After we got the breezy, West Coast indie-folk flavored “In My Time” last year, Matador has released another teaser mp3 from Kurt Vile’s upcoming Smoke Ring For My Halo. After the sharp sonic contrasts that marked Vile’s last full length, 2009’s excellent Childish Prodigy, I thought the next new Vile track to surface would either find him rocking out behind a wall of guitar noise or stripping things down to a back to basics lo-fi folk song – try to show another side to the man’s talent. Instead “Jesus Fever” surprises because of its similar melodic and sonic structure to “In My Time” – it’s practically a dead ringer actually. And that’s fine – Vile proves quite adept at this kind of laid back, chiming sound that would have fit right in on AM radio in the early 70’s. And by the way, that’s the updated album art up there. Neil Young anyone? <o:p></o:p>MP3 :: Jesus Fever<o:p></o:p>(from Smoke Ring For My Halo. Jason Quever has a way with shadows. It’s like everything he does is partially submerged in darkness. His press photos are often out of focus. In his songs, his voice drifts — occasionally hides — within the psychedelic dream pop’s downcast haze. That feel continues on his Papercuts’s fourth album Fading Parade via its nighttime blend of strings, autoharp, Mellotron, Moogs, 12-string acoustic guitars, piano, echoplexes, etc. Take a listen to the soaring whisper of first single “Do What You Will.” Sub Pop get a couple points for describing the sound as “Belle & Sebastian teaming up with Slowdive and recording with Phil Spector,” though this never feels so twee. DOWNLOAD: Middle Brother - Me Me Me (MP3) Jonny Corndawg at a 2010 BV-CMJ Day Party (more by Chris Gersbeck) Jonny Corndawg will kick off a Brooklyn residency at Union Pool tonight (1/4). Fellow Deer Tick collaborators Liz Isenberg and Bed Pigs open the show. Bed Pigs = Deer Tick's ex-guitar player Andy T (the guitar player before Ian from Titus Andronicus took over). Corndawg will also play the venue on the next two Tuesdays, bringing Pepi Ginsberg & Alana Amram on for support on 1/11, and Buffalo Stance & The Extraordinaires (who used to be Jonny's backing band) for Jan 18th. Each show will cost you $8 at the door (and free blue Mountain Dew to the first 10 paying customers in the door). Jonny Corndawg celebrated the new year by posting a new track to his Bancdcamp page. The song "Down on The Bikini Line" is streaming below, but you can get a downloadable copy for the price of an email address. Jonny Corndawg can also be found on the debut album by Middle Brother. You might remember them as MG&V..."Middle Brother to release debut album in March. Partisan Records is excited to announce that Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick, and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit have joined forces to make a very special record. The self-titled debut, recorded in January 2010 in Nashville, will be released on March 1, 2011. Middle Brother played their first show at 2010's SXSW - a tiny, late-night, unannounced event under the moniker "MG&V." Other than recording the album and rehearsing once, they had never played the songs live. The audience (and the mob of onlookers crammed in the doorways and windows) was treated to an impossible-to-forget set by a band of musical comrades who seemed genuinely surprised by the fire that was ignited on stage. It was a rollicking and boisterous show that could have fallen apart at any moment and instead centrifuged into melodic and harmonic brilliance. What held it together was each member's sense of song and performance - a perfect, intuitive balance of craft and feel, equal parts playful and earnest."Jonny Corndawg also played with MG&V aka Middle Brother at that SXSW show, or to be more specific, he performed "Middle Brother" with the band. It's a song he helped write which now shares a name with both the full album and the band. It's track #4 on the new album and you'll need to wait a while to hear it, but track #8, "Me Me Me", can be downloaded now for free above. Pre-order the album at Partisan. Check out the full tracklist below. Middle Brother played their first show as "Middle Brother" on December 20th at The Troubadour in Hollywood. It was a holiday benefit with Cass McCombs, Mountain Man and Deer Tick also on the bill. They have no upcoming shows scheduled, but some will surely appear as the album release date gets closer. Besides the Brooklyn shows, Corndawg will also hit York, PA before heading out to the West Coast for a string of dates. John and Ian from Deer Tick kick off their own solo tour later this month. Corndawg's full tour schedule, song stream and stuff, below... Millionyoung is one part rock ‘n roll, one part super synth, and a whole bunch parts of a dance party. The musical creations of Floridian Mike Diaz, his upcoming LP Replicants releases digitally this Tuesday and we’re stoked to premiere the title track. The cover art for the album is a lovely luau lady shaking it somewhere between Maui and the Milky Way, a spot-on visual representation for the sounds Millionyoung create. Tunes with plenty of blissful electro pop perfect for smooth beaches, yet enough amped up riffs to keep fiery volcanic enthusiasts at bay. [MP3] Millionyoung – Replicants A short, smooth jammer to get you through Hump Day and add to the intrigue of Millionyoung’s full length releasing via Old Flame Records. There are many things making this song enjoyable, like a driving beat and well-placed handclaps, but the melodic shift at the 1:33 where Diaz exclaims “I’m never gonna find another love like this again” catapults the track into a different era of dance-floor bangers where odd hand gestures and frizzy hair were the norm. To top it all off, the Tyrell Corporation could make this track their theme song since it pays homage to the timeless Blade Runner. Tweet This! Share this on Facebook Post on Google Buzz Buzz up! Badlands is the debut full-length from “trans-Pacific nomad”/crooner Alex Zhang Hungtai, aka Dirty Beaches. Tweet We’ve heard these songs a thousand times before, but that’s just part of their charm. Almost any band can contribute something new to these classics, and will perhaps create your new favorite version along the way. The Shants, Westwood & Willow, Ash Reiter, BLAMMOS, and A B & the Sea (featuring the SHE’s) have done their part this Christmas season, covering the likes of “Please Come Home for Christmas,” “Frosty the Snowman,” and more (the BLAMMOS tune is an original, however). The Shants also have a video version of their cover on their website, while Westwood & Willow have an entire EP of Christmas songs (including some original songs) available for purchase. And let’s not forget Sea of Bees’ recent cover of “Feliz Navidad.” Enjoy, and Merry Christmas: The Shants – “Please Come Home for Christmas” Westwood & Willow – “Frosty the Snowman” Ash Reiter – “Blue Christmas” BLAMMOS – “It’s Christmas Everywhere (except in my heart)” A B & The Sea ft.
