Buzz Band Roundup

Band: Phoenix Album: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix Sample: “1901″ Not only is this one of the best dance-y singles we’ve heard in a while, but the French quartet put out an entire album filled with great songs. Get used to it, you’ll be hearing about Phoenix for a while. Bonus: You can download the stems for Phoenix’ “1901″ on their website (wait for splash to load). Mixtapers and remixers go wild. Band: Say Hi Album: Oohs & Aahs Sample: “Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh” “November Was White, December Was Gray” Say Hi is the music project of Eric Ellbogen who writes and records almost all material by himself. Ellbogen’s comfort across different genres — dance-worthy synth-pop songs sharing space with lo-fi indie-rock — make this album special. “Oh oh…” is an out-of-season summer anthem and “November Was White” brings to mind disparate influences like Belle & Sebastian and Spoon. As if we didn’t already like him, the band was originally called Say Hi to Your Mom. Band: Handsome Furs Album: Face Control Sample: “I’m Confused” The boys of Wolf Parade are busy with their side projects. Dan Boeckner is back with a new CD from Handsome Furs, his project with wife, Alexei Perry. Band: Swan Lake Album: Enemy Mine Sample: “Spanish Gold, 2044″ Not to be outdone, fellow Wolf Parader Spencer Krug also has a new release from his “indie-supergroup” Swan Lake, featuring Carey Mercer (of Frog Eyes) and Daniel Bejar/Destroyer (main man behind Destroyer and Hello, Blue Roses, member of New Pornographers). Band: Pree Album: A Chopping Block [EP] Sample: Pree - “In the Parlor” The DC quartet Pree is getting a lot of love for their debut EP, A Chopping Block. “In the Parlor” is as refreshing as it is cute. Clocking in at under two minutes, May Tabol’s warble skips around over an acoustic backdrop and makes you want more as soon as it’s over. The WaPo called them “a cross between Joanna Newsom and Modest Mouse” and that description works for us. Band: Crystal Antlers Album: Tentacles Sample: “Andrew” Crystal Antlers might sound a little throw-back, blending elements of California psychedelia and prog rock together, but make no mistake, they’re moving forward. They’re getting a lot of comparisons to Les Savy Fav, but that doesn’t do either band any favors. Instead, they sound more like a mix between Roky Erickson and Kurt Cobain fronting the Doors, playing songs by Tortoise.

Say Hi

Was White, December Was Grey

"November Was White, December Was Grey" by Say Hi

Say Hi's "November Was White, December Was Grey," is built around a simple sentiment, one which is shared by just about everyone in the Midwest, and anyone living north of the Mason-Dixon line, for that matter, "I'll feel better when the winter is gone." Fittingly, it opens with Eric Elbogen's voice cloaked in reverb, his barren electric guitar, and some pained, longing back up vocals. Make no mistake about it, being secluded in the cold for months is no fun. Gradually, drums kick in, and there's some keys, and as the track builds there's optimism, restrained and slightly shaky, but optimism nonetheless.MP3: Say Hi - November Was White, December Was GreyOohs and Aahs by Say Hi is out now on Barsuk Records.Say HiBarsuk Recordsphoto by Jenny Jimenez

New Releases – 3 March 2009

Here are The Wheel’s Still In Spin’s suggested new releases. The Antlers – Hospice | MP3 | Buy the CD from Insound | Buy the CD directly from the bandDownload “Bear” (mp3)Download “Two” (mp3)Peter Silberman, the main creator behind The Antlers, moved to Manhattan in the winter of 2006 and became a shut-in. This album of dynamic and elusive chamber pop attempts to explain his self-imposed isolation. With a smooth flow, this self-released album swirls with layers of mellifluous effervescence. Boston Spaceships – The Planets Are Blasted | CD Vinyl MP3Download “Big O Gets an Earful” (mp3)This indie rock super group is comprised of Robert Pollard, The Decemberists’ John Moen, and Guided By Voices’ Chris Slusarenko. Pollard has more bands or musical monikers than I can list, but Boston Spaceship is the most consistently reputable band of his current prolific projects. The Planets Are Blasted, the band’s second album in as many years, is a fantastic indie pop record with Pollard’s blend of classic rock and punk substance. Neko Case – Middle Cyclone | CD Vinyl [Import] MP3Download “People Got a Lotta Nerve” (mp3)Case’s powerfully enticing voice is in fantastic form on Middle Cyclone, her first studio album since 2006. This album encompasses themes of nature, which can be oversimplified by the cover song “Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth.” The music, which is performed by her touring band and numerous guests including M. Ward and Garth Hudson, is full of dynamic and enriching layers. Say Hi – Oohs & Aahs | CD VinylDownload “Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh” (mp3) Download “November Was White, December Was Grey” (mp3)For Say Hi’s first Barsuk release, Eric Elbogen creates another catchy indie pop album to add to the previous five releases of the band (dating back to when the band’s name was Say Hi to Your Mom). This album continues the evolution of layered sounds expected from the band while Elbogen’s lyrics remain nerdily kitschy. After the jump, there is a list of more new releases from this week. Other releases from 3 March 2009: Alif Tree – Clockwork | CD Angil & the Hidden Tracks – Oulipo Saliva | CD Antigama – Warning | CD MP3 The Antlers – Hospice | Recommended above Autumn – Altitude | CD MP3 Bell X1 – Blue Light on the Runway | CD Vinyl MP3 The Bitter Tears – Jam Tarts in the Jakehouse | CD Boozoo Bajou – Grains | CD Vinyl MP3 Gui Boratto – Take My Breath Away | CD Vinyl Bosque Brown – Baby | CD Vinyl MP3 Boston Spaceships – The Planets Are Blasted | Recommended above The Boy Least Likely To – The Law of the Playground | CD Clarence Bucaro – ‘Til Spring | CD Buried Inside – Spoils of Failure | CD Vinyl MP3 Neko Case – Middle Cyclone | Recommended above De Rosa – Prevention | CD MP3 The Drones – Havilah | CD Vinyl Justin Townes Earle – Midnight at the Movies | CD Vinyl MP3 Faust – C’est Com…Com…Complique | CD Vinyl MP3 Bela Fleck – Throw Down Your Heart, Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Vol. 3: Africa Sessions | CD MP3 Grandmaster Flash – The Bridge: Concept of a Culture | CD Vinyl MP3 Svarte Greiner – Kappe | CD Vinyl MP3 Harmonic 313 – Machines Exceed Human Intelligence | CD Vinyl MP3 Jesse Harris – Watching the Sky | CD MP3 Anne Heaton – Blazing Red | CD MP3 Holy Rolling Empire – Gigantis | CD House of Heroes – The End is Not the End | CD MP3 The Inevitable Backlash – My Two Brookes | CD Japanese Motors – Perception of Reality [EP] | MP3 Molly Jenson – Maybe Tomorrow | CD MP3 Adam Lipman – From your Mouth to God’s Ears | CD MP3 Malefice – Dawn of Reprisal | CD MP3 Raul Malo – Lucky One | CD MP3 Ian McLagan & The Bump Band – Never Say Never | CD MP3 Buddy & Julie Miller – Written in Chalk | CD Vinyl MP3 Aidan Moffat + the Best Ofs – How to Get to Heaven from Scotland | CD MP3 The Moore Brothers – Aptos | CD MP3 Marissa Nadler – Little Hells | CD Vinyl MP3 Nashville Pussy – From Hell to Texas | CD Vinyl MP3 Of Machines – As Is Everything Was Held in Place | CD Orcustus – Orcustus | CD A Plea for Purging – Depravity | CD Prodigy – Invaders Must Die | CD CD/DVD Vinyl MP3 Prometheus Burning – Plague Called HuMANity | CD Revolting Cocks – Sex-O Olympic-O | CD MP3 Say Hi – Oohs & Aahs | Recommended above Mathias Schaffhauser & Friends – Unequal Equality | CD MP3 Mark Sinnis – A Southern Tale | CD The Soundtrack of Our Lives – Communion [2CD] | CD Vinyl MP3 Angus and Julia Stone – A Book Like This | CD MP3 Tierney Sutton – Desire | CD U2 – No Line on the Horizon | CD Limited Edition CD/Poster/Film Download Limited Edition CD/Magazine/Film Download Limited Edition CD/Poster/Book/DVD Vinyl MP3 Seth Walker – Leap of Faith | CD MP3 Dallas Wayne – I’ll Take the Fifth | CD The Whip – X Marks Destination | CD Wild Light – Adult Nights | CD Marty Willson-Piper – Nightjar | CD MP3 Wretched – The Exodus of Autonomy | CD MP3 Back to The Wheel's Still In Spin Mainpage.

Out This Week 3/3

This week it’s all about the numbers. Former Seattle resident Neko Case returns with her anticipated sixth studio album, Middle Cyclone. Double that and you have the twelfth album from Irish legends U2, who are pimping No Line on the Horizon with a week-long residency on the Late Show with David Letterman this week (for which their first task was shoveling snow). Perhaps not as long lived, but certainly at least as influential, turntable pioneer Grandmaster Flash returns with his first album of new material in 20 years. The first release from Seattle’s own Say Hi (a.k.a. Eric Ellbogen) on local label Barsuk is also his sixth overall. Swedish collective The Soundtrack of Our Lives and British electronica group The Prodigy each return with their fifth albums. The ethereally voiced Marissa Nadler is on her fourth while bi-continental group Extra Golden and new Americana songwriter Justin Townes Earle both on their third. Boston band Wild Light is only on their first, and who knows how many releases this makes for Robert Pollard, whose latest project, Boston Spaceships, is now available. There’s no need to bring a calculator, though, when you head out to your local record shop. Just bring plenty of cash, a list cribbed from Largehearted Boy, and the joyful knowledge that there’s plenty of great music to be had this week. Who knew math could be so fun? Say Hi, has proven difficult to take seriously, despite his knack for writing tightly focused indie-pop gems. He traded under the sophomoric name Say Hi to Your Mom — since shortened — a name that evoked the Ashton Kutcher school of frat boy humor more than it did lo-fi character studies. He put out records about vampires and robots and referenced both Star Trek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I wouldn't have been surprised in the least if he had embraced his Internet meme-loving audience by releasing a record about ninjas and pirates.Since moving to Seattle from Brooklyn, however, Elbogen has matured considerably. The Wishes and the Glitch, his fifth self-released album, featured songs like "Northwestern Girls," a simple yet undeniably catchy love letter to the ladies of the Pacific Northwest. On Oohs & Aahs, Elbogen's forthcoming album for Barsuk (his first on a label), his songwriting has grown even more confident. His voice has shriveled into a resigned sigh, not unlike that of fellow Seattleite David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, Headphones). While he's got a ways to go as a songwriter before he'll be penning narratives as rich as Bazan's, Elbogen seems to have settled into a lyrical persona that suits him well. Unlike Bazan, he's an unabashed romantic, though a hermetic lifestyle has allowed cynicism to creep into his view of the world outside of his window. "November Was White, December Was Grey," perhaps the best track from what is undoubtedly Say Hi's finest record to date, serves as the perfect example of Elbogen's newfound maturity. His voice, double-tracked and wrapped in a thick blanket of echo, feels heavy with the weight of his words. "I'll feel better when the winter's gone," he repeatedly moans over a palm-muted major chord melody. It's the perfect anthem for these last waning days of winter. Just try not to forget that spring is, indeed, just around the corner.~ Mehan Jayasuriya, PopMatters

Monday Morning Mix

Scotland Yard Gospel ChoirLike Barry bringing in his Monday Morning Mix into Championship Vinyl in High Fidelity, I offer you all the following. While it might not offer the same level of debate as to who has the better version of "Little Latin Lupe Lu" (the correct answer is Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels), it should help get the week started. We start with a hefty dose of indie pop to allow the muscles to warm up. Stop and stretch during the quick instrumental interlude courtesy of Dexter Romweber of the Flat Duo Jets - he has a new band with his sister Sara (Snatches of Pink, Let's Active) on drums and a new album due out on Bloodshot Records this spring. Once your muscles are limber and your stretching complete, check out the final four tunes courtesy of the good people at Jade Tree Records. Usually by this point on a Monday morning I'm ready for a little post-hardcore. Enjoy these free and legal mp3's. It was bad, just like anyone would expect. However, there was one redeeming aspect of the movie. At about the one-hour mark, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Harry Potter, Fifth Element, JFK) appeared in the form of a liberal and free-thinking rabbi. I was absolutely pleasantly surprised; in fact, I gave my friend a wee silent cheer. Rarely there is a movie I can disagree with that features Mr. Oldman and his wonderful accent. But as the movie progressed, my mind began to wander. I began to question why Mr. Oldman would take on such a role with the knowledge that the movie would be complete crap; I am, of course, assuming that Oldman is near genius, if not a complete genius. I mean, just look at him and that mustache. With that in mind, I think it's safe to say the Mr. Oldman took on this role merely for monetary gain, which I normally would fault an actually successful actor like Oldman for doing. But now, I'm thinking that his decision was more responsible, dare I say, economical. As you may have noticed, we are in the midst of a large-scale recession. A recession which I believed only influenced the meak, such as myself. It never dawned upon me that this recession could even take a bite out of the careers of popular actors. Well, to put it plainly, while something was happening in the movie that involved some near-dead zombie child, I was blowing my own mind with this economic riddle within a rhyme. The fact of the matter is this: Gary Oldman is in trouble. Gary Oldman needs our help.If I get 100 comments to this blog post, I will start garyoldmanneedsourhelp.com and will begin accepting donations on behalf of the Oldman estate. In case gold old GO reads this, here's a mix to make him feel better.Smooches.

a better fate than a long and lustrous winter

“When Chekhov saw the long winter, he saw a winter bleak and dark and bereft of hope. Yet we know that winter is just another step in the cycle of life. But standing here among the people of Punxsutawney and basking in the warmth of their hearths and hearts, I couldn’t imagine a better fate than a long and lustrous winter.” Phil saw his shadow today; and Groundhog Day is ridiculously one of my all-time favorite movies. I subjected a friend to watching it with me last Thursday — and by watching it I mean trying and failing to restrain myself from quoting most every other line. It gives me unmeasurable joy. This song from new Barsuk Records signee Say Hi also gives me a shimmer of happiness in the dark of winter. Say Hi is Eric Elbogen, who hails from Brooklyn and Seattle, and records his music in a home studio. The new album Oohs & Aahs reminded me of elements of bands like Ra Ra Riot (in the synthesizers that add a frisson of electric energy to an oft-melancholy and gorgeous album) and Apostle of Hustle (in the brooding, creative percussion). His album is out March 3rd, and he’ll be on tour in the coming months with Fuel favorites Telekinesis!. The appropriately wistful refrain in this first single is, “I’ll feel better when the winter’s gone, better when the winter’s gone….” November Was White, December Was Grey - Say Hi (GOSH, you’re an upbeat lady!)

New Say Hi: “November Was White, December Was Grey”

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited about Say Hi (aka Eric Elbogen) new album Oohs & Ahhs. IT comes out on March 3rd on Barsuk and was recorded throughout 2008 in Seattle (where he recently moved to from NYC and then signed to Seattle’s Barsuk). One thing I’ve learned is that Barsuk just doesn’t put out bad music and neither does Say Hi so it should come to no surprise that the first track of the album is pretty sweet. Take a listen: mp3: Say Hi - November Was White, December Was Grey

Say Hi - November Was White, December Was Grey

I first caught Say Hi’s Eric Elbogen opening up for Nada Surf at the El Ray in Los Angeles back in 2005 (or was it 2006?) and after a few songs I was convinced. The dude is pretty good at what he does: electronic/bedroom pop with apparently the right amount of distorted guitar necessary to warm up a crowd of Nada Surf fans. Back then he was playing under the expanded- and much sillier- monicker Say Hi to Your Mom. While the name has changed over the years, the music has stayed pretty consistent. Funny, I actually always thought of him as a much deserving younger brother to David Bazan of Pedro the Lion and now they are both label mates on Seattle’s Barsuk Records (and also consecutive Limb post subjects!). While he has yet to create his “break out” album, Elbogen has a handful of pretty good full lengths under his belt over the past 7 years- I’d say his best so far has been 2005’s Ferocious Mopes (”Girl Number 2!”). Judging solely by the recently leaked track, ‘November Was White, December Was Grey’, his up coming record Oohs and Aahs is more of the “pretty good” and not yet “woah, stop the car!”. Although to his credit, I’m not sure I or anyone knows exactly what a “woah, stop the car!” song sounds like. But if we hear it, we’ll be sure to tell you. Say Hi - November Was White, December Was Grey (pre-order album) No related posts.

Sacramento's Middle Class Rut has a limited-edition 7" single coming out on February 10th. Zack Lopez and Sean Stockham are the only members of the band, but they create enough uncompromising hard rock that it sounds like the work of many more. Think Jane's Addiction meets Rage Against The Machine and you'll get a pretty good idea of their sound.Middle Class Rut • mp3: Busy Bein' Born • Available via Bright Antenna• • • •Diagonals have completed the recording of their first LP, Valley of the Cyclops. The songs, with dancy beats, catchy organ melodies, and haunting guitar riffs, combined with twisted deadpan lyrics, to deftly conjure up the odd mixture of optimism and doom that now rule the streets. Very addictive, I think this band will be heard from frequently in the future. Expected album release date is February 27th, watch the band's website for details.Diagonals • mp3: Clown Fucker <-killer track • Valley of the Cyclops• • • •Toronto's Public has released their debut EP, ...And In The End, Release, digitally on January 20th. Singer Chris Stopa spent several years living in London and New York singing, writing and wandering, eventually returned to Toronto where Public was formed. Chris met guitarist Chas Wilson through a mutual friend, and with the addition of guitarist Eric Newby, bass player Ian McKay and drummer Mike May, Public was created. Their music screams their swagger, and it's a great sound to listen to. Originally released on vinyl last summer, ...And In The End, Release was produced and recorded solely by the band.Public • mp3: Walk Away • Buy ...And In The End, Release• • • •Atlanta rockcandy garageniks The Black Lips are back. After turning the music world on its ear with last year’s triumphantly bratty breakthrough Good Bad Not Evil, the quartet is set to return on February 24th with its third Vice release 200 Million Thousand. Prepare for vintage Lips: a snotty 14-track celebration of unadorned rock-n-roll and no-bullshit songwriting. The Lips have added another run of dates to their already-announced, March-long Myspace Music tour. Kicking off on April 15th in Costa Mesa, CA, the tour winds its way around the desert and up and down the West Coast into early May, and a couple stops in Florida for good measure. We are going to try and catch them at Jack Rabbits in March. The Black Lips • mp3: Starting Over • Watch Vice Records for the release• • • •Say Hi is set to release the brilliant Oohs & Aahs nationally on March 3rd, 2009. Say Hi is Eric Elbogen, who wrote and recorded the LP at his home studio over the course of 2008. He used to live in Brooklyn, NY, but in December of ’06 moved to Seattle. Spin.com recently premiered the first track from the record, “November Was White, December Was Grey,” and had this to say: “Anchored by an icy lead guitar riff and a chorus that longs for winter's end, ‘November Was White, December Was Grey’ is what's playing in Mother Nature's iPod this weekend as she tightens her frigid grip on much of America.” I'm not nearly that eloquent; I'll just say it's a damn fine song.Say Hi... • mp3: November Was White, December Was Grey • Buy Oohs & Aahs from Barsuk Records (available March 3rd)• • • •Operatives A & B began recording for the Reigns organization in 2002. Their first album, We Lowered A Microphone Into The Ground, was a series of recordings made within a seemingly “bottomless” hole found upon the Somerset Downs. Their follow-up, Styne Vallis, was recorded in and around a submerged village that had been evacuated and strategically flooded in 1970 to make way for a new reservoir. The House On The Causeway is their third long player. Surreal, dark, & sublime; it's eccentricity at its gloomy finest.Reigns • mp3: Everything Beyond These Walls Has Been Razed • Avialable March 9th via Monotreme Records

Say Hi releasing Oohs and Aahs [new mp3, SXSW]

I first wrote about Say Hi last year around this time. The shoegaze-ish sound is not normally my cup of tea, but there’s something about this band that continues to draw me in. I say “band” but it’s actually just Eric Elbogen who wrote and recorded the album in his home studio last year. Say Hi’s new album Oohs and Aahs will be released via Barsuk Records on March 3rd. You can also catch him down in Austin at SXSW. It's Hello From...

Say HiGenre: Indie / Alternative / Rock From: Seattle, Washington, United States Barsuk Records’ newest roster addition Say Hi (previously and possibly still known as Say Hi To Your Mom) is set to release the brilliant 'Oohs & Aahs' nationally on March 3rd, 2009. Say Hi is the pseudonym of one Eric Elbogen, who wrote and recorded the LP at his home studio over the course of 2008. He used to live in Brooklyn, NY, but in December of ’06 moved to Barsuk’s hometown of Seattle, where he quickly won the label over. Last week, Spin.com premiered the first track from the record, 'November Was White, December Was Grey', (see below) and had this to say: “Anchored by an icy lead guitar riff and a chorus that longs for winter's end, ‘November Was White, December Was Grey’ is what's playing in Mother Nature's iPod this weekend as she tightens her frigid grip on much of America.” There's not a lot to add to that!Go TryMP3 - Say Hi - November Was White December Was GreyIf anyone from the IFPI is reading these tracks are published with the permission of The Orchard so please refrain from alleging infringement of copyright.Go VisitSay Hi - Myspace // WebsiteLabel - Barsuk Records // Barsuk Records MyspaceGo ViewSay HiSweet Sweet HeartkillerIf you like 'November Was White December Was Grey' then you'll like the following tracks from Say Hi's previous records...MP3 - Say Hi - Angels & DarlasMP3 - Say Hi - Blah Blah BlahMP3 - Say Hi - Zero To LoveIf anyone from the IFPI is reading these tracks are linked direct from Say Hi's website.
