantial to it. This is not one of those songs. It's light, cute, and summery, but not worthy of a whole new genre of music. At least not one so many people should be paying so much attention to.Grade: C+Lake - "Madagascar"; I hope you guys haven't finished your summer mixed tapes because this laid back track would definitely fit well on it. Kind of weird that it's just coming out now, oh wait the album's not due till October??? That makes no sense at all. Oh well, at least we have this tune for the last few days of summer!Grade: BLove of Diagrams - "Forever"; I am totally not understanding why the vocals are so buried on this tune, or why this tune is so lackluster but it's really a bit disconcerting. I truly enjoyed the last Love of Diagrams record but if this is any proof of what the album's going to be like I'm gonna have to take a pass on it.Grade: D+Dinosaur Feathers - "Don't Fear the Vagabonds"; In a couple of weeks Dinosaur Feathers will be releasing a totally unexpected EP and this is the first tune off of it. It's kind of a weird tune with lots of harmonious vocals but few actual lyrics being sung. It's also skewed and warped and played with throughout the duration. Not an easy tune at all, but definitely something that is piquing my curiosity!Grade: B+Jemina Pearl (ft. Iggy Pop) - "I Hate People"; Folks it is time to get over the Be Your Own Pet breakup and move on. We all realize they were a promising young punk band but now Jemina is striking out on her own, enlisting Iggy Pop for help, and generally bringing a lot of the 60's girl group meets punk rocker vibes on to her solo project. Well, not exactly solo, she does have quite a few capable musicians helping her out but the spotlight is most certainly on her spunky self. To be honest Iggy Pop doesn't add much to this tune, but then it is a little bit of a fluff piece compared to some of Pearl's harder hitting tunes.Grade: B-The Mountain Goats - "Genesis 3:23"; So John Darnielle has gone and named all of his new tunes after Bible verses. So here's this verse, "So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.". You see Adam and Eve had just been banished from the Garden and Darnielle is singing about returning to his old family home. It kind of makes sense, if you stretch it a little bit. But yeah, pretty much straight forward Mountain Goats right here.Grade: BShark? - "Fear!"; A couple weeks ago I mentioned Shark? for the first time and named them my Band of the Week, turns out the guys were already working on new stuff when I did that and so we get "Fear!" out of it. This another dirty little tune, recorded with lots of noise and less then crisp production, but it's also got another solid vibe to the overall feel of it. Not the biggest fan of the vocals here, but I like the rest a lot.Grade: BA Sunny Day In Glasgow - "Ashes Grammar/Ashes Math"; A Sunny Day In Glasgow's follow-up to their 2007 debut is due in a couple of weeks and boy has there been a lot of changes in the Philly band's camp. It lead to a much different sound, one far more fleshed out than the bedroom-recorded sounds on the debut. The tunes are expansive with a lot of synth a sounds added to the fray, but the depth is actually pretty impressive to behold.Grade: B+Young Prisms - "Weekends and Treehouses"; Another psychedelic, lo-fi outfit out of San Francisco! The streets must be teeming with these guys out west! Like a lot of their brethren, they prefer the dirtier sort of sounds but do well to mix in a lot vocal harmonies and sounds not necessarily being used in full out there. It makes for something of a different listen, which is a good thing in tight knit scenes, and adds some variety to the fold.Grade: A-Track of the Week:Music Go Music - "Warm in the Shadows"; People are having a lot of fun describing Music Go Music's latest tune tossing around names like ABBA and Olivia Newton John and mixing them with Rocky Horror or ELO. Truth is if you've ever had a thing for dance oriented pop tunes then this will be your new favorite song. It definitely has a lot of that throwback feel to it, sounds a smidge like Debbie Harry in roller skates. See, lots of fun describing it and even more fun listening!Grade: A<script type="text/javascript"> sr_adspace_id = 4549407; sr_adspace_width = 728; sr_adspace_height = 90; sr_adspace_type = "graphic"; sr_ad_new_window = true; </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ad.afy11.net/srad.js?azId=4549407"> </script>

New Washed Out - "Feel It All Around"

In a similarly dreamy realm as fellow Columbia, South Carolina multi-instrumentalist and friend Toro y Moi, Washed Out, aka Ernest Greene, gets us ready for a chilly summer (or July Language, if you're thinking Belong) with the woozy ambience of "Feel It All Around." It's like a more insular Quiet Village until the vocals start and draw you a few steps closer, but the ending fade makes the whole thing disappear before you get a chance to burrow in deeply enough. This fleetingness is maybe part of its charm. And, why do I keep thinking about "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss"? Continue reading New Washed Out - "Feel It All Around"...

feel it all around

More woozy, lo-fi bedroom dance pop from Columbia, South Carolina, courtesy of Ernest Greene, aka Washed Out. Bask in the warm, inviting glow of (possibly borrowed) nostalgia cast by the excellent "Feel it All Around," which somehow manages to feel both distant and fully engaging, and look for a tape from Washed Out soon on Mirror Universe:mp3:washed out :: feel it all around**********New single from the Big Pink, taken from their debut album A Brief History of Love, due out in September on 4AD.mp3:the big pink :: dominospreviously:mp3:the big pink :: velvet (gang gang dance remix)**********
