Redthreat Lollapalooza Afterparty Guide
Devo & Dirty Projectors : Thursday // August 5th // Congress Theater
More of a pre-party, really. Devo & Dirty Projectors are playing the largest, yet most intimate venue in the city: Congress Theater. Best of the best, new & old- I’m not sure who to be more excited for.
Dirty Projectors – I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine
The New Pornographers & The Dodos : Thursday // August 5th // Metro
Canadian super-group, The New Pornographers, released Together, their fifth release with collaborations including St. Vincent & Beirut. The Dodos are also awesome- a San Fran rock group known for unique instrumentation.
The New Pornographers – Moves
Cymbals Eat Guitars : Thursday // August 5th // Schubas
A New York based indie group, when they first emerged on the scene pitchfork fell in love with their debut album, Why There Are Mountains. Like all the bands listed sofar, Cymbals Eat Guitars also have a Lollapalooza slot.
Cymbals Eat Guitars – And The Hazy Sea
The Big Pink : Thursday // August 5th // Lincoln Hall – Read in Previous Post.
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros : Friday // August 6th // Lincoln Hall
Edward Sharpe, a fictitious character, “was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind…but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love.” This rock-ensemble has been on a roll since their ’09 debut, Up From Below.
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros – The 40 Day Dream
Wild Beasts : Friday // August 6th // Empty Bottle
The Mercury Prize always seems to find great nominations for best album, and Wild Beasts’ We Still Got The Taste Dancin’ On Our Tongues is no exception. The lead singers got some pipes on him, doesn’t he?
Wild Beasts – We Still Got The Taste On Our Tongues
Kaskade & James Amato : Friday // August 6th // Smartbar
If you want to start off your night where Perry’s Stage left off, here’s your place. Kaskade’s residency night always gets packed, and this afterparty has the king of fidget, James Amato, back in his home away form home.
James Amato Mix For Pulse 98.4FM Scottland {fairtilizer}
The Soft Pack : Saturday // August 7th // Schubas
The Soft Pack are an indie/punk(ish?) band out of LA, originally hailing from San Diego, where they were known as The Muslims. I’m very much looking forward to seeing for the first time. Pick up The Soft Pack.
The Soft Pack – Answer To Yourself
The National & The Antlers : Saturday // August 7th // House Of Blues
Many people are waiting for Matt Berninger’s huge barritone vocals to be the upset of the festival here this weekend. This show is sold out, so if you weren’t intending on seeing them at Lolla, you might want to reconsider.
The National – Slow Show
Wavves : Saturday // August 7th // Empty Bottle – Read this Previous Post.
Health : Sunday // August 8th // Reggie’s – Read this Previous Post.
Digitalism : Sunday // August 8th // Lincoln Hall
Digitalism is easily one of my favorite electronic acts, and they never come to Chicago. Their debut, Idealism, is a masterpiece. Catch their aftershow, with many other incredible Chicago DJ talents & go out with a bang.
Digitalism – Pogo
Phoenix & Toro Y Moi : Sunday // August 8th // House Of Blues
I’m sure you all know Phoenix by now. Saw ‘em at Coachella this year and they were awesome. Toro Y Moi is the stagename for Chazwick Bundick, who creates music that I am extremely fond of. Simply gorgeous stuff.

One of my favorite records from last year was Up From Below by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Woody put it eloquently in his review, saying that they make him want to “crap sunshine.” I wouldn’t advise doing that, because I’m sure it burns. They do put out great summertime music though.
Here’s their latest video for “Home.”

Stop what you’re doing. The award for the most joyous album of the month goes to this 11-piece barefooted hippie-folk outfit from LA.
Up from Below is a classic analogue-sounding album which sounds like it was recorded somewhere in the 60s by a cohort of close-knit kindred spirits intent on bringing some love to the world. It’s got that mystic, feel-good singalong vibe and an undeniable link to the counter-culture of the past. The band even tour in a big yellow school bus for jaysus sake.
There’s a psychedelia-influence and although it’s hard to pinpoint exact influences there are echoes of, as many have pointed out – Johnny Cash and June Carter, The Mamas and Papas, Dusty Springfield, Motown, Roy Orbison, a tinge of Arcade Fire bombastics and Ennio Morricone yet it still feels entirely fresh. It might be down to the exuberance of the band, particularly the vocalists Alex Ebert (formerly of Ima Robot) and Jade Castrinos’ boisterous timbre.
Huge props to Cougar Microbes for recommending these guys on the recent blogger trip to Paris. He’s so infatuated he went to all three of their London gigs recently.

You know, I’ve been fighting liking this band for so long now. I just can’t get behind the fact that this guy was in Imarobot and now he’s some hippie guru that needs 20 of his friends on stage to warble some tunes. Just seems like an act to me. Especially considering that Imarobot was always a Hollywood band… seemed like it was just a sceney thing. So it makes me feel like they just invented this new thing to have some more fun times together. Not genuine. People assure me that’s not true, but I don’t know man. Plus, every industry person and their mother was fawning over this band like they were the next Arcade Fire. People who wouldn’t know the next Arcade Fire level band if it was playing in their backyard. Bleh. (Wow, this is quite the rant for so early in the morning!)
BUT…
The one thing that ALWAYS wins out is good songs. And that they do have. There are some good ones here. So I’m partially caving.
I just can’t watch things like this because I see the girl next to him dancing like she’s Ray Charles and I want to spit out my Cheerios:

On a magical, aural journey of love and happiness (not to mention a multi-coloured, converted school-cum-tour bus) with their self-titled album, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are the breath of fresh air the music scene has been waiting for.
The ten piece troupe of folk/hippie madness, fronted by Alex Ebert of Ima Robot, has burst onto the scene with overflowing joy and cheerfulness in all its bearded, bohemian-clothed glory.
While drawing comparisons to Arcade Fire, songs like Home and 40 Day Dream are unparalleled with their use of xylophones, pianos, percussion and whistles. I haven’t been able to get Home out of my head for days. A love ballad that you can relate to, Ebert’s romantic falsetto keeps you humming and whistling along long after the song is over .
The 60’s feel to the album by any other band would feel pretentious, but Edward Sharpe & co. pull it off by sheer talent and musical genius. Already my nominee for album of the year.

The third annual Monolith Festival takes over the dramatically scenic crags of Red Rocks this weekend, with more music than you can shake a stick at or, say, run up and down a gazillion stairs for. You wouldn’t think it possible, but the organizers manage to fit five separate stages within the historic park, taking full advantage of the gorgeous views of Denver in the distance and the rosy rocks all around.
For the last two years, Monolith has packed in a sizable number of good artists, both well-known and fledgling newbies. This year is no different, with dozens of folks I want to see at what still feels like a boutique festival, in a very good way. You can get thisclose to the bands and get from stage to stage fairly easily (while toning your glutes — did I mention the stairs?). I plan to make the very most of my weekend this weekend — tickets are still available, and I think you should come too.
This year, Fuel/Friends contributor-pal Dainon is coming to the fest with me, to help cover all the goodness that is rarin’ to occur. We’ve each picked a handful of bands we are putting down as “can’t miss” on our Gigbot schedules. Who would you add? And why aren’t you coming? Oh, you are. Okay, good.
HEATHER & DAINON DO MONOLITH: 2009 EDITION
HB: Simply from the band name Cymbals Eat Guitars, this Staten Island band had me at hello, before I even experienced their massively sweeping, shimmering music that alternates between chaotic lo-fi punk and the most enormous moments of Explosions In The Sky. The buzz behind this group after only a self-released album (that took off after Pitchfork named it Best New Music]. It’s like Chocolate Eats Guacamole, or Using Your Turn Signal Eats Long Hot Showers. I mean, if good eats good, you end up with something even more amazing, methinks. Let’s see.
And The Hazy Sea - Cymbals Eat Guitars
[Saturday 5:40pm, WOXY.com stage]
DM: There’s a reason why I saw Thao with The Get Down Stay Down three times in a row, three concerts in a row, three days in a row earlier this year (something I refer to as my own personal Three Thao Tour) … and it has to do with the honesty that accompanies a Thao Nguyen performance. She loses herself in her craft every single time she plays: the eyes shut and the guitar is wielded like a battle axe. Now that she’s got a new album on the horizon, with lots more shiny new songs to show off, this is an unequivocal no-brainer.
Bag of Hammers - Thao Nguyen
[Saturday 2:30pm, main stage]
HB: I apparently like having my insides pulled out of me in devastating fashion. This makes me a good candidate for sorority girl in a slasher film or, since we’re actually talking in metaphors here, attending a Frightened Rabbit show. Fronted by a pair of literate brothers from Selkirk, Scotland, Frightened Rabbit released one of my favorite albums in 2007 and puts on a powerfully visceral, poundingly jangly, truly honest show. I will not miss this one.
The Modern Leper - Frightened Rabbit
[Saturday 3:30pm, main stage]
DM: I hesitate to say I want to see Cotton Jones, only because it doesn’t seem like they’ve a rabid following, not that I can tell. I’d kinda sorta like to keep it that way, too. Liked ‘em when they were Page France but, with the organ in the mix, listening to their album is akin to filling my mouth with candy jawbreakers and not wanting to share. If you decide to show, just try and keep it down, yeah?
Blood Red Sentimental Blues - Cotton Jones
[Saturday 7:00pm, WOXY.com stage]
HB: Yes, OK Go does that genius dance in their backyard. Four years ago when that video came out, we didn’t have the luxury that we do now of sitting at a bar with friends watching it on an iPhone, as I did a couple of weeks ago. And guess what? It’s still marvelous. And I’ve always truly dug the sexy, driving pop sound of their music and its roots in semiotic intelligentsia (frontman Damian Kulash majored in it, and loves to create word images and twist a lyric so it rolls off the tongue just right). Dancing or no, this will be a really fun set to see.
You’re So Damn Hot - OK Go
[Saturday 4:45pm, main stage]
DM: It seems like Fancy Footwork has been around forever now, right? Do you know Chromeo? Do you know they could prolly work you into a dancier, sweatier mess than Girl Talk? Did you know they lucked themselves straight into a time machine, picked up some sounds from both Hall and Oates in 1978 and polished them off for the rest of us to benefit from? Well, if you didn’t … you do now.
Fancy Footwork - Chromeo
[Sunday 8:45pm, Southern Comfort stage, also DJing the VIP/Opening party Friday night]
HB: Nothing about a band called Deer Tick can be mistaken for enchanted twee pop, or, as their MySpace page says, they are “0% indie rock. Believe it, butt-head.” There’s a good helping of rustic twang here, but not that this is a whistlin’ Dixie mullet-hunting way to spend an hour of your Sunday at Monolith. Think the old-time radio sounds of M. Ward (also on the bill this weekend) meets the rowdiest of The Felice Brothers but with a piercingly ragged, whiskey-soaked howl, and you’ll be on the right track.
Smith Hill - Deer Tick
[Sunday 7:00pm, WOXY.com stage]
DM: Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are the new freak-folky Devendra Banharts of the festival. If their Dave Letterman network television debut taught us anything, it’s that all we need is love. And beards. And an absolute bare minimum of four tambourines.
40 Day Dream - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes

We now know that the Club Garibaldi stage holds nine. Last night’s Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros show revival might have been one of the year’s best, but we’ll let you chat that up in the comments. One night after their appearance on David Letterman the band completely sold out the venue and was, in my opinion, simply fantastic. We’ve got the photos to prove it thanks to Erik. Big thanks to Jeremiah Nelson for an amazing opening set. Thanks to everyone who came out and made last night memorable.

Muzzle of Bees + 91.7 WMSE are proud to present Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros + Jeremiah Nelson at Club Garibaldi on Saturday, September 5th.
You may recall the creepy/bizarre video we posted earlier this year. Since SXSW, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros have been on a trailblazing tour, selling out venues, and, most recently, packing our favorite Chicago joint, Schubas. The sheer size of this band is worth coming to check out alone, though after the initial awe wears off you’ll have stayed to see one of the best artists to emerge this year.
Tickets are $10 and on sale now. Please buy your tickets early as this space is small and will fill up fast, especially with 10 band members!

As long as we’re talking about lanky frontmen who sing like preachers, let me drop some English about my new favorite band, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes.
Pretty much all I need to tell you is that they’re a twelve-person band with a Jesus-Freaks-in-the-desert thing goin’ on, and you’ll understand how I fell so hard so fast.
I’d give them the Gentle Hippies tag, but they’re not entirely gentle.
On tour now, hitting SF on September 15 (The Independent, $10, what are you waiting for?) and October 18 (Treasure Island Music Festival).

So this is the band that makes NPR commentators weep with emotion? This is the band the LA press is all over right now? I actually got put on to them by checking out a random email in the blog mailbox and I can tell you in all honesty that after 20 minutes of listening to the album and watching videos, I was tearing up myself. Alex Ebert (formerly of the band Ima Robot) and the rest of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros show an amazing amount of heart in the thirteen songs that make up their album Up From Below. Even so, their studio recordings sometimes sound a bit sterile. Where they really shine is in their live performances. I dare you to watch the video of their song “Home”, which was filmed during their very first show, and not have your heart swell up a couple of sizes. There is just something about seeing two people in love up on stage, singing a song to each other that they wrote together, while people scream and cheer around them. It’s basically a celebration of Love (which I think is what they are going for in the end), and that can’t not affect you in some way. People have been pretty harsh to them in reviews and have mangled their record trying to fit it into a nice, neat category. I won’t deny that it’s pretty hard to miss the comparisons to Arcade Fire (or the especially scathing description “hippie version of Arcade Fire”) and some other psych/folk acts of late, but you have to move passed that in order to enjoy it in a new light. Plus, when did Arcade Fire put a patent on punctuating drum hits with “Hey” and having five people sing at once anyways? The band is coming to San Francisco in September so go and make yourself happy for two hours (god know you could use it).

I’ve been incredibly busy the past couple of weeks (primarily moving, among other things) and I’m just now finally getting settled in. I don’t think I’ve had this kind of incessant time away from blogging since I started this thing, but hopefully things will get back to normal around here.
What better way to kick things off than with The Daily Graboid, as this will be another chunk of the last month or so of releases that I’ve missed. Starting next week I will probably get back to a weekly posting of this, so I’m sure that will at least please the majority of you.
Feel free to recommend anything I may have missed!

Today I began the slow and tedious process of sifting through the debris of my woefully neglected inbox. There’s a lot of crap in there to be honest, but every now and then I do come across something that does catch my interest.
I’d never heard of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros before today, but this video below of a recent performance of ‘40 Day Dream’ makes me think that they’d be a damn fun band to see live. Though the stage is packed full of people and instruments they still manage to get a surprising amount of movement happening. Great energetic sound too.
You can also check out a comprehensive review of their new album Up From Below over at Citizen Dick.

Muzzle of Bees + 91.7 WMSE are proud to present Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros at Club Garibaldi on Saturday, September 5th.

As a general rule I hate hippies. They’re dirty, they have bad taste in music and they are often vegetarians. A hippie can talk for hours about the cosmic earth mother and the collective need for universal love without saying a single thing of substance. And god forbid you get a hippie talking about their hemp pants or their hand-blown glass water bong. Not even a 2nd grader stuck inside on a rain day is that excited about arts and crafts.
To be fair, I should differentiate between the different kind of hippies. The ones that I’m talking about - the ones I can’t stand - are the least genuine. They are the kind that come from upper class families in Southern California, who go to the University of Oregon where they subsequently stop bathing and develop an unhealthy affinity for jam bands. They are the kind of hippie that hangs out on Haight Street, asking me for spare change to buy some granola for their dog. They are the kind of hippie that preaches peace and love and then tries to cut me in line at the farmer’s market.
Any hippie falling into or near the above mentioned categories is fully deserving of all my derision. This is because they are all pathetic fakers; uncreative people who have borrowed an entire cultural movement wholesale because they are too lazy to start their own. And they picked the easiest one. To me this just says that you are not only lazy, but that you love armpit hair and the dirty crotch smell of patchouli.
That said, it’s hard for me to really hate on the original hippies. After all, they were rebelling against the square attitudes of the 50s, and they are largely responsible for a lot of the relaxed moral standards we enjoy today. And I can’t lie - the first time I took mushrooms and went to a Grateful Dead show it was pretty cool. Of course, I was 16 and just being out of the house and high on anything was pretty cool to me at the time. But still. I can at least see what the hippies from back in the day were getting out of it.
Fast forward to right now and you’ll find a group of hippies that I actually respect. These are not the skunky gutter punks hanging out in the park and they are not the hacky sack playing douche bags you find at Dave Mathews concerts. These are modern day freaks, stoned on life and happy to let their freak flag fly. It might be more astute to say that these are people who couldn’t be any other way. They are simply wildly creative non-conformists who grow their hair long and like to howl at the moon.
These so-called hippies have loosely cohered around the freak folk movement, but most of them are more freaky than folk. Brightblack Morning Light, Devendra Banhart - these are acts that appeal not just to groovy hippie chicks and aging surfers. They cast a much wider net because what they are doing is genuinely creative and 100% sincere. They can’t be anything else but themselves. I mean, have you ever heard Devendra Banhart talk? That guy couldn’t hold an office job if his life depended on it.
Another group that should be added to this good hippie honor roll is Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. This rag tag posse of Los Angeles based troubadours has a care-free, yet highly musical vibe that rests somewhere between The Band and Arcade Fire. Their songs reel back and forth between camp fire sing-a-longs and full gospel revival. In between they get weird, they get funky and they get loose. It’s the kind of sound that makes me want to grow my hair long and jump on the free love express. It makes me want to share my wine and bang on a drum all day - which is probably exactly what Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros expect of their audience.
Well, I’m not going to stop showering or anything, but I can get down with that.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros is a sizable indie folk-revival formed by Alex Ebert of Los Angeles electro-rock group ImaRobot, an endeavour that started to take shape after the musicians separated from Virgin Records in 2007. Alex Ebert took on the alter-ego of Edward Sharpe and assembled a collective of around ten-plus musicians, a bit of a looser and possibly more personal and freeing project then the former major label efforts.
I had originally heard of the Magnetic Zeros’ storied live show and was pleased to hear their new album “Up From Below” mirrored the solid ruminations coming from the local live music grapevine.
The song we are featuring here today is “40 Day Dream”, a sweeping modernized shoo-wop beat layered with a soulful voice that sweeps the listener into Rod Stewart territory while recollecting the Beatles ‘Magical Mystery’ era, all without missing a beat.
The group seems to be poised for cult-like status as they’ve moved beyond typical song construction and standard video patterns, and into the territory of beautifully directed rock operas of sorts. They’ve already gone and released PART 1 of a 12-Part feature-length movie musical. The opening footage of “Desert Song” is of singer Alex Ebert’s father chanting in Monument Valley – shot by his mother. This piece is about Alex’s reckoning with the middle name his father secretly wrote on his birth certificate – a Native American name which means ‘Devil’ or ‘Demon’.
The debut album from Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, “Up From Below”, is now available in the US as of July 14th in the US and July 13th in the UK.
The debut EP, “Here Comes”, is also available now on iTunes [cs]

When my brother and I were little we used to get a slice of ham from our local butcher, just because we were cute and vertically challenged. I found ham has never tasted as good as it did then, and I think it has everything to do with the fact that it was a free surprise. I felt the same way about the songs I found in my inbox a few weeks ago (yeah, I’m a little backed up). Rough Trade sent around an email to promote Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (then) upcoming debut album, including three free sample songs. At first I was so delighted with the lyrical equivalent of free ham, I thought maybe that’s why these songs sound so great. No-no-no, these songs are genuinely beautiful, and who am I to deny you all three delicious gems?
I must admit I throw the old familiar superlatives around a lot, so you might be a bit sceptical. Which is why I wish I could force people to listen to these songs – you know, like in the Ludovico aversion therapy scene in Clockwork Orange, except with wonderful songs rather than disturbing images. The song that I’d play, while you were strapped in my chair would definitely be “40 Day Dream”. It’s reminiscent of The Beatles’ post-Revolver psychedelic, infectious happy raucous of voices, strings, piano, home-made beats that carry the carefree lyrics, a killer chorus and that magical, magical mystery, that is love and peace and … basically all that flower-power hippie crap we secretly really wished we could have experienced the first time around. Their debut came out earlier this week so if you, my dear droogs, love these songs, go pick up their pop-disk Up From Below.

We told you about the rumors a few months ago, and now we’ve got a confirmed lineup for the 2009 Treasure Island Festival (with most of the rumors turning out to be true).
The two-day festival will be headlined by MGMT and the Flaming Lips. As with the past two years, the folks at Another Planet Entertainment kept the two days largely broken up by genre with electronic artists dominating Saturday’s lineup and Sunday dedicated to more straight-forward indie.
The lineup again includes a healthy dose of local bands. Vetiver, Sleepy Sun, Crown City Rockers, the Limousines, Thao Nguyen and Tommy Guerrero will all represent the Bay Area. Tickets are available here.
We were also a little surprised to see Grizzly Bear listed below The Decemberists and Beirut and Passion Pit and Dan Deacon before Brazilian Girls and The Streets.
