Andy Cabic is the poetic force behind Vetiver, a band named after a fragrant grass that smells the way his music sounds: sweet, bright, and earthy."I didn’t do that on purpose, I just like the smell of Vetiver," Cabic said. He was sitting on a front porch before a recent show at Covington, Kentucky’s Southgate House.Cabic is a soothing presence blessed with a deep plume of energy inside of him, and it's obvious he's not the kind of musician who sees a lot of late nights on tour with too much drink. On this particular evening, he had the tranquility of a man reading a book in the sun on the first warm day of spring. When I told him I’d had a rough weekend he said, "I’m sorry, why?" in a tone implying maybe my grandma had died, or I’d had a bad breakup. A little embarrassed, I explained it wasn’t so bad. I was only trying to make the point that his music would be perfect right now – a restorative and upbeat experience like having a cup of black tea while working through a book of brain teasers, or an ice-cold Arnie Palmer on a hot and sticky day.He said people often describe grounding experiences they’ve had with his music, like the couple from Atlanta who drove to Florida and back with a van full of screaming kids. Tight Knit never left the stereo, and was the only thing that held their sanity together. But Cabic usually doesn’t agree with what is written about his music."The way that Vetiver has been described - I don’t feel like anyone's ever really done it correctly," he said. "A lot of times people use the same archetypes or other artists that would have been mentioned once in a one-sheet or something."It's not that it's negative, he says, but is composed of tired comparisons that seem to be cobbled together in a hurry."I mean, there’s some shred of kinship there sonically, but to say I sound like George Harrison does a disservice to George Harrison,” he said. "I don’t do any of the number of things that people think of when they think of George Harrison. I don’t sing spiritual lyrics, um, I wasn’t a Beatle."And when the write-ups aren't about sonic comparison, they're usually some form of genre-chicanery."And so my music was commonly referred to as the least-freaky-of-the-freak-folk-people," he said. "I always thought what I was doing was accessible and poppy."Vetiver : 3.7.10, Southgate House, Newport, KY : courtesy of CincyGroove.com...<object width="450" height="369"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tyg0QIlEt-g&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e9e00&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tyg0QIlEt-g&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e9e00&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="450" height="369"></embed></object>Indeed Cabic is not a freak, and he says he doesn't make folk music – at least not on his last album. He is a guy with a work ethic using his gifts. At core of Vetiver are his voice and the songs he's so carefully gestated. Sometimes he spends a year tightening the arrangements around the track's "pop sensibility," he said. The tightly woven tracks make for a seamless performance that can feel orchestral if he's playing with a cellist, or downright raucous if he decides to go heavy on electric guitar.Later that evening, at his Southgate House performance, about ninety audience members (in a room that fits hundreds) barely budged except for some heavy toe tapping and head nodding during Vetiver's one, long set. As he played his songs, Cabic’s mouth, shoulders and eyebrows shrank and expanded in unison like he was a conduit for some larger force, like he was expelling a grizzly bear’s soul from his somewhat slight frame.Vetiver : 3.7.10, Southgate House, Newport, KY : courtesy of CincyGroove.com...<object width="450" height="369"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zq9Z8zCINDk&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e9e00&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Zq9Z8zCINDk&color1=0x234900&color2=0x4e9e00&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="450" height="369"></embed></object>His backing band surrounded him with energy and each song had an apex. The sum total was like a well-written story with no errant sentences: each song like a paragraph that drew me in, delivered energy, and then set me down right at the moment I was about to cave in to my urge to get up and dance. It didn’t take any prodding for the relatively small but captive audience to make enough noise to invite them back on stage for a three-song encore, during which at least a few people could be seen awkwardly trying to tug their friends out onto the empty dance floor.MP3 : Vetiver - Strictly RuleMP3 : Vetiver - Everyday--------------------------------------------------------Official Site | MySpace | More MP3s | eMusic | Subscribe To RSS Feed | Follow MOKB on Twitter<script type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/250/addthis_widget.js#pub=xa-4b0d4baf727abd55"></script>

A year after the release of their Sub Pop debut Tight Knit, we caught up with Vetiver right as they were completing a tour with The Clientele.
Led by Andy Cabic, the band is in fine form in this performance which begins with two tracks that were featured only on a limited edition 7″ single released for Record Store Day last Spring.
In the interview, Shiv talks to Cabic about partnering up with Sub Pop, the intricacies of hitting the road when he lives in San Francisco and the rest of the band is around Brooklyn, and his production work on the upcoming album from folk legend Vashti Bunyan.

We’ve mentioned the Ohio Winter Folk Festival a few times in the past couple weeks. With Sub Pop’s Vetiver and Columbus bands like the Black Swans, Super Desserts and Moon High, plus Athens’ Adam Torres (ex-Southeast Engine), it promises to be a pretty great show. Before Saturday’s show at the historic Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, Ohio, there’s also a Music Swap Meet and DIY Art Fair (1 pm).
We’ve got a pair to tickets to give away, too. Send an e-mail to contestdonewaiting@gmail.com with the subject WINTER FOLK FESTIVAL. A winner will be chosen on Friday. You can also buy tickets here ($12 in advance, $15 at the door).

I was doing some long overdue behind the scenes maintenance today when I came across a few uploaded tracks that I hadn’t shared yet.
Words are short today due to the continuation of this godforsaken heatwave and my subsequent lack of brain power. I do apologise.

"These Are My Twisted Words"
Radiohead
Radiohead's twisted words are stunningly wrapped in their twisted sounds. Thom Yorke's vocals float effortlessly over the disorienting, hazy soundscape, creating a painfully beautiful portrait of loss.
-Claire Tiller
"Help I'm Alive"
Metric
"Help I'm Alive" combines Metric's signature catchy pop with Emily Haines's dreamlike vocals and dynamic, carefully-crafted lyrics ("Hard to be soft, tough to be tender"). Canada's premier synth-rock crew don't disappoint in their long-awaited return.
-Jon Kjarsgaard
"Everyday"
Vetiver
Vetiver's used everything that's great about wholesome pop/rock love songs to create this acoustic track about longing for the love you miss. The infectious rhythm and relatable lyrics will have you bouncing along instantly.
-Chad Helminak
"Island, IS"
Volcano Choir
Multiple rhythmic pieces interlock to form a lush mosaic of sound, an intricate bed for Justin Vernon's characteristically ethereal vocals. The end evaporates away, gently bringing the listener back from a beautiful sonic retreat.
-Claire Tiller
"Cornerstone"
Arctic Monkeys
Alex Turner goes looking to replace a lost love in this dreamlike odyssey through bizarre drinking holes, returning with a song as exquisite as it is strange.
-Jon Kjarsgaard
"Pulling on a Line"
Great Lake Swimmers
There's a carefree and pleasant feeling you get from listening to "Pulling on a Line." Led by Tony Dekker's unstrained vocals, the Great Lakes Swimmers project folk sound in a refined but very honest way. You don't have to dig very deep into this Canadian group's repertoire to understand why they have been steadily gaining recognition and a dedicated following around the world.
-Chad Helminak
"Laughing With"
Regina Spektor
Sobering piano chords begin Spektor’s candid reflection on the Almighty, a simple and honest contemplation of humanity’s relationship with God and the guises imposed on Him.
-Claire Tiller
"Little Secrets"
Passion Pit
Right away the electronic keyboard sets the rhythmic tone for this feel-good anthem. Visions of circuses, balloons, pogo sticks, and other random yet enjoyable summer activities flood the mind while nodding to the ever-lasting pop-techno beat. The inclusion of a simple chorus sang by child like vocals adds another element of youthful happiness.
-JoAnn Schinderle
"For You"
Sharon Van Etten
Musically little new ground is tread on "For You," but that is no complaint with a voice that sounds as gorgeous and real as Sharon Van Etten's.
-Jon Kjarsgaard
"The Ruminant Band"
Fruit Bats
If Supertramp and Led Zeppelin wrote a song together, it would probably end up sounding a lot like "The Ruminant Band." The lighthearted, summery '70s sounding folk-pop song is the perfect soundtrack for carefree summer drives with plenty of time and no destination.
-Claire Tiller
"I'm Confused"
Handsome Furs
Hair band-esque guitar riffs wailing over a robotic drum machine beat you'd swear is straight from an '80s casio keyboard might at first make you, well, confused. But as with most things you just don't get, you'll probably feel compelled to try and figure it out. So one listen leads to another, and then another, and then you're not so much confused as convinced.
-Litzy Everson
"Oscar Wilde"
Company of Thieves
The Chicago trio comes off sounding more LA than IL on this sunny alt-rock song. Wilde would be pleased with the bookish lyrics that invoke his wit and wisdom in decrying self-conscious superficiality.
-Claire Tiller
"Panic Switch"
Silversun Pickups
Boasting an almost mischievious flow, "Panic Switch" plays perfectly to the band's strengths. Featuring the pent-up anger of a jilted lover, the song builds slowly until it explodes with a devastating tempo switch and a sublimely catchy chorus.
-Jon Kjarsgaard
"Swing Tree"
Discovery
The electronic hook immediately makes "Swing Tree" feel like part of the soundtrack to a 8-bit video game, but its soothing groove and ever-advancing drum beat helps move this song past any cliche. The thoughtful lyrics are well-placed and perfectly complement the uplifting, floaty feeling you get as you bob your head to the beat.
-Chad Helminak
"Young Adult Friction"
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
Somewhere between Belle & Sebastian and My Bloody Valentine fans lies a wasteland of disaffected musical youth waiting for a certain melancholy message to assure their love for both twee pop and dream pop. "Young Adult Friction" is just such an intimate sort of pop song, but one that makes even the most jaded hipster want to give up PBR and American Apparel for a night in with a loved one. The Pains try very hard to look like they aren't really trying at all and that's the kind of low-key anthem "Young Adult Friction" provides — kind of like a speed-walking victory lap.
-Andy DeLoach

One of my favorite SF-based release from 2009 is Vetiver’s Tight Knit. Listening to this album is as soothing as is a cup of chamomile tea with honey on a rainy day – or like plugging in an air purifier in a smoky hotel room in Texas. Tight Knit is beautifully timeless from start to finish, confident and optimistic, and listening to it evokes a notion that reminds me to enjoy life’s moments, however swift and fleeting. Oh yea, and one of my favorite musical moments of ‘09 was listing to “Everyday” live from the top of the Treasure Island Music Festival ferris wheel. Honestly, beat that!

Day Two started out…awkward. I had chase down a few scalpers to get my girlfriend a ticket but ended up meeting up with someone from craigslist. Our deal got a little odd when the scalpers started harassing us buy saying that the guy selling my tickets shouldn’t be trusted. I politely told him to fuck off, and met up with my girl at the front of the bus line at AT&T Park.
We ended up getting there a bit late, making me miss the amazing Sleepy Sun. I’m sure they kicked if off well though, those guys are fantastic. We walked in on Tommy Guerrero and his band doing their blend of chill out instrumental skate rock. It was a nice start to a chilly day on Treasure Island.
Next was Thao with The Get Down Stay Down at the Main Stage. I didn’t know much about her music; however I loved watching her rock the fuck out. Her brand of indie-pop doesn’t pigeon-hole itself to just catchy tunes and whimsical lyrics, it’s a more brutal form that crosses back and forth from dark to light, much like her performance that day. Very entertaining to watch, I highly recommend catching her live. After a five-year absence, Pavement guitarist and Preston School Of Industry mainman Scott Kannberg returns with Spiral Stairs. While recognizably talented, the music was not anything to rave about. This is not exactly a great side project for those of you waiting for the Pavement reunion.
After a few songs I headed to check out Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. Okay let’s get something straight, if you look at these guys, you’d think they are part of some sort of hippie commune that lives off the earth. You’d probably be right, however, the music and show they put on is joyful celebration of life and the pure happiness music can bring. In fact, the whole band was grinning like kids in a ball pit practically the whole show. Particularly back up vocalist Jade Castrinos, lead vocalist Alex Ebert’s girlfriend. Their chemistry shines on stage and makes for an entertaining show. Oh and the music is pretty good too.
The sleepy folk rock group Vetiver came next. I got very convinced to buy their record that day. Lead songwriter Andy Cabic’s sandy vocals was very fitting sound for the chilly San Francisco afternoon. Afterwards, I made it to the ferris wheel to get a nice view of the city with my girl…a bit cold but very cool to see the festival grounds from up high. After my little ride I watched one of my favorite performances of the day, Grizzly Bear. Still as disarming and brilliant as I remember them, the band played flawlessly to an awestruck crowd lucky enough to witness this very special band.
Next up was Hüsker Dü legend Bob Mould. The man may be showing his age but holy crap can this guy rock out. Despite the small crowd that was forming when he played, the guy still showed enough energy and charisma for me to dust off the old Zen Arcade album. The biggest surprise of the day was Beirut. I was well aware he was an amazing performer and I had heard enough people say “You gotta see Beirut before you die!” to get me enthused enough to check him out. This guy is the real deal. Not only him, but his band and the brass section that tails along. The mix of gypsy folk with Balken waltzes with a more modern feel made for an almost religious experience. Well, I was impressed…the religious experience came from the dozens of girls going apeshit over this guy. I don’t see it, but whatever…better than the Jonas Brothers I guess. After Beirut came chamber rock group, The Walkmen. These guys were a blast to see live. The band’s setlist was mostly off last year’s sonic perfection, You & Me. I’m sure I heard one song off Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone, but don’t quote me on that. Over all, simply fantastic live and would be even better in a venue like The Great American Music Hall.
Next up, The Decemberists. If you were expecting any pre-Hazards of Love, you were extremely disappointed. Granted hearing Hazards of Love in full was a nice thing to observe, I can safely say that any fans of the band were about ready to retire that album and move onto something else. How about some Always The Bridesmaid: A Singles Series songs or shit, even a Crane Wife song would have been nice. I don’t know, I’m just not a huge fan of the new album and kind of wish they’d drop this theater-folk-prog rock they got going on. It’s time to bring back the Decemberists we know and love. Were they bad? Absolutely not. I just think it’s fair to ask for something more from a band with such an amazing catalog. After that, I walked over to Yo La Tengo, who I believe opened with Periodically Double Or Triple from this year’s Popular Songs. It was a decent performance from this critically acclaimed and dare I say, slightly overrated band. After a few songs though I had to rush over to the Main Stage to catch the main reason I was at Treasure Island.
Finally came the main event, The Flaming Lips. Uh yeah, they’re the best. With probably the most outrageous intro I have ever seen, the band members crawled out of a giant digital vagina as Wayne Coyne sat in his deflated balloon, which quickly turned into a giant hamster ball that he famously used to walk across the crowd. The whole set was lined with exploding canons shooting confetti, streamer guns, a megaphone shooting purple smoke, dancing abominable snowmen, and giant balloons that would explode spreading confetti everywhere (I feel bad for whoever had to do clean up). Whilst in the mix of all this chaos the band played plenty off The Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, At War With The Mystics, and their new masterpiece Embryonic. I did notice one amazing thing…everyone in the crowd was simply overjoyed. It was not like a certain section of people, it seemed like everyone was connected and have a great time together. Especially during Do You Realize?? and Race For The Prize. The Flaming Lips solidified themselves as one of the most important, influential, and best live bands of all time. This simple fact makes Treasure Island Music Festival one of the best festivals I have ever attended. I patiently await next year’s line-up, which will have to try pretty damn hard to top one of the most impressive line-ups in festival history.

I’ve been listening all night to the latest album by Vetiver which is a breezy trip through slow down modern American indie folk. I know that sounds like a mouthful of adjectives, but that is really what this album is. Think of Vetiver as an even more chilled out version of Kings of Convenience that sometimes plays with Devendra Banhart. So yes, to answer your question, they are the quintessential band to relax to late at night after watching movies and television with the boys (or ladies).
mp3 : Vetiver - Everyday
Everyday is possibly the most upbeat and catchy track of this album, Tight Knit (amazon) (itunes), which was released in February by Sub Pop. The remainder of the album is filled with songs that make you want to curl up on a hammock somewhere and watch the wind blow through the grass.

When measured against the summer festival juggernauts (i.e., Bonnaroo, Lollapolooza, Outside Lands, Austin City Limits), Pickathon may appear unassuming in comparison. But, as William Shakespeare once said: “Though she be but little, she is fierce” (ol’ Bill said that, right?).
For Pickathon, roots music rules all, and the festival planners have picked some truly excellent acts to represent the time-honored genre. More festival details, lineup, and a whole bunch of MP3s after the jump.
The 2009 Pickathon Festival is set to take place July 31st - August 2nd at Pendarvis Farm in Portland, OR (more accurately, on Mt. Scott about 30 minutes outside of Portland). Three days of music will meet up with your classic summer festival package: six stages, camping, food and craft vendors, beer garden, workshops taught by the performing artists, plus a lovely, rustic setting provided by the state of Oregon.
For fans of rootsy, folksy, fingerpickin’ music, the Pickathon lineup will not disappoint. Our favorites include Blitzen Trapper, Dr. Dog, Vetiver, Alela Diane, the Sadies, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, Horse Feathers, Justin Townes Earle, Elliott Brood, the Deep Dark Woods, Laura Gibson, Joe Pug, and Breathe Owl Breathe, among many others. The full lineup and additional artist info can be found here.
Tickets for the festival are on sale now: $120 for all three days, $190 for a “Complete Pickers Package” (includes full admission, camping, festival T-shirt, plus other goodies), and single days passes ($70/Friday, $80/Saturday, $70/Sunday). Parking is not included in the above ticket prices, and passes need to be purchased separately ($30/weekend, or $15/single day).
Enjoy this sampling of tunes from the 2009 Pickathon lineup:

We told you about the rumors a few months ago, and now we’ve got a confirmed lineup for the 2009 Treasure Island Festival (with most of the rumors turning out to be true).
The two-day festival will be headlined by MGMT and the Flaming Lips. As with the past two years, the folks at Another Planet Entertainment kept the two days largely broken up by genre with electronic artists dominating Saturday’s lineup and Sunday dedicated to more straight-forward indie.
The lineup again includes a healthy dose of local bands. Vetiver, Sleepy Sun, Crown City Rockers, the Limousines, Thao Nguyen and Tommy Guerrero will all represent the Bay Area. Tickets are available here.
We were also a little surprised to see Grizzly Bear listed below The Decemberists and Beirut and Passion Pit and Dan Deacon before Brazilian Girls and The Streets.

New Music Releases – The First Quarter in Review:<script src="http://mediaplayer.yahoo.com/js" type="text/javascript"></script>One thing (of many) that I’m not doing a good job with this year is my weekly record release post. So here’s the second part of my first quarter recap. This is just a top level recap of the releases that rose above the fray.Released on 2/3/09:Ben Kweller: Changing Horses – Kweller goes country; still haven’t heard this.Heartless Bastards: The Mountain – Good (slightly rootsy) old fashioned, female fronted rock ‘n’ roll band. They put on a sold live show, but I haven’t heard the record yet.MP3: The MountainDent May & His Magnficent Ukelele: The Good Feeling of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele – An eccentric singer who lists Prince, Lee Hazlewood and Serge Gainsbourg as a vocal influence. Out on the Animal Collective’s label.MP3: Meet Me In the GardenNico Vega: Nico Vega – Local bands debut for Myspace Records. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – I just saw these guys last night at Spaceland. They’re Brooklyn-ites who play music inspired by very early My Bloody Valentine. Fun stuff. RecommendedMP3: Everything With YouPhosphorescent: To Willie – Probably my favorite release of the first quarter. Lovingly played Willie Nelson covers. Nice listen. RecommendedMP3: A Picture of Our Torn Up PrideZero Boys: History of Zero Boys – One of two reissues from Secretly CanadianZero Boys: Vicious Circle – Reissue from 1982. Midwest punk.MP3: Civilization’s DyingReleased on 2/10/09:Beastie Boys: Paul’s Boutique – This is probably my favorite hip-hop release of all time. It still holds up too. Remastered. Maybe not worth re-buying, but definitely essential.Dan Auerbach: Keep It Hid – The Black Keys frontman steps out with a more acoustic leaning record.Lily Allen: It’s Not Me, It’s You – I bought this for my lady on vinyl, but it didn’t come with a download, so I haven’t listened to it yet.Miranda Lee Richards: Light of X – Local singer-songwriter with ties to the BJM and Dandy Warhols. It’s pretty.Released on 2/17/09:Abe Vigoda: Reviver – Local kids associated with the Smell. I honestly haven’t heard this yet.Alela Diane: To Be Still – Acoustic folk. And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead: The Century of Self – I kind of lost track of them after Source TagsAsobi Seksu: Hush – Dream-pop band fronted by a Japanese womanBeirut: March of the Zapotec – I like Beirut in theory, but it tires me out to listen to them.Death: For the Whole World to See – Death was a mid-1970s black trio out of Detroit who never put out a full-length record. Drag City captures all their singles here. This is on my shopping list still.Eleni Mandell: Artificial Fire – Talented local singer-songwriter.MP3: Artificial FireFol Chen: Part. 1 John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made – This is the eccentric Highland Park band’s first record (on Sufjan Stevens label). I haven’t heard it yet.MP3: The BelieversJason Isbell and the 400 Unit: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit – The former Drive-By Truckers member.M. Ward: Hold Time – Great guitar player. Hopefully She & Him helped him get more recognition.MP3: Never Had No One Like YouMorrissey: Years of Refusal – Every couple of years the critics hail the return of Morrissey. It’s never completely true. There are a few noteworthy songs, but hard to justify purchasing the whole record.Mountains: Choral – If the names Fennesz, Terry Riley and Harmonia don’t mean anything to you, then this probably isn’t for you. It’s actually a pretty approachable instrumental, ambient, electronic record.N.A.S.A.: The Spirit of Apollo – Star studded collaboration between Squeak E. Clean ad DJ Zegon. Kool Keith, Tom Waits, ODB, David Byrne and Chuck D make appearances.Odawas: The Blue Depths – I usually give Jagjaguwar bands a good listen, but I still haven’t gotten around to this one yet.MP3: Harmless Lovers DiscourseThese Are Powers: All Aboard Future – The press release invokes Throbbing Gristle and DNAThrow Me the Statue: Purpleface – Three new songs and a re-worked older song. I loved their debut album.MP3: ShipVarious Artists: Dark Was the Night – A benefit album for the Red Hot Organization. Lots of popular artists from the polite/NPR side of indie rock. Great on paper, but a little dull to go all the way through in one sitting. Probably still enough to justify a purchase.MP3: Knotty Pine (Dirty Projectors & David Byrne)Vetiver: Tight Knit – What I’ve heard from this record sounds good, but I’ve never sat down with a Vetiver record. I need to add it to the shopping list.MP3: EverydayWilliam Elliott Whitmore: Animals in the Dark – He’s got one of the unique Americana voices.Released on 2/24/09:Anavan: Cover Story – Local guys.MP3: TraumatologyBlack Lips: 200 Million Thousand – I liked their last record, but haven’t picked this one up yet.MP3: Starting OverClem Snide: Hungry Bird – Eef Barzelay’s solo record was so well received, we’re finally seeing the release of Clem Snide’s “lost” 6th record. The songs on this one are mostly on the dark, downer side of the spectrum. Fans will dig it.Kool Keith: Tashan Dorssett – One of the funniest rappers around.Le Switch: The Devil Needs a Cough Drop EP – This local band is a favorite. This three song EP was released in conjunction with their Spaceland residency. Right off the bat, “I’m Not On” displays the band’s growing chops as songwriters; it’s one of their all-around strongest tracks to date. “You and I” is a powerfully sad breakup song that sounds like a lost, early 1970’s Leon Russell track. The EP closes with “Sunday Morning” a raw, Tom Waits-inspired track that leaves you with that uncomfortable feeling you get when the dentist blows cold air on an exposed root. Not always pretty, but very strong songwriting. RecommendedVarious Artists: War Child Presents Heroes – Some of your new favorite bands covering some of your old favorite bands.

Amidst seemingly nonstop US and European touring, Vetiver returns to San Francisco in early April for a very special homecoming performance. It was a treat to see the band at the Bay Area Takeover at SXSW and we’re very happy to present the official CD release party for their latest album, Tight Knit, out now on Sub Pop Records. As many critics have noted, the new album is an incredibly moving work, full of memorable layered songs that sound great live. Advance tickets are highly recommended for this one!

About the bands:
Vetiver - “Everyday”
Tight Knit finds Vetiver at the top of their game and we’re excited to celebrate the band’s homecoming performance. “The magic of Tight Knit is that Cabic’s musings on the wandering minstrel’s quandary manage to sound both intimate and universal at the same time…a subtle, intricate album that simply gets better with every listen. A bittersweet pleasure from beginning to end.” (Prefix Mag) “Tight Knit is built with a keen ear for detail, be it a subtle dose of pedal steel or a gently rippling guitar effect, and it features Cabic’s most consistently engaging batch of songs to date.” (Pitchfork) “Rock’s youngest elder statesmen.” (Dusted)
Richard Swift - “Lady Luck”
Acclaimed genre-melding songwriter Richard Swift will have reason to celebrate at the show too, as The Atlantic Ocean–his fourth album–comes out on Secretly Canadian on April 7th. “The Atlantic Ocean [is] one of the most consistently satisfying releases of the year. 9.0/10″ (Obscure Sound) “His peppy keyboard pop, combining melodies that Elton John would envy with a gently sardonic voice that oozes regret, is tailor-made for mass consumption; yet he’s so smart that you never regret loving every note.” (Spin) “Four stars.” (The Austin Chronicle)
Adam Stephens and his band open the show with some of their layered, heartfelt folk-rock. The one Gallant’s solo project is generating a lot of well-deserved buzz and he’s joined by a very tight band of talented musicians. “[S]ounding like an electrified Dylan - or his label head Conor Oberst - with a new full-blown band…Nice.” (SF Bay Guardian) “[E]xtremely soulful.” (Spin)

Vetiver, the coolest band on earth, strikes again with a fourth album called Tight Knit. Nothing fancy, just a bunch of pretty good songs for our pleasure. Andy Cabic makes me think of Jerry Garcia from The Grateful Dead, I mean his voice, listen to Strictly Rule, for example, and let me know.Web: vetiverse.comMySpace: myspace.com/vetiverseVetiver - Everyday .mp3

It's that time of year where internet publishing platforms great and small get overstuffed with #sxsw tags. Yay? It's an odd climate for a festival devoted to artist discovery and its collateral debauchery. The internet and its various status-alerting mechanisms have subsumed much of the fest's function, or at least that's what I read on Twitter. But this year is special because we've got the meltdown of our entire financial system added to the mix. They say there will be less money flowing through Austin this year: less promo material, less bands getting signed, less free booze. At SXSW '09, S.W.A.G. = Sorry, We Ain't Got any. But you know, the state of the economy finally catching up with the music industry's years-long free fall is comforting to the indie rock ego; we've always been early adopters. And just maybe this recalibration of what it means to be at SXSW -- each year a little less about finding a "new" band to brag about, this year a little less about frivolously blowing your savings in an absent minded party -- will help the festival become what it should be in 2009: simply, a great place to see a ton of independent bands. And Kanye West. Of course, the list of official showcases (and day parties) is overwhelming per usual. So whether you're in Austin or are just looking for a roadmap to your SXSW 2009 torrent, check here each morning for a pared down version of the day's slate to help focus your energies. As you scan this first installment, you might notice that we forgot to mention our party. Well, it's gonna be huge! Huge in 2010. Mark your calendar. On to Wednesday's music: Continue reading SXSW Starts Here: Wednesday's Sets To See ...

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Richards, is “Everyday” by Vetiver from their 2009 release Tight Knit on Sub Pop.
Vetiver - Everyday (MP3)
Last year, Andy Cabic, the frontman behind the warm folk of Vetiver, released Things of the Past, an album of covers that reveled in his influences as it spun out a series of nearly anachronistic folk songs, soft and slow, even rustic in tone. Thus, one comes to expect that Cabic’s newest album, Tight Knit, will continue along a similar folk path, but in the creation of original composition, Cabic manages to smoothly transition from paying homage to his inspirations to incorporating them in to his own original sound. “Everyday” is reminiscent of Cabic’s earlier work but there’s a splash of sunlight, the hint of a wicker chair and an empty beachside view on display, a touch of happiness less prevalent in his earlier works. To some degree, “Everyday” seems almost poppier than the work that has come before, as if the softer, more somber songs of Things of the Past helped Cabic expunge some of his darker tones, leaving a similarly if not more so cozy, friendly ambiance.
Currently, Vetiver is heading down to Austin for SXSW, but from there they hit the road, touring across the Southwest, up to the Northwest, with a stop at the newly remodeled Crocodile Cafe on April 18, and across the rest of North America. Head over to their MySpace page to find out where they’ll be. For now, here’s Vetiver’s video for the Song of the Day:

One of our new favorites in Sub Pop’s Vetiver has a new album out called Tight Knit and they’ve just put up a cute video for the lead single “Everyday.” It’s in the karaoke style and follows a hapless fellow on rollerblades. It might make you laugh. It might make you cry. But there is a happy ending… or is there? Watch, then download the song below.

If you like it, buy the record from Sub Pop.
Vetiver will be in Seattle playing their new tunes at the new Crocodile, Saturday April 18 with Richard Swift.

The first single from Vetiver's Sub Pop debut is a straightforward and breezy little jangle-pop ditty, coming from a crew which has gotta have a sense of humor (of people who can tolerate Devendra, I assume it must be so), so I'm glad to see it get a video this playful. The story about a hardluck loser in love plays out in the style of a karaoke video, so the scenes of happiness and sad times are particularly goofy and exaggerated. Dude laments the loss of his girl, chucks a camera on the beach in depression (this is the most effective way to register depression), finds a hottie in a red jeep and a love for the GIN BLOSSOMS so you know it is on, until she drugs our Romeo, steals his money, and absconds with the Gin Blossoms vinyl because even grifters feel Gin Blossoms are underrated (real talk). He ends up homeless because, you know, the economy and Geithner and things of that nature. Continue reading New Vetiver Video - "Everyday"...

As you might have noticed, I fell a little behind with the “Drake’s Takes”, and that’s why you’re seeing the reviews from the mammoth week of Feb 17 just now. For me, eventhough this week was impressively deep, I was knocked out by Dark Was The Night from the moment I heard it and very impressed by Alela Diane’s To Be Still as well as Beirut’s March of the Zapotec, (Realpeople: Holland, not so much). -ed.
Drake’s Take: New Releases 02.17.09
It’s another big release week highlighted by new releases from M. Ward, Morrissey, Alela Diane, Robyn Hitchcock, Sam Roberts, Beirut (which I highlighted a couple weeks ago,) Jason Isbell, Asobi Seksu, Vetiver and Tommy Keene. There’s also the Red Hot Compilation album Dark Was the Night, curated by The National’s Bryce and Aaron Dessner, which would have merited an entire post unto itself, had I not run out of time.

M. Ward - Hold Time
Stream / Purchase [mp3]
Portland’s Matt Ward is a busy man these days, what with all the producing, guesting and side projects (She & Him with Zooey Deschanel). So it’s no wonder that he wants to Hold Time, as I imagine it’s quite a commodity for the in-demand musician. Ward’s timeless production is on full display here, and it’s what put him on the top of more than a few artists list as producer they’d like to work with. As a result, Ward has a lot more friends now, which is why this album comes off as more a M. Ward and Friends album than a normal stellar Ward release. Deschenal sings on a couple songs (more Him than She,) Lucinda Williams lends her pipes to another, and Granddaddy’s Jason Lytle brings his ELO fascination Ward’s production (“To Save Me” — and the results would make Jeff Lynne proud). I like the album, but it falls a little short of the bar Ward set with his last two releases.

Sam Roberts - Love at the End of the World
Stream / Purchase [mp3]
Everybody has a band or artist they love that sometimes defies explanation, and Sam Roberts is like that for me. I first found myself in his clutches after he put out the Inhuman EP, and have been following him since. His third proper release takes a step back from the concept-y Chemical City and returns a bit to the first album, We Were Born in a Flame, relying more on singles than a whole album’s connecivity. Aside from the fun “Them Kids,” there’s nothing here as catchy the singles from WWBIAF, but that doesn’t matter to me, since everything he records seems to bypass my critical ear. I think it may be a live thing, as Roberts turns it up on notch on stage. Catch him on his current tour, you won’t regret it.

Alela Diane - To Be Still
Stream / Purchase [mp3]
Alela Diane comes across as a sort of female version of Nick Drake, or dare I say it, a young Joni Mitchell. With that comes the good and the bad, the good being the benefits from such favorable comparisons, the bad being the feeling that you’ve heard it before. But the self-produced release is more than up to the comparisons, just listen to “White Diamonds” once, and it’s hard to deny the talent. It’s a release that promises great things to come for the folk chanteuse.

It's fitting then that their fourth full-length is titled Tight Knit — at this point in their career the band's rich, polished craft sounds almost familial in its closeness. If Tight Knit, the band's first album for Sub Pop, is a departure, it's an unconventional one. While Vetiver has been ceaselessly touring and recording over the past couple of years, this is their first record of original tunes in three years. After their stunning sophomore release To Find Me Gone, Andy Cabic and Co. focused their attention on honoring material from a host of their heroes. The resulting Thing of the Past album and More of the Past EP was evidence that the band are the rare sort that succeed equally at writing and reinterpretation. However, Cabic's impressive record collection has done more than provide fodder for well-chosen covers. His deep knowledge of folk and classic rock, and appreciation for many of the genre's masters, has provided the schooling for his continued growth as a songwriter. As such, Tight Knit is more refinement than reinvention, continuing where To Find Me Gone left off. As with the earlier record, the songs here alternate between gentle California folk and easy livin' rock 'n' roll."Rolling Sea" is a stretched, slow-burning epic, gentle and wave-lulled; a fine soundtrack to sitting topside in the sun watching sails flap. "Sister" is similarly tender, a pop song slowed to the pace of a babbling brook. "At Forest Edge" closes the record with a wrap of misty psychedelic folk complete with tripped-out call-and-response vocals. When the band shakes off the napping-in-the-shade vibe, they bring some of their most overtly pop-oriented material. Fellow Sub Popper Eric Johnson, of the Fruit Bats, joins in on the album and his laconic melodies clearly influence the swaying "Everyday." "More of This" boogies with punctuated shots of guitar and a rolling bass solo breakdown. "Another Reason to Go" drudges up some serious muck for a swampy, Southern funk, punctuated by horn bleats and a loping, thick-waisted bassline. On the surface, Tight Knit may sound like more of the same for Vetiver, and thankfully so. While the band reaches a bit further than previously, they are careful not to stretch too far, focusing instead on the continued refinement of their position as rock's youngest elder statesmen.~ Ethan Covey, Dusted Magazine

First, make these, which are seriously the best biscuits ever in the whole history of the universe. No, I’m not exaggerating.
Hyacinth’s Everything Cookies Biscuits
1 1/2 cups butter
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 cups brown sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 1/4 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/3 cups quick oats
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups granola
1 1/2 cups chopped pecans
1 1/2 cups raisins
1 1/2 cups apricots
Cream butter and sugars. Add egg and vanilla. Next add flour, baking soda, and salt. Add in oatmeal and granola. Fold in pecans and other ingredients. With cookie scoop or two spoons, drop onto cookie sheet and bake at 180C (375F) for 10 minutes. Eat.
——————————————————————————–
I made about 4 dozen using this recipe, but I like my biscuits all fat and chunky so you could definitely get more outta them if you weren’t greedy like me and used your mixture in a more frugal manner. You could also halve it if you felt that 4 dozen was going a little overboard. Which you won’t once you’ve made them.
Source: The Pioneer Woman You can find a heap more recipes here, along with detailed instructions and gorgeous photos of the cooking process as well.
Then check out A Free Man’s yumbo gumbo recipe, along with explanations in the comment section of what biscuits and gravy and grits and hush puppies are, for those of us not familiar with the deep south. And if you’re like me you won’t be able to read the words ‘deep south’ without being compelled to say them several times out loud in the manner of Forrest Gump.
While you’re cooking/reading/obnoxiously imitating the accents of others, have a listen to these:

As a listener, and a fan, I buy into the world of Vetiver, or at least what I imagine the world of Vetiver to be - what I want it to be. It’s a place filled with dusty vinyl, vintage amps, seasoned sweaters, stone-built Bay area fireplaces and a little bit of mystery. [...]

Vetiver's new Sup Pop album, Tight Knit, is currently streaming in its entirety at AOL. I definitely recommend a listen.
Currently in Europe, the California folk band known for beards and hanging out with Devendra Banhart is kicking off a North American tour in Philly on March 10th. They'll play the Sub Pop showcase at SXSW in Austin on March 19th (unlike the Thermals who will play the Kill Rock Stars showcase), and they'll keep going with only short breaks until they hit Pittsfield MA on May 17th. Tour partners include Sian Alice Group, Larkin Grimm, Richard Swift and Papercuts. They're playing with the latter on May 3rd at Bowery Ballroom (on sale Friday at noon), and on May 7th at the Bell House in Brooklyn (on sale soon).
The Papercuts track for download above is from their/his new album You Can Have What You Want, out April 14th on Gnomonsong. Gnomonsong is the record label formed by Devendra Banhart and Andy Cabic of Vetiver.

Here are The Wheel’s Still In Spin’s suggested new releases for this week.
The Deep Dark Woods – Winter Hours | CDDownload “All the Money I Had Is Gone” (mp3)This quartet of Canadian folk musicians has crafted an amiable album. The songs take influences from bluegrass and country while borrowing from the folk rock bands of the ‘70s. Winter Hours has a sound that is both timeless and up-to-date.
Fake Problems – It’s Great to Be Alive | CD Vinyl MP3This four-piece band has released an eclectic album. These songs are quick punk-influenced indie rock. But the band’s sound is across the board with horns, distorted guitars, and gravelly vocals. If you can imagine a mixture of Two Gallants, Gogol Bordello, and Modest Mouse then you’re beginning to get close to the sound this band creates.Below is the video for their anthem-style single, “The Dream Team.”
Psapp – The Camel’s Back | CD MP3Download “The Monster Song” (mp3)Psapp is the musical project of Carim Clasmann and Galia Durant. The duo constructs songs that have been described as indie pop and experimental electronica. On The Camel’s Back the music is beautifully placid and the melodies are intrinsically appealing.
Vetiver – Tight Knit | CD Vinyl MP3Download “Everyday” (mp3)Vetiver gained praise for their 2008 cover album Thing of the Past (including an honorable mention in TWSIS’s best of 2008). Tight Knit, the band’s fourth full-length album and first one for Sub Pop, shows the band evolve their alt country sound with layers and nooks of aural goodness.
M. Ward – Hold Time | CD Vinyl MP3Download “Never Had Nobody Like You” (mp3)After five solo albums and his She & Him project with Zooey Deschanel, M. Ward has issued Hold Time. Ward has the extraordinary ability to build and improve his sound with each release while keeping the retro quality and recognizability of his folk-rock intact. Hold Time is another successful step in the progression of M. Ward’s career.

New WaxAfter a year in which Andy Cabic and company released two EP's devoted to paying homage to relatively obscure early 70's Americana, Vetiver is back with a new full-length entitled Tight Knit, which marks their debut for Sub Pop Records. It seems that Cabic's delving into others' material made an impact on his own songwriting process. While the band's previous material already had a vintage sheen, Tight Knit most closely resembles a dusty record-bin treasure or some lost AM transmission finding its way through a hazy layer of static. The album's opening track "Rolling Sea," serves as a fitting precursor to the rest of the album. It's a breezy, mid-tempo country-tinged track that harkens back to a simpler, more laid-back musical atmosphere. Tight Knit seems almost effortless in its unhurried charm, but the band leaves no detail spared and every musical decision seems measured in its inclusion. The album provides the kind of shimmering acoustic fare fitting for a calming, top-down drive up the coast. -- Capt. ObviousListen:MP3: Vetiver - EverydayTags: Vetiver, Tight Knit, Review

Artists these days are just being irresponsible. Isn’t this the time we should be saving our money? But here they are putting out one great album after another. Just look at the new releases this week from Largehearted Boy’s list — how can you really deny yourself the latest from M. Ward, Morrissey, Beirut, Asobi Seksu, Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3, Jason Isbell, Vetiver, Eleni Mandell, Odawas, Faunts, Iran, Aidan Moffat (of Arab Strap), Steve Kilbey (of The Church) and William Elliott Whitmore? That’s not to mention newcomers like Mi Ami and Fol Chen. But if you should have any regrets about spending your savings, you can always temper that guilt by throwing down for the new Red Hot compilation Dark Was the Night and help support the their effort to raise awareness around HIV and AIDS. If altruism or guilt abatement isn’t enough to motivate you, check out DJ El Toro’s preview in his column about this comp that features over 30 songs from artists like Grizzly Bear, Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, My Morning Jacket, and too many others to list. So don’t be as irresponsible as all the bands and artists who have released albums this week — get out there and support good causes… like our economy!

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead The Century of Self...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - "Isis Unveiled"from Austin Town Hall..."In a way, they’ve crafted the perfect LP. Side one is full of a barrage of shear noise and pace. Side two is a slow drive down a carefully soundscaped highway. Either side surely can stand up on their own, both with lots of quality, but when thrown together, its a bit of an odd combination."Abe Vigoda ReviverAbe Vigoda - "Don't Lie"from Sun on the Sand..."While No Age seems content to bury its melodies beneath tides of gauzy guitar, Abe Vigoda has showcased a more vulnerable sound on Reviver—confident to bare both passion and debt to musical influences."Alela Diane To Be StillAlela Diane - "White As Diamonds"from Pampelmoose..."Where her previous album, ‘The Pirate’s Gospel,’ had a rich and dark gothic feel to it, ‘To Be Still’ has careful country overtones that remind me of Neil Young’s ‘Harvest.’ And Diane’s voice as always is a miracle - pure, lilting cadences that deliver clear lines of yearning never leaving the listener feeling low; as with gospel music all doubts are aimed upward to a higher being and the results are uplifting and spiritual."Asobi Seksu HushAsobi Seksu - "Familiar Life"from The Tripwire..."As the album’s title predicts, that sex appeal is far more subdued here, and the album as a whole seems less grounded. Still, Hush’s pleasant surprises tend to outweigh its disconnects, and they’re well worth listening closely for."Beirut March of the ZapotecBeirut - "My Night with the Prostitute from Marseille"from Pop Matters..."Don’t dismiss March of the Zapotec / Holland as an in-between-albums triviality. Beirut’s EP especially is an important step forward for the group, and throughout, Zach Condon’s songwriting only gets more convincing."Broken Spindles Kiss/KickBroken Spindles - "Introvert"from Viva Indie Rock..."What I really like about this album is it features really personal, interesting songwriting that utilizes the new wave undertones to highlight the poignant mood rather than the overly bombastic electronic music for which The Faint is so well known."Faunts Feel. Love. Thinking. Of.Faunts - "Feel. Love. Thinking. Of."from Welikeit.indie..."At once symphonic and sprawling; ambient, yet driving, Feel.Love.Thinking.Of. is the culmination of a year of touring, recording, and meticulous exploration of the band’s transcendent imagination."Fol Chen Part 1: John Shade, Your Fortune's MadeFol Chen - "Cable TV"from Pasta Primavera..."Fol Chen is an LA band that wraps it’s claws around sounds like Prince, Hot Chip, Pink Floyd, Gwen Stefani, Pere Ubu, Danielson Famile, Scritti Politti, Boards Of Canada, The Blow, and Pulp. I know. A bit all over the place ain’t it? "Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Jason Isbell and the 400 UnitJason Isbell and the 400 Unit - "Seven-Mile Island"from The Hurst Review..."That every song is a gem should be a given; Isbell has long been a vital songwriter, and here he’s writing with as much confidence and vision as ever, sounding, perhaps for the first time, like he’s relishing his role as a lone frontman."M. Ward Hold TimeM. Ward - "Never Had Nobody Like You"from 75 or Less..."This is the sound of a once-great songwriter on autopilot. There are a couple thrills here ("Stars of Leo" being one), but anybody else could've made this record by plugging variables into the M. Ward Machine"Mi Ami WatersportsMi Ami - "New Guitar"from The 405..."At times Watersports does become quite repeptitive but to be honest Mi Ami make the sort of music that can only truly be appreciated in a live environment, so take my rating with a pinch of salt and then go see them when they come to your town."Morrissey Years of RefusalMorrissey - "Something Is Squeezing My Skull"from Pitchfork..."Last time we saw Morrissey, on a rather slapdash Greatest Hits compilation, he was singing a song called "All You Need Is Me" and promising "You'll miss me when I'm gone." Neither proposition seemed watertight: His 2000s return to action had been welcome but rarely spectacular, and the man looked set on a twilit career of gently diminishing returns. So Years of Refusal comes as a gratifying shock: It's his most vital, entertaining, and savage record since 1994's Vauxhall and I. "Mountains ChoralMountains - "Choral"from Consequence of Sound..."Choral is akin to that seashell you find on Emerald Isle when you visit the ocean your first time. While the single shell does not encompass the entire shoreline’s beauty, you keep it as a memento or a reminder that there are truly places this awe-inspiring right at the fingertips of your memory."N.A.S.A. Spirit of ApolloN.A.S.A. (feat. Kanye West, Lykke Li, & Santogold) - "Gifted"from Female First..."In spite of the range of performers, the pairings seem organic, inspired and make perfect sense on the first listen, never coming off as ironic or impulsive. That passion and appreciation for music is the driving force behind The Spirit of Apollo"Odawas The Blue DepthsOdawas - "Harmless Lovers Discourse"from Captain Obvious..."Luckily, the complex union of Eno meets Neil Young is what makes Odawas so damn intriguing. The Blue Depths is sometimes entrancing, sometimes hazy, but consistent in its mystifying beautiful. Lick the toad."These Are Powers All Aboard FutureThese Are Powers - "Life of Birds"from Spill..."Nevertheless, "All Aboard Future" is an exciting offer for listeners who didn't chose Fleet Foxes or Vampire Weekend on their top ten list for 2008. Both accessible and progressive--These are Powers are one of those bands that challenge what we means when talking about "indie music"."Throw Me the Statue PurplefaceThrow Me the Statue - "Ship"from I Pick My Nose..."If the rest of their forthcoming EP is like “Ship”, it’s something to look forward to. Starting with synth drums one almost thinks it’ll be an upbeat synthy tune, but when the melancholy piano and vocals come in, it’s obvious this won’t be an upbeat effort."Vetiver Tight KnitVetiver - "Everyday"from Dusted Magazine..."On the surface, Tight Knit may sound like more of the same for Vetiver, and thankfully so. While the band reaches a bit further than previously, they are careful not to stretch too far, focusing instead on the continued refinement of their position as rock’s youngest elder statesmen."<script type="text/javascript">

Most talk about Heatless Bastards begins with lead singer Erika Wennerstrom and her dynamic voice. Others have likened it to a mix of PJ Harvey and Robert Plant, showing just how powerful her voice can be. And it's true, for the majority of The Mountain her voice dominates the soundscape and when you start listening to how powerful the guitar riffs are and how loud the rhythm section can be you truly begin to realize just how awesome that feat is. Her voice warbles and trill its way through most of these bluesy rock songs, the perfect fit for hard rock that is pounding and insatiable at every turn. But make no mistake about, Heartless Bastards is a full band at a very high level throughout The Mountain coaxing every bit of power from everyone on the record. This is a pretty awe inspiring record that fits neatly next to some heavy rock Goliaths.Heartless Bastards - "Out At Sea"Heartless Bastards - "Had To Go"After finally breaking out with the release of his third album, Pride, Matthew Houck has gone and released an album of covers to follow it up. The path of Phosphorescent may not be the path that I'd have chosen, but the album of Willie Nelson covers makes sense for a number of reasons. Most importantly, countless people have compared Houck's voice with the dry delivery Nelson has been famed for for ages. On To Willie, Houck ratchets up the slow, dry delivery and definitely finds a nice little niche in covering some of Nelson's songs. He wisely avoids attempting to re-create these tunes in his own image, instead he does the Nelson originals justice with some nicely laid out tracks which musically are fairly solid. The voice is the key here though and Houck does an admirable job all the way through. There are a few standouts, namely the album's first tune "Reasons to Quit" and 'Permanently Lonely", which are instant classics in the world of covers. For a cover album this is a pretty well imagined, planned, and executed record, I'm just more excited to hear something new and original from Houck. Hopefully that will come soon.Phosphorescent - "Reasons to Quit"Phosphorescent - "Permanently Lonely"Over the course of the first two Vetiver records Andy Cabic set the groundwork for the style that this musical project will run over. It is different from his more popular work with Devendra Banhart, eschewing the freak part of folk altogether and focusing on the finger picking, sunny lyrics of straight ahead folk. On his third record under the Vetiver moniker, Cabic has finally allowed other elements into play allowing a bit more pop to enter the fray and throwing some light synths here and there to give the album a more layered feel then anything he's done in the past. It's these things that give Tight Knit a chance to make its way into your everyday life, adding elements of hooks and style without which it would be a pretty boring record overall. It still follows most of the folk coda though, most of the songs are very hushed and gently played, and you would be forgiven if you drifted off to sleepy land while listening. There are moments, like the lead single "Everyday" and the horns found on "Another Reason To Go" where things pick up a bit, but those moments are fleeting. Tight Knit is a steady sounding record, with some truly excellent musicianship, but it never rises to a level that grabs you and takes you deeper into the music and that's where it suffers.Vetiver - "Everyday"Vetiver - "More Of This"<script type="text/javascript">

Tight Knit is Vetiver’s fourth album, but it’s their first appearance in my music collection. San Francisco singer-songwriter Andy Cabic is the soul of the band that plays gently strummed, breezy acoustic songs perfect for a beach day along the Bay. While the slower tracks like “Rolling Sea” and “Through The Front Door” are the perfect soundtrack for afternoon naps, Vetiver shines in their uptempo sunny pop gems like “Everyday,” “More Of This” and “Another Reason To Go.” The album is subtle, but if you’re patient, you’ll find really good stuff in the nooks and crannies.
Tight Knit is due out February 27th via Sub Pop Records.

You may remember our mention that Vetiver has a new disc on the way, and that we were more than a little psyched about it. Well, now we have the (not entirely unexpected) news that the bay area locals will be playing a show in our fair city - and it's the CD release show to boot! The show will be at Great American on April 8th, with Adam Stephens of Two Gallants opening. Given that it's the CD release, we're guessing that not only will it be a raucus affair, but that it'll sell out as well. Tickets are on sale now, so get em while they're hot!mp3: Vetiver - Everyday

I’ll add Vetiver’s Tight Knit to my short list of favorites for the year thus far. I supremely enjoyed Thing of the Past and it’s follow-up More of the Past. If you’re familiar with their San Francisco sound you’ll need little convincing in picking up the album next week via Sub Pop.
If this is your first listen, think of them as a dreamier version of the Fleet Foxes. A band that took good musical notes on their supporting tour of the Black Crowes and earned a hat-tip from Gary Louris as a result. If you’ve got a well-worn copy of Neil Young’s Harvest in your collection, this could be it’s counterpart in this era.
Great as Tight Knit sounds now, where the winter meets the spring, I can’t wait till it soundtracks those lazy summer mornings and late night bonfires. Grab a listen to the track “Everyday” as a free and legal download below.

Tight Knit is het vierde album van Vetiver, een bandje rond Andy Cabic uit San Francisco. Het verschijnt 17 februari bij, voor het eerst, Sub Pop. Ideale muziek voor een lazy Sunday morning. This month’s mixtape is Part Two of our “Best of the Bay Area” mix that we started last month (find Part One here).
We had set out to make a single mix that encapsulated the local scene, but there’s just too much depth of talent in San Francisco to reduce down to an 80-minute primer. While last month’s mix featured the best of the local indie-rock and indie-pop scene, this month’s installment focuses mostly on slower, more folk-influenced choices.
This batch features several mainstays of the San Francisco scene — including Mark Kozelek (here with his Sun Kil Moon project), Vetiver, American Music Club, John Vanderslice and Rogue Wave — as well as many of our favorite more recent additions to the scene (Birds & Batteries‘ “I’ll Never Sleep Again” has been on near-constant repeat here).
As we mentioned last month, we stuck to current acts that still self-identify with the Bay Area — artists that might be sitting next to you on the MUNI any given day. Green Day, Journey and the Counting Crows might have been “local bands” back in the day, but none of them are playing Cafe du Nord or the Bottom of the Hill anytime soon.

Bishop Allen played a hell of a show in Tucson last July, and now the Brooklyn band has new record on the way. I have no doubt it'll be more of the ultra-catchy guitar pop that they're known for.
The band's preview singles fall right in line with the Bishop Allen catalog, which includes the 2006 monthly EP project.
Grrr... is out March 10, the same day the band launches a six-week tour. And

These last few weeks I’ve been steadily enjoying the new song from the forthcoming Vetiver release Tight Knit (due Feb 17th, their debut album with Sub Pop).
“Everyday” is a warmly jangling folk tune with an electric midsummer current of joy running smack dab through it. One writer said that Vetiver’s music “unfolds like a road trip down Highway 1, towards songwriter Andy Cabic’s home in San Francisco.” I’m goofy-eyed in love with this little song — it’s moving in right next door to Blitzen Trapper’s “Furr.”
So, side story: this weekend I was also somehow convinced to go shopping for a new shade of lipstick with my sister, one of my own personal levels of hell — not only shopping, but comparing all those colors, the plum rose vs the honey plum rose, and what have you. So, we ended up at Aveda, where we were misted and dabbed with various things that smelled good by the salesladies upon entering the premises. The scent I chose contained vetiver, and I never knew vetiver was a plant.
And now, paradoxically, I think I like this Vetiver song even more.
Everyday - Vetiver
You can currently hear their warm and lovely music live throughout Europe in February, then all over the US in March.

It’s high time we start our SXSW 2009 coverage. We’ve quietly been updating our SXSW 2009 band list page and, in case you weren’t reading last year, most of our coverage focuses on day parties that don’t require a badge and serve free beer (because that’s where we’ll be).
Sub Pop tipped us off about their SXSW 2009 lineup for Thursday March 19th, but the location hasn’t been specified.

1. "Sex on Fire" (live) - Kings of LeonNothing like a live version of my favorite song from 2008 being performed for an enthusiastic crowd that knows all the words. Available at Anyone's Guess (along with some other great Kings of Leon live tracks.2. "People Got a Lotta Nerve" - Neko CaseFor every blog post about this song, $5 is being donated to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. A great song and a worthy cause.3. "Blood Bank" - Bon IverI kind of missed out on the whole Bon Iver thing in 2008, but I really like what I've heard from the Blood Bank EP, out today. Download the title track at RCRDLBL.4. Everyday - VetiverSub Pop - aka the New York Yankees of record labels - have added more offense to their roster in the form of San Francisco freak folkies Vetiver. Their Sub Pop debut - Tight Knit is out February 17.5. "Can You Tell" - Ra Ra RiotListening to my brother's radio show this past weekend, I heard this song for the first time and it really stuck out to me. Download it over at Music Under Fire's Top 20 Songs of 2008.6. "Nothing To Worry About" - Peter Bjorn and JohnPeter Bjorn and John drop a new track and who gets to premiere it - why, Kanye West of course. I really dig PB&J and this song is pretty dope, though I agree with Music Ramen who says, "The intro/chorus of kids singing sounds SO similar to Justice’s 'D.A.N.C.E.'" Download it at Kanye's blog.7. "Shove It" (remix) - Santogold featuring Three 6 Mafia and Project PatSantogold dropped a hot record in 2008, and is riding right on into 2009. You can hear here with Jay-Z on "Brooklyn Go Hard" from Notorious and on this remix, which you can download at Notes From a Different Kitchen.8. "Red Magic" - The Game featuring Lil WayneI've been listening to the Game's L.A.X. a little bit, and I was kind of bummed this song was not on the album. The only place I've been able to find this song is on the unauthorized Lil Wayne mixtape, Da Drought is Over 6, which you can download at Get Right Music.9. "Mykonos" - Fleet FoxesProof that indie music is moving further into mainstream culture - Fleet Foxes were on Saturday Night Live performing "Mykonos" from the Sun Giant EP. Download the original at Stranger Dance.10. "Circus" (Diplo Remix) - Britney SpearsJust saw this, and I haven't heard it but I imagine it's got to be hot. Download it at our friends We Like It Indie.

Abe Vigoda - Don’t Lie
Abe Vigoda’s 2008 release, Skeleton, wasn’t something we talked about here at Stranger Dance. Our fault completely. Even though “Don’t Lie” is on this year’s Reviver EP (due out 2/19), its driving, metallic guitars have just enough reverb on them to force me into some 2008 regret.
Here We Go Magic - Tunnelvision
And Brooklyn won’t stop. It is getting annoying, but if that’s where the music is, that’s where it is. Here We Go Magic is actually Luke Temple’s new project and it has the makings of airy awesomeness. Little hints of Animal Collective’s repetitive mind control definitely make it worth the listen. Seriously, be prepared for some actual tunnelvision to occur.
Vetiver - Everyday
If I’m gonna talk about Brooklyn, you know I’m gonna bring the San Francisco. Vetiver’s new album, Tight Knit, is due out February 17th and based on this first listen of “Everyday,” it’s quite suitable to the warm weather streak we’ve been having. Don’t you think?
Peter Bjorn and John - Nothing to Worry About
Perhaps that whole crazy instrumental thing was just a way to prepare audiences for Peter Bjorn and John’s upcoming Living Thing on March 31. Apparently the guys have a little more behind them than the whistling pop of “Young Folks” - namely, some hip hop beats. “Nothing to Worry About” kinda reminds me of “Amsterdam,” but I guess I’m trying to find some connection to Writer’s Block.

Vetiver - Miles ApartVetiver - Everyday

It seems like there’s so much to share/mention and just so little time to get everything to you. So, I’m going to one Greatest Hits post that will hopefully drop some serious coolness on you.
I’ve never been to CES, but after reading the review from The Ice Cream Man, I’d like to go next year. I also had no idea there was a Pinball Hall of Fame.
Neko Case drops her new album, Middle Cyclone later this year. In preparation, and for the goodwill of animals everywhere, she and her label are offering the song, “People Got A Lot Of Nerve” as a free and legal download.
Handsome Furs also have a new record coming out this year on Sub Pop. Check out a taste of what’s in store when Face Control drops on February 3rd.
MP3: Handsome Furs - “I’m Confused”
Sticking with Sub Pop, the newest addition to the Sub Pop family is MoB Approved, Vetiver. Look for their new record, Tight Knit to land February 27th, with an advance listen below.

The reason I loved Damien Rice records was because of the gorgeous vocal contributions of one Lisa Hannigan. She’s releasing what I can confidently say is a stunning record called Sea Sew, that will be released February 3 via ATO Records.
Ryan Adams poured his heart out in a blog post today that reveals his intentions to remove himself for music at the conclusion of the scheduled tour dates.
Bonnie “Prince” Billy will play Turner Hall Ballroom in Milwaukee on Wednesday, March 18th. Tickets are $18 and his new record, Beware drops on March 17th. Cover art + details here.
I’m on Twitter. If you like more frequent updates, that’s the place to find me/them and you should follow me. Also, if you like baseball, I’ve been posting a Past Baseball Player of the Day for a little over a week now.
New Year Re-Discovery: Paul Cebar - Check him out. One of the true and unappreciated gems in all of music. I own The Get-Go and Upstroke For The Downfolk, you’d be completely satisfied with either purchase. More soon/later on Paul.

Tight Knit is the fourth full-length album from Vetiver--singer/songwriter Andy Cabic's ever-evolving musical home base. Luminous and surprising, Tight Knit unfolds like a road trip down Highway 1, towards Cabic's home in San Francisco. It represents a summation of the different styles and directions heard on past Vetiver releases, while it introduces some unexpected twists.
"I think I was able to make the most of the different moods of each song," Andy confirms. "Several of the songs have been staples of Vetiver's live show for some time in much the same form as they appear on this recording. Other songs were given a last polishing in the studio. And a few songs were radically reworked from the way they were performed on the road."
"There are songs here that allude to elements of everything I've done so far, and songs that have something which heretofore I maybe only hinted at.">Tight Knit will be released by Sub Pop on February 17th. Track #3 is available to downloads above. As far as upcoming shows, Vetiver have been confirmed as one of the many people playing SXSW in Austin this year. (Music: March 18-22). The latest and greatest (officially confirmed) full artist list is below...

I found myself coming to terms with feelings that were developing for a girl I shouldn’t have feelings for recently. I laid it all out on the table and got a response many told me I’d be receiving long before I even got to know her. The realization that I may have just had the last conversation I’ll ever have with her isn’t sitting right with me at the moment.
What does any of that psychobabble have to do with the forthcoming release from San Francisco’s Vetiver? It just reassures me that regardless how disappointed I am with the outcome of my endeavors, there will always be another great album coming down the pipe to brush myself off with after I pick myself up.
Tight Knit is the fourth full-length from the band and will hit store shelves on February 17. The album was recorded at The Hangar in Sacramento and at Melva in LA. Longtime band collaborator Thom Monahan handled the task of producing the effort. Tight Knit features Andy Cabic (lead vocals and guitars), Kevin Barker (guitars.), Sanders Trippe (guitar and vocals), Otto Hauser (drums), and Brent Dunn (bass).
The listening experience is as pleasant as you’d expect from a Sub Pop release. Its dreaminess creates a euphoric sensation at times…elevating me from the weight that keeps me grounded. While the sample I’ve been cleared to share doesn’t capture what I was explaining previously, I think you’ll find your mood changing for the better after listening. Here’s what Cabric had to share about the finished product:
“I think I was able to make the most of the different moods of each song,” Andy confirms. “Several of the songs have been staples of Vetiver’s live show for some time in much the same form as they appear on this recording. Other songs were given a last polishing in the studio. And a few songs were radically reworked from the way they were performed on the road.”
“There are songs here that allude to elements of everything I’ve done so far, and songs that have something which heretofore I maybe only hinted at.”
Care to check out Tight Knit? Sub Pop is offering an “instant stream” of the album when you pre-order a copy.

We already mentioned Vetiver's migration to Sub Pop, and we have to say, we've been really looking forward to hearing some new material from the band. Last year's covers record was just fine, but the things these guys do on their own is, well, we really really like it. Thankfully, details of the band's latest, Tight Knit, are starting to trickle out, and it's looking all good. First, there's the cover art (see above). Second, there's a pre-order from Sub Pop that offers up a complete stream of the record. And third, Stereogum has just put forth a preview mp3 from the record entitled "Everyday".Listening to the track, we have to say, we're more than a little stoked to have Vetiver back delivering their own tunes. The song's lilting forward motion is integral to the band's classic sound, and the mellow vibe should make for a perfect springtime soundtrack. Stoked.mp3: Vetiver - Everyday

It's no coincidence that Sub Pop finally made a promo MP3 available from Vetiver's upcoming Tight Knit the day after the whole thing leaks to the world. Sometimes you can play the market, but sometimes the market plays you. I haven't heard a thing from/about Tight Knit, but my interest is piqued after hearing this song:[MP3] Vetiver - EverydayThere's probably nothing to this song that you didn't glean from a the end of any number of romantic comedies or any given Buddy Holly song (take your pick), but what it lacks in originality and inventiveness it compensates with a deliciously catchy, simple melody that hasn't left my head since I first heard the song thirty minutes ago. A year ago if you had asked me to describe Vetiver, "adult contemporary folk" would've been the furthest thing from my mind. But if you can then take all negative associative qualities away from such a label, you might have Vetiver's new album in a nutshell.Tight Knit is out on February 17th.<-- Vetiver -->Official Site | MySpace | More MP3s | Preorder Tight Knit on vinyl for just $12

Just before Halloween we premiered Vetiver's cover of A.R. Kane's "Miles Apart" from More Of The Past. Well, here's to the future: Next month Andy Cabic & Co. are releasing Tight Knit, their first album for Sub Pop (and fourth full-length overall). For now you can take a listen to the sunny lead track "Everyday." It's decidedly more straightforward than that danceable "You May Be Blue (Neighbors Remix)." We also have the album art, which is bluer than you might imagine after listening to "Everyday."
