It’s been such a crazy summer here in New England. Humid days that turn into thunderstorms and tornado warnings. Families that turn into old memories. Lost cat signs all over the place. Sicknesses of loved ones and deaths of legendary pop icons. Mixtape goodness. And those once in awhile moments where the sun is shining, there’s a cool breeze coming from along the ocean, lounging poolside with an extra spicy bloody mary and set of headphones, escaping on long road trips to new beautiful places, all the while peacefully feeling somehow a little more stronger than ever before…
Which brings us to the official soundtrack and Music Is Art’s Best Albums of Summer 2009. An eclectic collection that combines pop-friendly, r&b, smooth jazz tones to electronic space music and indie rock dreams. Enjoy these samples of the preferred new releases of July and August. Be sure to also see the Best Albums of June 2009. Below if something should be added to the list, please comment or leave a recommendation. Enjoy!

Okay, okay, I know that I said the Daily Graboid would return to it’s original weekly state, but I was out of town all of last week so I’m hoping you can cut me a little slack this one time.
I’ve never been this busy in a very long time, as I’ll be moving for the second time this month starting at the beginning of next week. If you’re curious, I’m going to be moving from Alabama (where I’ve lived my entire life, sadly enough) to Salt Lake City. It’s taken me a while to warm up to the idea, but it’s better than my current situation. So if any readers are from around the area, let me know! Would be great to meet some new people once I get settled in.
Now with that out of the way, we can get to the new album releases from the past week. For two week’s worth of stuff to browse through, there isn’t a whopping amount of “must buys” as far as I’m concerned, but there’s a fair share of quality albums to pique your interest. With new albums/EPs from the likes of Mew, Imogen Heap, Blitzen Trapper, Young Galaxy, Sally Shapiro, The Cave Singers, and The Postmarks. The latter of which completely caught me by surprise as I didn’t even know they were working on a follow-up to their criminally overlooked self-titled debut.
As always, feel free to recommend anything I may have left off.

Arctic Monkeys release their third LP this week, channeling a slightly different sound by working with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme for part of the recording, but fans will find their trademark style intact. Among other new releases this week: Jemina Pearl’s first solo effort since the demise of Be Your Own Pet; Blitzen Trapper’s Black River Killer EP, which makes official the tour CDR they were selling at shows previously; and a long-awaited follow up to And The Glass Handed Kites from Danish band Mew. Hopefully, Aussie band Jet will get a better review for Shaka Rock then they did for Shine On. Songstresses take center stage this week with new albums from Imogen Heap, Dolores O’Riordan, Samara Lubelski, and Sally Shapiro. Matisyahu fans say a “Tov, toda” for his first in three years, and fans of Elliott Brood might want to check out their current tourmates The Wooden Sky. Other worthwhile releases include a new collection from Willie Nelson, more standup from Patton Oswalt, and dizzy electronica from Teengirl Fantasy. BFF Largehearted Boy and listen to the samples below before heading out to your local record shop.

The Crayon Fields - "All the Pleasures of the World"; With all the love we've shown lately to Canadians and Swedes it's about time music from somewhere else started filtering into what we listen to. This time out it's a couple of Aussie's making some fantastic, hushed dreampop for us to devour!Grade: BThe Clientele - "I Wonder Who We Are"; Fans of The Clientele pretty much know what they're gonna get at this point. With each new album the band continues to perfect its downbeat, simple take on indie pop. It's not a bad thing either when tunes sound calm and optimistic like this little jam does, and like a lot of their other tunes do as well.Grade: B-Kurt Vile - "Overnite Religion"; The latest addition to the Matador stable has been super busy since a tremendously successful run at SXSW. Since then the solo musician out of Philly has been recording and touring and building his reputation as a fantastic song smith. His tunes, including this one, are often very hazy with loads of loops built on top of one another to create a really dense bit of sound. We're really looking forward to his Matador debut (his second release overall) which will be out in October. I think you'll be excited after hearing this too.Grade: A-The National - "Ashamed of the Story I Told" (Polaris cover); While everyone is eagerly awaiting word of a follow-up to The Boxer we will have to content ourselves with The National's other output, namely the fantastic tunes they've been contributing to compilations this year. It started with Dark Was the Night and now they are on another comp covering Polaris. Yeah, the same Polaris that did the Pete n' Pete theme song! This tune is pretty fucking great!Grade: B+Earthmen and Strangers - "Bartender"; Dude if Jay Reatard likes you enough to sign you to his label then that should be enough to convince most people to at least give you a chance. We gave Earthmen and Strangers a chance and now we can listen to very little outside of this. Seriously this tune about your favorite person at the bar is fucking hard hitting, non-stop great punk rock.Grade: A-Why? - "This Blackest Purse"; So I was just shuffling through the tunes from this column and I had to look three times before I really believed this tune was from the same people that made Alopecia. Sure enough it is the same people, but the music is completely different. Gone are the hip-hop vibes and experimental recording styles that made Alopecia so great. It has been replaced by a very standard, folk sounding tune. It's catchy but don't we have enough of this already?Grade: C+Os Mutantes - "Teclar"; It has been 35-years since Os Mutantes last released a record. In that time they have influenced countless musicians and music fans with their dynamic tropicalia sounds and gained an audience world wide. Now that they've returned though the pressure is on for them to match the same type of output they did when they last disbanded and if this first tune is any indication they seem up to the task at hand. It's not quite as catchy as some of their more popular tunes, but it is light and breezy and definitely a brilliant tune. We can't wait to hear more of this record and we're pretty sure we're not the only ones sitting on the edge of our seats for it.Grade: BGirls - "Hellhole Ratrace"; It's amazing how different the world of music has become as music blogs have taken over for radio stations as the source for new tunes. Now you can release a 7-minute long single to trumpet the release of your highly anticipated album and people will fall all over themselves for every minute of the song. Sure this is a bit of a mopey tune, but over time you get the feeling that they are coming to terms with the heartbreak much like we do in real life. It helps that it's spread out over so much time and gives us ample to time to experience the interesting take Girls put on their sound here. Just so you know the backlash for Girls should be kicking up around mid-August.Grade: A-Pens - "Networking"; More lo-fi to either love or hate, this time from a trio of girls in the UK that really up the ante on the noise end of things. I've said it before everything in the lo-fi genre needs to be based around a good pop song and this tune has elements of it. That little tune playing underneath the noise keeps this from drifting too far away, but as it is it is a fun tune that really skirts the line of what is unlistenable in this genre.Grade: BMission of Burma - "1, 2, 3, Partyy!"; Mission of Burma kicked off their Pool Party set with this tune last Sunday and it kicked my ass then (I had video of it!) and hearing the recorded version it matches up well with the way it sounded live. Of course it's a little bit peppier then what we're used to from Mission of Burma, but it still flat out rocks as hard as anything they've released.Grade: B+The Dodos - "Fables"; We all adored the last record from The Dodos so much that anything after it would probably be a slight disappointment, and so it is with the first single from their upcoming release. This tune doesn't quite pop like the tunes on Visitor did. It's a good song, it's just not as good as what we heard last time.Grade: B-Track of the Week:Rainbow Bridge - "Big Wave Rider"; There really is no point for a song named "Big Wave Rider" to come out at any time other then the summer. This is meant to be added to a mixtape for a road trip or to be played loudly out of a ghetto blaster on the beach! This is perfect summer music and you all will know it as soon as you listen!Grade: A

Discovery featuring Angel Deradoorian “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”
I want this beat to snap a lot more that it does, but that’s a minor complaint. The synths in “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” gurgle, throb, and sigh just as they should, and even with more digital manipulation than is totally necessary, Angel Deradoorian’s voice has an airy sweetness akin to late-period Mariah Carey. It’s a cute song too, maybe to the point of being slightly off-putting. If you want to be someone’s boyfriend, this is great. If you want someone to want to be your boyfriend, it might be even better. If neither thing pertains to your life at the moment, you may be inclined to think something like “Will you please stop pouring syrup into my ears?!?,” but fuck that.

Teengirl Fantasy “Portofino”
There are a few really nice sounds in this composition, but the one that really gets me is the first keyboard tone you hear. Some of it is the melody of the figure, a lot of it is just the timbre, but it hits this perfect spot in my brain that makes me feel calm, cool, and safe. It’s not exactly soothing, per se — there are other keyboard washes that achieve that effect — but there is a friendly brightness to the sound, and in its tone I recognize something that makes me smile, but I can’t place it. It’s like a pleasant memory I keep forgetting, over and over, forever.

Teengirl Fantasy would like you to think that they are indeed a 13 year old girl with a glittery website on Angelfire, but really they are a couple of dudes from Oberlin College in Ohio. The duo make drone-laden, synth/noise/disco that recalls Harmonia. The track "Portofino" has had me intrigued for months. The collaboration is fitting as the two acts play Market Hotel (Bushwick) tomorrow.Telepathe - Devil's Trident (Teengirl Fantasy Basic Sensation Dub) from Mark Brown on Vimeo.
